General Discussion / Re: Profits, Performance, Trust & Efficiency

I like your idea but think there should 100% be a small but meaningful reward for successfully doing the job whose payment should be delayed by a decent period of time, say a week or a month that would allow any betrayal of trust to involve much of the vested time going unpaid.

It would encourage those who want to scam the network to just do it immediately because they're not going to be paid for most of the good work performed once the betrayal is discovered.

In other words, fail fast.

True decentralization isn't necessary for everything, the important part is to prevent to monopoly of what is "correct".  So whether you do a random lottery or whatever, it should be attractive to the average user because lacking the average user you'll have only specialists and bad guys populating your trusted oracle system, and those aren't good odds.

So is the new ETA TBD?

I agree, a balance needs to be struck between decentralization, security, usability, utility and adoption, with a lowest common denominator approach.

Regarding this "trustee" role/function how does this really increase the risk of scrutiny from regulators? This game or experiment and its exchange j of virtual tokens will not change fundamentally, or am missing something?

The political bickering between bitcoin core devs and counterparty/mastercoin will only serve to highlight the scalability issues that Daniel Larimer has been stressing all along.

I think it is more important that Dan has 45 min in NYC to himself without having to share the stage with anyone.

All Bitshares. Looking forward to it.

you will make far more money when your Bitshares are worth much more than the $100 you are trying to hawk them for right now to unsuspecting newbies.

If we just sit around and hold our bitshares, waiting them to rise in value when no actual value is being added to the system, add to that the constant dilution of *shares by newer and newer DACs, plus the actual dividends being earned from trading fees, then you can expect a very short life for this project.. (imo)

I don't really appreciate the term "hawk them for". It's a real straw man.

This thread is about removing an ad that is a potential conflict of interest and confusing at a minimum, not about the fundamentals of investment ideology.

General Discussion / Re: Contingency Planning?
« on: March 25, 2014, 04:12:28 am »
I'm not a really a techie type, but have recently been reading a good amount about bitshares. From what I've read, bitUSD is intended to track USD closely. If it does that, then I believe bitshares X and the entire bitshares movement could be a huge success.

But what if, after launch of Bitshares X, bitUSD decouples from the USD? Granted, if people believe that the focal point in this "prediction market" is that bitUSD will track the USD closely, then perhaps it will. But there are plenty of cases in the financial world where things that should track an underlying asset don't. Just look at closed-end mutual funds, or Royal Dutch-Shell, or any one of a number of examples of anomalous stock price behavior.

Will bitUSD track well? That is the $64 billion question, I guess, and the outcome of the Bitshares XT experiment will have implications for most or all future bitshares DACs. If tracking does not occur, would that be the end of Bitshares X? Does 3I have a contingency plan in case Bitshares X doesn't succeed?

Why do you think BitUSD needs to have 100% parity with USD in order for Bitshares X to succeed?

Additionally, change the background image. Bitshares is not about 2 young people collaborating or doing something together.

At one glimpse, the user should understand that Bitshares is about finance, profits, prosperity for everyone etc. maybe use some of the big finance metropolis as a background image. But the current one is definitely not the image we want to express.
I am biased here as well  +5%

I agree. The stock images should go. I do like the "live" Vegas image though. Perhaps one similar to that with some network imagery for the main image.
Yeah I also assumed it was just a temporary stock image

Please don't use a Vegas image either.  That also sends the wrong message.

OK, but the event is in Vegas, so it sort of relevant  ;)

Beyond that, I was more referring to the style of the image with motion.

Would the MAS have relationships with the medical industry to transact the payments of claims? Or would the MAS simply pay the shareholder the relevant amount and not deal with any third parities?

"Like penny stocks, they start out so cheap they
simply have to go up!"  Actually they can go to zero.

" But it is the most complex,..." "But what really matters.." Never start a sentence with "but".

There are arguments to and for the use of contractions in business, I would eliminate all contractions where possible as I believe it cheapens otherwise very good writing.

But, Stan you are quoting a soliloquy of a monolog, I do not think that the reference provides a satisfactory precedent to save your BUT.

But, but, but what if I just can't help it?    :)

"But that the dread of something after death,
The undiscovered country from whose bourn
No traveler returns, puzzles the will
And makes us rather bear those ills we have
Than fly to others that we know not of?"

Admittedly that example is 500 years old, taken out of context and originally intended as poetic stage dialog but...
I learned it in 12th grade English Literature class, so it has to be right!

Hey, I just saw this thread.
Look, we never said on the site that we're affiliated with Invictus. Reading the "about us" section should cover that.
When customers emailed us asking questions about Keyhotee, the new wallet, the snapshot, even technical questions like "how do I install..." I answered each one of these emails with a clear "We are not Invictus. Invictus is www.invictus.io", but still I explained and answered all their questions because I have great respect for Invictus' work, and want to see it succeed.

A few weeks ago, when Protoshares were twice what they are now, the team and I held a giveaway thread on bitcointalk where we gave 100 protoshares to 2000 users, and told them all about this forum.

Recently we've seen an up trend in visits to our website, and following the links it seemed like there was some real confusion as to the legitimacy of the site.
I published a disclaimer in English and Chinese (thanks ripplexiaoshan) that says outright that we have no relation to Invictus.

Me and the team are not out to scam anyone. That is the complete opposite of what we've ever done for the community.
I don't post a lot on the forum, but you can talk to me almost every day on irc, or at my keyhotee (founder).

Please re-think this.
arubi

This confused me when I first saw it and I think it is extremely misleading. I believe you "BuyBitshares.com" people are honest, as I have not heard otherwise, and I respect that you have taken the time to defend yourselves here and on Reddit. But having Dan's video on your main site, using the same logo, and the fact that practically every element of your site screams out that it is real Bitshares and Invictus (when in fact it is not) would cause you to lose this trademark dispute in any court of law in the United States. If the Invictus folks were not as nice as they are, you would find yourselves put out of business by an army of lawyers.

At a time when it is critical to all of us that Bitshares develop a good reputation and enable fuller understanding of its capabilities, you are enriching yourselves by clearly pirating the name, reputation, and goodwill that Invictus and this community have worked to develop. Please take down your site and help us work to promote Bitshares; you will make far more money when your Bitshares are worth much more than the $100 you are trying to hawk them for right now to unsuspecting newbies.

General Discussion / Re: Our new website is now LIVE!

From reddit. I think for us here it is very clear and nice but here are a view for a reddit guy. I think he has a few good points there :
"The website makes absolutely no sense to me. I haven't a clue what Bitshares is.
According to the video, it gets rid of desks, rent, utilities, salaries and equipment and pays all of the money saved to shareholders. And it allows you to transfer shares for free but only for digital companies which exist entirely in software (which don't yet exist).
The best explanation of what bitshares is is hidden on the FAQ page:
BitShares is a free open source software platform that can be used to launch Distributed Autonomous Companies (DAC).
Ok, so where is this open source platform? Or is BitShares a company, it seems to be employing people.
So your website claims BitShares is an open source platform, things you can trade like shares, a digital autonomous company and also a regular company? I'm confused.
Overall opinion: lots of words that mean very little and claim to make lots of money. Is it a scam: no, they aren't asking for my money. Is it an advertisment: no, it's open source. I have literally no idea what the point of this website is other than a design exercise for The Creative momentum"

We need a better presence on Reddit with more informed participants answering questions and addressing concerns. I think this is absolutely imperative actually.
