I made (compiled it). Thanks!
Now how do I start the client (webwallet? desktop wallet?)?
System: Ubuntu 14.04

Go to the programs/client/ directory and you should see a binary called bitshares_client or something similar. To make your life easier once you find it type sudo mv bitshares_client /usr/bin/. so it'll be in the path.

Then:
screen bitshares_client to run it.  (sudo apt-get install screen if you don't have it)

Type cntrl-a cntrl-d to put the screen in the background (still running) and screen -r to "resume" your screen session.

Once you're at the Wallet prompt you'll need to create a wallet with wallet_create <name> and then create an account within it.

Once you're all setup type wallet_export to save it out to a .json.  For safety I also quit the client and then went to ~/.BitSharesx/wallets and tar'd the named wallet directory and put it somewhere safe (different machine(s) ).

*In toast we trust*.
It's not just blind trust .. you can see that as long as bter.com does not enable widthdrawal .. the exchanges stake does simply not vote .. and its a bigger stake than AngelShares afaik

The majority of my BTSX is on bter waiting for the ability to withdraw.  I'm sure my stake isn't that large compared to others on there.  It's early days yet.

I can't seem to find a download link to the Windows binary.  Anyone have it?

Thanks.

Wow, this was sorted out quickly!  All mentioned delegates have been pushed out.  Thank you to whoever was paying attention and had the ability to take action.

If only windows users were able to access the system. Seeing as microsoft is the most widely used OS, I'm sure once windows user can access bitshares x this will clear up. Till then, enjoy.

My primary wallet is running just fine on Windows 8.1.

Several people have complained about windows 7. I have tried on two seperate computers. Event viewer errors and full blow debug has been posted. The problem is real.
Sorry, I didn't mean to imply the problem was a fabrication by a few people.  Just that Windows isn't completely shut out for the few of us running Win8.  I agree that Win7 is the primary OS most people use.

I would like to see this sorted out with tools and votes rather than punitive action.  A truly open and decentralized system needs to be able to look after itself without a centralized authority.  This is a great test of what this community can and will do.

If you look at the asset tab you can see the available supply of BTSX.  The delta between it and 2BB is what's been burned.

Not true... people are buying / selling on this chain and that is for keeps...

Doh - of course.  I need more coffee  :P .

At this point in the game we should not blame delegates for missing some blocks (note even init delegates missed some).  There are bugs in the network code that cause things to hang from time to time and even delegates with nodes up miss.   We are working on fixing as many issues as possible.

DAC Sun Limited released things earlier than I would have liked, but at least things are running and people are liquid.   The cost of early release is higher reliance on the initial delegates until the system is robust enough to handle all of the edge cases.

I guess at this point since the only BTSX on the chain are imported from existing wallets a full chain reset wouldn't really cost anyone anything except time (minus fees earned).

Like paying poker with real money vs fake chips I have found the real deal much more educational than the tests now that I have real skin in the game.

I appreciate the thought delegates, but until we see what the income level is and whether it is enough to cover a VPS at $30 per month you may want to be conservative as you can decrease your pay in the future, but not increase it.

Put another way, if delegates can operate on just 5% of the fees, then our transaction fees are 20x higher than necessary and our customers are the ones who pay that price.

So consider carefully who you want to appeal to:  customers or shareholders and strike a balance.   It is possible for delegates to reduce the required transaction fee.   I wouldn't reduce it at this point in time because of SPAM control, but you get the overall idea.

Why can't it be increased?  To prevent people from lowering it briefly?

Yes, it is kind of a campaign promise that is enforced.  Those who vote for you know for sure that they can set it and not have to trust you on that part of it.

Currently at 5% I would need to produce 13 blocks/hr to cover my costs.

Since the transaction fees are likely to go up as is the volume increases and the value of each BTSX should rise as shares are burned and more people come on board my situation should only improve.  My operating costs should stay fairly static so I am OK with this burn rate.  I guess the shareholders can vote for me or not depending on the balance they want to strike between customer and shareholder costs/profits :).

General Discussion / Re: Basic How To
« on: July 21, 2014, 12:27:07 pm »
We need a voting HOW-TO...

   1) Approve some delegates
   2) Transact your whole balance to yourself.

Items to note:
   1) If you approve more than 101 delegates, then 101 will be selected at random from your list.
   2) Nothing changes until you actually make a transaction
   3) When you do make a transaction votes are moved from whoever your stake was voting for to who it is voting for now.

You do not vote for a delegate by sending funds to that delegate.

This clears up a few of my questions.  Thanks!
