General Discussion / Crypti Goes DPOS
« on: January 13, 2015, 12:07:03 pm »
TestZ pointed out on Skype that Crypti is going DPOS:

Quote
Now that v0.1.9 and the optimizations are essentially complete, we will allow a couple days for testing and then officially launch this release. The next release, 0.2.0 will be our DPOS release and will be another major milestone for Crypti. With the addition of the new developers, we are making huge strides with our client and core code that I think everyone will be really excited about!

"Proof of stake continues to be one of the most controversial discussions in the cryptocurrency space. Although the idea has many undeniable benefits, including efficiency, a larger security margin and future-proof immunity to hardware centralization concerns, proof of stake algorithms tend to be substantially more complex than proof of work-based alternatives, and there is a large amount of skepticism that proof of stake can work at all, particularly with regard to the supposedly fundamental “nothing at stake” problem. As it turns out, however, the problems are solvable, and one can make a rigorous argument that proof of stake, with all its benefits, can be made to be successful – but at a moderate cost. The purpose of this post will be to explain exactly what this cost is, and how its impact can be minimized."

General Discussion / Justcoin shutting down
« on: October 28, 2014, 03:40:23 pm »
Justcoin, perhaps the largest crypto exchange in Scandinavia, shuts down after pressure from Norwegian Banks. Justcoin sent out an email to all users saying:

"Justcoin is shutting down all operations. Our bank has notified us that it will no longer accept businesses dealing with digital currencies. The same goes for other Norwegian banks. Without a bank account we have no business and need to shut down. This event demonstrates the need for decentralized payment networks."

General Discussion / NXTTY Marketing Strategy - Android Drop
« on: October 26, 2014, 02:58:04 pm »
NXTTY, one of the more ambitious assets on NXT, are a few days away from launching their Android wallet. They are planning to drop 2500 NXTTY (7 dollars atm) on the first 100k unique (by phone#) subscribers. This is a direct targeting to the masses like what the BitShares marketers have in mind.

Android wallet design pictures:

We should watch them closely to see how well this works, and what can be done to improve their tactics. It is worth noting that market cap is rising on the impending launch, and the information that an air drop will come.. But this happened with Auroracoin etc. as well, and they crashed the second the air drop began, so be careful if you want to invest.

‘‘The startups chasing disruptive technology aren’t working within the existing system. This is the cryptocurrency phenomenon. If it works, we can re-implement the entire financial system as a distributed system as opposed to a centralized system. We can reinvent the entire thing.

‘think about the scenario of a loan officer talking to a prospective client. To software people, that looks like voodoo. The idea that you can sit across the table from somebody and get a read on their character is just nonsense.

The Salt Lake City-based company recently hired two of the developers behind CounterParty ... Code-named “Medici,” the project aims to democratize Wall Street in much the same way bitcoin seeks to democratize currency and payments. By operating separate from traditional stock exchanges and the big corporate banks, it could eliminate certain loopholes in the system and reduce the costs associated with issuing and juggling stock ...We think we have the first string in all positions,” Byrne says, referring to Perkins Coie and CounterParty ...The ultimate aim of the project is to create a stock system that operates, in large part, outside the control of the big incumbent banks ... Byrne is committing between five and ten percent of Overstock’s cash flow—”single-digit millions”—to the company’s cryptosecurity project. “Building this—and being the company that owns this—can be more valuable than Overstock,” he says. “It can be more valuable than Alibaba.”
