General Discussion / Re: Adam B Levine's Top Crypto Sites
« on: January 27, 2014, 08:36:08 pm »
Ambitious title, to be honest with you I get most of my information by talking to people all the time, and reading lots of forums.   I am paying attention to Bitshares, Mastercoin, NXT, Ethereum, Emunie (to a lesser extent).   I am very interested in open transactions.

Adam, any that are off the radar or on the horizon?

Q1 is about Metacoins, Q3 will be about the coins built on top of metacoins, and I wouldnt be suprised if it was really Q2.

Honestly this is the bleeding edge right here

What do you mean by Q and what by metacoins?
Q1 is about Metacoins, Q3 will be about the coins built on top of metacoins, and I wouldnt be suprised if it was really Q2.

By tools do you mean financial instruments that are possible with Bitshares/Mastercoin or 3rd Parties building on top /based on Mastercoin/Bitshares?

Q1 being from January 2014 to March 2014
Q2 being from April 2014 to June 2014
Q3 being from July 2014 to September 2014
Q4 being from October 2014 to December 2014

Metacoins being something like Mastercoin and then the coins/tools built on top of these metacoins.

BitShares AGS / Re: Repost: Announcing AGS & BitShares Allocation

They keep them.
See OP:
Quote
"What happens to all the donations?"

100% of the proceeds go to growing the crypto-equity industry. Zero percent  will be retained as profits Invictus.
That means these BTSX, together with Donated PTS/BTC, will be allocated in an asset pool that 3i promises to grow DAC industry, but not as company profit. Am I intepreting correct?

Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Correct. That is what the OP said. But maybe an I3 staff member can confirm that...

re: msc: I invested some but I'm not too sure about it. They haven't delivered much and there doesn't seem to be much direction to the project. It got too much hype IMO

What I'm interested in and what I think the OP is asking is: what kinds of news aggregation / opinion sites / blogs do you guys follow for news in crypto-*** space?

msc: that was the the layer on top of bitcoin fashion, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_qdr_Z3hrqQ

coindesk is a good source for context and opinion outside the btc community.
Letstalkbitcoin is an in depth source. Thanks Adam!
Bitcoin Magazine is also very good, good at explaining abstract things easily.
Than conference panels.
Other than that bitshares and btc forums.

Did anyone invest in Mastercoin and if why?
I didnt because: Less promising than Bitshares + way more expenseive / higher market cap...

General Discussion / Marketing / Education ideas
« on: January 26, 2014, 05:07:59 pm »
Marketing is about mainstream perception. So the forum and its ideas might be a good source for ideas to that can help influencing mainstream perception.

We should have a central thread that collects ideas that are non technical (marketing essentially, something else?). Ideas should be specific enough for I3 / Brain to make use of them if he thinks it makes sense and gives good return on time and money at a given moment. Things like "do things quicker please" or suggestions for priority setting are things of little practical help. But specific/practical ideas for what everyone here would react positive to in advertisement / education can be efficiently generated by the community.

So here is my first idea:

Suggest to write an article on coindesk that addresses the problem which this coindesk article talks about http://www.forbes.com/sites/timworstall/2013/12/09/testing-shillers-nobel-prize-against-the-bitcoin-bubble/
Essentially the article says that  bubbles are more likely to form if there is no way to go short on an asset/currency. And there is no way to go short on BTC atm without being payed out in something else than BTC.

Edit: The same need for hedging was addressed here http://www.totalwebcasting.com/view/?id=nysdf  Panel 3 Day 2- The Academic View on Virtual Currencies at 76:45 (by some critic of bitcoin, close to the FED)

General Discussion / BTS can help prevent BTC bubbles
« on: January 26, 2014, 04:36:56 pm »
... and make BTC less volatile. Here is an article about it: http://www.forbes.com/sites/timworstall/2013/12/09/testing-shillers-nobel-prize-against-the-bitcoin-bubble/

Essentially the article says that  bubbles are more likely to form if there is no way to go short on the asset/currency. And there is no way to go short on BTC ATM without being payed out in something else than BTC.

So someone could go long BitUSD and short BitBtc. Then the drop in Bitshares that would go along with a big (fundamental) drop of the BTC price would be compensated.

BitShares AGS / Re: The real difference between AGS and PTS
« on: January 25, 2014, 05:57:06 pm »
As a PTS holder I am seriously peeved at the raw deal I3 gave us.

Can you explain?  I thought PTS was more valuable now because rather than receiving 10% of the DAC the PTS shares now receive 50%.. is that inaccurate?

AGS kind of ended up pegging PTS value. People are now selling PTS for AGS.

That just makes sense to a certain extend though. Because holding PTS gives you BTS plus you can keep your PTS.... Think that was an exception today because someone put in a lot at once which is about half of the PTS donated...

General Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Miami Updates
« on: January 25, 2014, 11:52:18 am »
Also referring to fuznuts post here https://bitsharestalk.org/index.php?topic=2554.0;topicseen
It would be great to have Invictus branded as THE DAC company, the pioneers. This branding would just follow the reality. Invictus was the first group that put the emphasis on the wider use of DACs apart form the (Bitcoin) currency.

With respect to the video on facebook: I like it! Dan has great ambitions. Although, especially when a wider public should take on the DAC ideas, we/dan/I3 shouldn't come accross as some fanatics. the video had notions of this ;)
I mean we arent. In many respects the concepts just make sense. But people are afraid of too big changes, especially when they can not imagine what the future will look like... Humans biggest need is to make sense of reality / order it. Considering governments are an important building block, there is a lot of fear associated (with the general public) if you take it away (rhetorically).

Any chances to get a live audio/video stream? Or at least a source that has some video/audio of panels and interviews ready this weekend?
Adam maybe?

BitShares AGS / Re: The real difference between AGS and PTS

Agree with regard to invictus and bytemaster! Good distribution is key to success in DACs and this is only possible if the team focuses on the long term and not the quick bug which in the end is way more profitable anyway (exponential growth...).

Edit:
And with respect to AGS/PTS value something has to be considered that has not been mentioned yet that much. With PTS you are holding a tradable asset that can rise in value in itself which is not the case for AGS. Maybe (what do you think?) bitshares has more potential to grow in price compared to PTS but by buying AGS one is giving up an asset with value in itself. With PTS you have both Bitshares and PTS. With AGS you only have Bitshares after the release... The only way people can get in with future invictus DACS is by PTS which will make it rise lots....
What do you think?

You will get a portion in all future I3 or I3 supported DACs through AGS. As far as I3 is concerned, AGS and PTS are on the same footing.

...you are not contradicting what I said above

I read closely and yes, you are right.

So it all boils down to how big BitsharesX is going to become. If you believe that its gonna be huge it makes sense to maximize the earned amount. I am some 2:1 in PTS/AGS and will probably end up as 1:1.

Do you mean 1:1 with respect to your profits from AGS vs. PTS?
