Technical Support / Re: How to backup and restore Protoshares-qt wallet?
« on: January 05, 2014, 03:02:30 pm »

The quickest, safest, and easiest way to make sure you backup all you need is to follow these simple steps:

0) Make sure your wallet is encrypted!  This should have already been done anyway so it's step 0 :).

1) Shut down your client

2) Find your wallet.dat file (in %AppData%/Protoshares or /home/<user>/.protoshares)

3) Copy your wallet.dat to another location and called it pts_wallet.dat or something similar so you don't confuse it with your XYZcoin.dat wallets.  For example I have pts_wallet.dat, ftc_wallet.dat, ltc_wallet.dat, btc_wallet.dat, etc. etc.).

4) Put the USB stick or whatever you copied it to in another physical location (in a drawer at work and/or home, your garage, etc.).  Somewhere that can be accessed if one location burns to the ground, gets wiped out by a plague of locus, etc.

5) Restart the client.

6) Rinse and repeat about every 100 transactions to make sure your backups have all your latest change address key pairs.

Depending on your level of trust in online storage solutions you could rename the pts_wallet.dat file to something like mittens.jpg and put it in the pictures folder of your Google Drive or other service.  Since it's encrypted it's reasonable safe from theft (though technically not totally safe) and renaming the file would save you from quick scans by someone who hacks an online storage site and scans for wallet.dat files.

The wallets are really really small.  On most $10 USB sticks now you could even back up the entire blockchain if you wanted to save yourself the time of downloading it again in the future but it's not required.  Your wallet.dat file is like your SIM card in your phone.  Everything else is generic software.

Keyhotee / Re: Keyhotee Founder ID Registration Process

On the "Create your Keyhotee Profile" page, what should be in the Licence # field? I have gone through the registration process, have left this blank. The Creating Profile windows appears, but gets stuck on 100%. Then, I can't login to KeyHotee. ? I should wait for an update. Using Win8 / PC version.

You don't need that field.  It's there to help with the generation of a unique key, and to recover your key if lost or forgotten (someone correct me if it has other uses) but it's not required.  You can leave it blank.

Thanks for update. What if one person own two Keyhotee IDs, is it OK if he use the same identity?

This actually raised another question in my mind. If I have another persons information, what's stopping me from posing as someone else through Keyhotee? I mean like if I had my friends License and Passport/Social Insurance number and created a Keyhotee ID under his name? This would be easily done since you are aloud to have multiple identities.

No worry about this. The personal info. is just for strengthen your brain wallet security, will not be shared to anyone else, it's just in your wallet data. No one can see it and you could not show it to anyone, and even you could show it means nothing... In my mind, the Keyhotee ID is a new identity of everyone, no direct relationship to the real world identity and any other identities(e.g. ID on this forum) in the Keyhotee system itself.

But when Keyhotee officially launches you will be able to purchase things online from say Amazon with your Identity, and they see your name and address.

Amazon support is probably a ways out ;)   But you will have control over who sees what and when.

Yes but if I held anothers information and created an ID with it, and bought something using that identity showing their information, it would come up as that person buying that item correct? Sounds a little like identity theft.

That would be a self-signed ID which wouldn't be as authoritative as having a signing authority vouch for you.

Also assuming they took crypto you'd either need access to their private key to pay for it, steal their credit card info, or pay for it yourself.  So you may look like them but it'd be your cash unless you also stole their money.

Keyhotee / Re: Keyhotee Founder ID Registration Process

Hi, I created my identity but forgot to check "register", and now in the contact my profile shows "unregistered" and highlighted as yellow.
any comment on how to solve it? is it a big problem?

Also after a bit of mining mine went from Yellow to Green.  Not sure if that was related.

Any ID mining is waisted effort as you are not connected to any network.  Green means normal Keyhotee ID.... Gold "Founder" tag indicates you are a founder.  We will initialize the Keyhotee ID blockchain once we have captured everyones public keys and then launch an updated version of Keyhotee that will actually allow you to mine your ID.

Perfect, thank you.  I really only started mining because it was an option and I like to poke buttons :).  I'll stop.  Also, is the pubic key I sent you the one you need for the genesis block?  Lastly, I have gotten my first choice ID.  Can I get my second choice one as well or was it one ID per contribution.  I'm cool either way, just curious.

Thanks!  This is looking really great :).

Your welcome :)

Thanks donshoe, that's nice and straight forward.  Stupid request - Is it possible to reverse sort it?  The most recent line of the current day has the most useful information for decision making but it's allll the way at the bottom :).

The script is appending new information as they appear in the blockchain. prepending the output would be more difficult.
Just use the bot on IRC to get fast information. everyone does. :)

Ya, I need to get on that.  It's been tough to get on IRC lately with work.  Maybe I'll get rich off PTS/AGS and won't have to work anymore lol.

@Surfer43:
you know that you're  paid proportional per block?

some should carry over, to discourage pool hopping

i usually get more on longer blocks
Hmm I seem to be getting more each block, now I'm up to 0.023 / block

Probably miners dropping off increasing your cut.

What's the rush?  Today, next week, early Q1....as long as it's a quality product I see no benefit in having it tomorrow vs next month.  You only get one chance at a first impression and if Keyhotee has teething issues because it was rushed it could adversely compromise the entire project.

I believe I'm preaching to the choir however as delayed release dates vs buggy releases seems to be the direction I3 has chosen.

site is very slow for me =[

Seems to get lag spikes.  I suspect it's under attack.

Nice clean interface.  Note another LTC reference in the FAQ: Send LTC to Deposit address (must be between the max and min)

3. You mentioned "wallet where you do not control the private key (web wallet, exchange, etc)
Does the wallet in BlockChain.info is such?
Can you refer the rest of us to how such 'qualified' wallet is being created.

There is the standard Bitcoin-qt client available from Bitcoin.org.  The client downloads a copy of the blockchain and maintains a wallet.dat file that contains a pool of public/private keys as well as a history of your transactions with those addresses and a few other items.  Since this client resides completely on your hardware you and only you (baring malware, viruses, etc.) control the private keys.  In a situation like Blockchain.info, exchanges, and other online services others may have access, control, or outright ownership of the private keys associated with the public addresses.

I obviously can't speak for everyone but for me I'd rather the delivery a few days late and working than having you guys super stressed out, sleep deprived, and rushed to meet an artificial deadline.

Best of luck on the finishing touches.  Looking forward to seeing the fruits of your labors  8).

has anyone replied with their public key yet?  I got an email saying I got my 1st choice, but, that's all I've done so far...I've sent nothing...

ADDENDUM: looks like I've missed nothing yet! (12/30@12pm central USA)

Same here.  I think that email was just a heads up for further communication.  The next email I expect will have a download link for software we can use to mine our chosen founder ID's.
