That being said from my perspective (end user of bitshares) nothing has changed between 0.9x and 2.0, i mean that when i say nothing, the wallet is just as hard to set up and use, importing or making accounts is still confusing, using the rpc functions is still obscure and requires a lot of clarification etc, if your an enduser of crypto and don't care about how good the new code is, im certain you find all of this very annoying and that is my primary point.

That doesn't sound like an end user perspective.  From an end user perspective, I no longer have to download a clunky client.  I can just create an account on the openledger website.  I can move fairly seemlessly through markets.  I can delegate my vote.  I can easily create bitassets.  From an end user perspective, this client interface is far superior to 1.0.

What is missing?

1) liquidity
2) 2fa or multi fa, if necessary
3) an easy-to-use tool for offline cold storage
4) bond market - leveraged trading
5) probably other things that I can't think of right now
6) liquidity

IMO bitshares is the most undervalued project out there right now.  Markets are often irrational for periods of time.  This is one of those times.  It looks to me like the price has been basing for 6 months now and could easily enter a real uptrend at any time.

The web interface does not engender trust, it reminds me of the very early Mastercoin web wallets and I was particularly disturbed by "you're responsible for backing up your wallet..." with the dot dot dot and no button or link immediately visible to actually take care of that fact really gives me the feeling that even the active participants and like "We're doing our best but this might not work and good luck getting help if something does go wrong so, meh?"

the only thing on your list of six that matter to me is #5, I am very much hoping that Bitshares offers a relatively easy way to integrate Bitshares into my project Tokenly but from what i'm hearing that is not easy.

The upgrade process first from the 0.4 password bug then the move from 0.9.3c to 2.0 were both time consuming and at times terrifying. Definitely not a smooth or easy experience.

Hi everybody,
I'm interested in integrating Bitshares into the Tokenly open source ecosystem.  We have no budget or personnel to accomplish this right now (just started our angel round, part time founders only and three main products) so I'd like to ask for your help in with either donations, development time or  possibly voting in some Tokenly delegates if that is the preferred way to help new developers get started.

You can visit our "startupey" page at www.tokenly.com but the bottom line is we're building what I call the Global Digital Barter Economy where individual companies create and use personalized tokens to represent pre-paid units of their goods and services.  Tokenly makes it very easy to automate the things that you need as a merchant or individual in order to have a functioning, automated commercial ecosystem.  Swapbot vending machines (selling tokens), Tend stores (selling items, accepting tokens and other forms of money) and the Tokenly Pockets (holding and using tokens) wallet.  We also have the LTB Auctioneer, mass distributor and a handful of other prototype tools and protocols.

We've been in a quiet alpha since July and are getting ready to launch our first open alpha, I'd like to look at the feasibility of integrating Bitshares into our vending machine system, browser extension wallet and store system.  I suspect the store will be easiest, wallet next and the vending machine will require some creative thinking since we try to do everything on the blockchain and obviously this will involve bots that bridge at least two blockchains.

If Bitshares is as useful as it seems, its a shame it doesn't get more use and I think the tools we've built at Tokenly would add a lot of valuable use-cases to the Bitshares ecosystem.  I look forward to your thoughts.

It's always interesting stopping by to see how divergent opinions are dealt with, it's unsurprising but sad to see nothing has changed.

Newmine is one of the very last dissenting voices that has had his warnings about the project ignored and suffered abuse at the hands of an overly protective community for quite some time.

I'd also like to hear the answers to empiricals questions but given how many projects we've now seen partner with bitshares and then produce....nothing..... I have to ask what the value is of adding more partners when it's all just vapor?   Any planned launch date for Bitshares Music/Muse?

Every time I check this forum I see no useful progress on the projects that took funding and haven't yet delivered anything usable but lots more dreams about what could be done in the future.    It would be great to see some working product instead of more promises and funding requests.

I'm trying again using the cli, gotta say this has been the single most difficult get-a-wallet-working experience i've yet come across in crypto.

22
Some time later i'm still not able to access any of my bitshares and i've now tried and failed to get the basic client working on four computers, three PCs and a mac it stalls out and eventually crashes like 50-60% through syncing

I also have an ongoing wallet recovery issue that I fear is going to get worse when the switch to graphene happens
https://github.com/bitshares/bitshares/issues/1509

I suspect the already troublesome process of syncing has been made worse because I have a line of sight internet connection that regularly fluctuates with small drops that I imagine are not making things any easier.

So here's my question
Is there any way to dig a "Backup seed" out of my old and usable (but not sync'd to the blockchain) 0.5.3 account that can be plugged in here and bailed out of?

Are there any bitshares-vanilla compatible 3rd party wallets available where I can import my current wallet.dat?

I've been trying to get my copy of bitshares up to date and stable for literally weeks working on it every few days.  I've had a variety of problems the most recent one is I now connect successfully and load my wallets properly but despite connecting to 19 peers the program usually starts stalling and crashes about 50- 64% into parsing the blockchain.  I'm using an i7 laptop that's a little more than a year old.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

General Discussion / Re: Dan's Interview is on 'Let's Talk Bitcoin'
« on: June 20, 2015, 11:53:32 pm »
+5% That was a great interview.

