Technical Support / Re: No BTS balance - version 0.7.0
« on: March 23, 2015, 04:07:44 pm »
first check if you are 100% synced, if yes
right click your mouse and click on "reload"...   8)

I figured it out. But I can guarantee you 99% of the average users you are targeting won't. What happened was that client has received blocks from the old version, so the new version couldn't continue with the blockchain. Wiping the chain folder worked, but that meant I had to re-download entire blockchain.

My point though is that this is super disruptive and happens all too often. Downloading the entire blockchain took a day. If I needed to make an urgent trade within the "decentralized exchange" I would be screwed. Luckily I am not relying on it.

What a circus this is.

That here explains the price drop. At version 0.7.0, you would expect upgrading to a new version to be less disruptive compared to many months ago.

I am stuck at "Last block was synced 3d 2h 51m 41s ago" and also have a pending transaction from the old version that didn't make it due to "hard fork".

So it shows as "invalid transaction expiration". Lovely.

So we have 10 second transaction confirmations, but 2 days to figure out how to run the mandatory new version. That's gotta be great for trading. NOT.

Technical Support / Re: The DAC Whitepaper, Toolkit and Wiki

Then you should start looking into Eris. I REALLY like what they are doing.
Eris? URL?

https://erisindustries.com/

along with https://decerver.io/ and https://thelonious.io/

Now those ARE much closer to a DAC toolkit than BitShares will ever be.

Sorry I sound so whiny, but as I am a newb, especially getting more and more vested here, I need to know it all before I dump any large sums into this.

I can't help unless I fully understand everything myself (use of the client, use of the online wallet, how to auto-reinvest yield and dividends, how to buy into DAC's that haven't launched yet, accessing the Whitepaper (assuming it's up to date), explaining why/what/how on every aspect of Bitshares)...

1) I'd like to see us offer up DNS service (put a browser in the bts client, offer a chrome plugin, etc).
2) I'd like to do margin trading.
3) I'd like to see Bitshares and Bitassets as an option in all the different arbitrage bots.
4) I'd like a CURRENT step by step "dummies" document that shows me how/why to setup a DAC, or convert my existing companies/employees.
5) I'd like to see the Wiki become a constantly-updated eBook (a Bitshares 101 second edition)
6) I'd like to never see the terms protoshares or btsx again if those are no longer even things that I need to learn about.
7) It's imperative to have up to date documentation, esp when this community is growing and changing so rapidly.
8. I'd like to see a DESIGNATED Delegate whos' sole job is to get DNS going (.p2p, .dac, whatever). The DNS issue should NOT be a side-job or something at the end of the Bitshares todo list.
9) I'd like to see a DESIGNATED Delegate whos' sole job is to keep the wiki up to date.

Confusing people will never foster mass-adoption.

Then you should start looking into Eris. I REALLY like what they are doing.

General Discussion / Re: Are people really this ignorant of BitUSD?
« on: March 17, 2015, 07:52:05 am »

I totally agree with that. We certainly need to distinguish block signers and
business on the blockchain. But I do not agree with simply giving out bitUSD
(although it may arguable be one of the "strongest" FIAT currencies) but pay a
variable BTS (voted by stakeholders, or fixed rate to USD, CNY, EUR, ...

Actually you are right - if it is becoming liquid it doesn't matter if it is a BitUSD or what, since the owner would convert to what they want.

That said - you could still give out a "going rate" in BTS. i.e. why not have delegates compete for how much they want to be paid. So that way the system adjusts based on its market cap automatically. Supply and demand.

i.e. if it costs you $100/month for a server, you would require at least that much in BTS (+ some premium for the services you offer). So delegates can put an offer and compete (They will still need to be voted, so that you don't get someone undercutting the market and taking all 100 positions of course).

Then development should have a separate slate.

Issues I see with BitUSD:
  • It may be stable, but the software isn't. (although it seems to be getting incrementally better)
  • Unreliable cold wallets, etc. (even though xeroc has put together a nice guide, last time I tried it with 2 BitUSD, it got lost, so I would not trust it, and you shouldn't either)
  • On-boarding new users has a horrible deadlock - in order to make sending and receiving "easy" you have to have balance to register. But to get balance out of an exchange you need to register. OK you say - there are existing faucets that will get you started, but those violate privacy in a way that most people in the space are not comfortable with.
  • TITAN is more hassle than it's worth it - would've been nice as an "optional" feature. Transactions details got lost in the process.
  • No cool use cases and example implementations - e.g. Escrow. Most of the code out there is written with Bitcoin script in mind. BTS should have done one of these: 1) Implement Bitcoin script, so that existing engines can work. 2) Implement Ethereum and generate some noise in the process. 3) Implement its own form of scripting.
  • It is naive to think that developers/promoters/etc. "workers" should also be responsible for the network health by running a delegate server. This should have been decoupled (and still could). Make it so people can write proposals and business plans, but then allocated the necessary BitUSD or whatever they require. This would also have generated demand for BitUSD. Since you can make projects funded in BitUSD, but then that BitUSD would be locked in a DAC's account. Duh!

Let delegates be paid whatever a server costs/month + some premium in BitUSD - that would also generate demand. i.e. you'd issue BTS and automatically purchase BitUSD.

Then business plans should be funded separately and according to their needs. BTS stakeholders can vote on whether a project has a good potential to increase the value of BTS. If someone makes a proposal that will cost $1M but would increase value of BTS 10x, wouldn't everyone vote for it? i.e. lock 1M in BitUSD and distribute slowly as long as they meet milestones.

I'd much rather use Warp Wallet https://keybase.io/warp.

20 BTC locked by mere 8 characters are still sitting there up for grabs - nobody has hacked it yet.

Replace Bitcoin with USD - video concerns still apply. This is an extremely shortsighted video, only looking at the issues, and not the positive impact.

chimpanzeecoin.com
coinbirth.com - new DAC projects could be announced here,
coinminingguide.com - mining for bitshares could be listed here
coinmutate.com - decentralized exchange (compete with shapeshift)
coinsecretary.com - good for tax/accounting
coinstructure.com - could explain how DACs/coins work, their reward models, etc.
crocodilecoin.com
deercoin.com
frogcoin.com
giraffecoin.com - stands taller than the others
goldfishcoin.com - grants wishes
hamstercoin.com
hippopotamuscoin.com

I think decentralized storage can be solved a lot easier just by publishing bittorrent trackers on the blockchain, and then incentivizing nodes to host said data.
i.e. pay for renting HDD space and serving the content.

Stakeholder Proposals / Selling for BitUSD and/or BTS
« on: March 05, 2015, 03:12:11 am »
I want to acquire some BTS  and/or BitUS. I have some domain names I'm not currently working on. What's a good place to post those?

I'm not sure what the proper section for that is.

Yes, that video is from when he first announced it last year. Was just nice to see it done so quickly.