One thing I don't understand - to what does 'Some Other Castle' refer? I've not heard the phrase before!

Not sure. What my mind immediately goes to is this:

You got it.

The reference is to the development approach that has led to starting over with big parts of the core ecosystem (like the consensus method and now the entire blockchain portion of the codebase) where success appears right around the corner, but when you get there it turns out the journey was the valuable part of the lesson and you've got to start the journey all over again because what you seek simply isn't going to be found where you are now.

I quite enjoyed the interview and am looking forward to getting my hands on Graphene powered Bitshares (and potentially a custom blockchain for Tokenly)

There is an ulterior meaning, LTB usually talks about Bitcoin and a dip into bitshares is akin to visiting "some other castle" where other means different from bitcoin.

You've said that I rejected Beyond Bitcoin, but Beyond Bitcoin is in fact on Let's Talk Bitcoin! and the Bitshares hangouts have never approached me about being on the network.

And yet you're giving me shit, and created a whole thread about it.

See my confusion?  What the hell are you talking about?

Adam there is a difference between "Beyond Bitcoin" and "the Beyond Bitcoin X Shows/Dev Hangouts".

He is a gatekeeper it is simple.

yeah, i'm just going to walk away from this conversation at this point.  I'll say it one more time - Unless I've completely forgotten, the beyond bitcoin x show/dev hangouts (or as I call them the bitshares hangouts since they are specifically about bitshares and the name is confusing) has never asked to be on the network, and they certainly never submitted an episode through our open submission system.  They could do that literally today and then I'd have to make a choice about whether or not it was good enough.

But they've never done that.   So if I've never rejected them, and the part of the Beyond Bitcoin show that DID want to be on the network IS on the network for 10+ episodes with no oversight, etc.....

sheesh

Mostly it seems like you're getting upset that I think people like tonyk (and you) have a net negative impact because you're nicer when someone agrees with you and very suspicious (i.e. protective) when they are asking questions you think might be dangerous to the project or that should somehow only be asked if a person is trying to generate FUD.
Please enlighten us and show where you came here to ASK a question ..

From what I can see from over here is YOU spreading FUD:

... and I'll be shocked if Invictus is not getting a knock on the door come raid day for Angelshares.

The question you SHOULD have asked would be like:

"Hey friends, I heard blabla... what's the status on that issue regarding AGS funds?"

See the question mark?

I'm beginning to see more truth by the empirical evidence you're highlighting xeroc. I won't be quick to kick anybody to the curb, so I will continue to take it ALL in. But it's pretty easy to see the emotion in Adam's latest post, and you do make a good point here.

The question is whether my concern is FUD.  If you don't believe anything can happen to invictus, you'll believe anything I say that suggests the contrary is FUD because that lets you dismiss it out of hand.  It seems obvious I am passionate about people getting real information, i'm equally passionate in trying to explain to the people who want me to shut up why they want me to shut up :)

I didn't say I asked a question in this thread.  I was describing what I call the forum defense force.  In this thread I was sharing my view on the risk in play here specifically because it looked like people were overlooking the fact that AGS was funded by the US company invictus and that of all the targets out there, Invictus is very attractive if the rumor about 6 companies getting got in early november comes true.   Other likely candidates are Mastercoin, SWARM, Ethereum, Digital Tangible Trust, etc.

Or did I misunderstand your concern?

I'm confused - Beyond Bitcoin is on ltb whenever arthur wants to post a new show, he doesn't ask me for permission.  Arthur decided that he wanted to seperate his effort from the bitshares hangouts because of issues between him and fuzz, I have nothing to do with that.  I don't remember fuzz ever asking to have his stuff on the network, but the definitive thing that gets you on LTB is producing a show, which is a little more work than just recording a hangout with random people.

Are you involved with the bitshares hangouts?

You're saying if I don't include content you think should be included, I'm a gatekeeper by which you mean I am inappropriately suppressing you.  If you produce a show and it's interesting, history shows we'll welcome it because the point is good content.  But that's on you, not me - Next time try just emailing me a link instead of making a public spectacle with my name in the title.

Stan....I see you and most all this community I have met as family...you are truly amazing people.  I apologize in advance for any problems my opinions cause...but I protect those I trust to the best of my ability.  Delulo...that includes you..even if we disagree on methods!
I feel you bro... if you feel uncomfortable with this just leave it to me... but keep in mind that when you say it (as opposed to me saying the same thing), everybody knows it comes from the heart!

Ill wait for a cease and desist from invictus for that.  The fact that some of our delegates are paying him, though, for how "respected" he is perturbs me...

And before anyone jumps on the trains to "lets be nice" town, lets please ask ourselves what exactly he has really done other than consistenly imply bitshares is a dangerous scam to those new to the game where he is a gatekeeper.

Fuzz, I'm not being paid Bitsharesx and never have recieved any for anything I did not purchase with my own money or labor during the PTS period.   I agreed to lend my reputation to a delegate Toast wanted to run, I was very up-front with him (feel free to ask) that I was only doing it because there needed to be more delegates and that I would be donating the BTSX earned as prizes or giveaways on the network.

Here's the important part:
I have never received any BTSX from toast or anyone else, I assume he's stockpiling them but I don't have time to devote to the question.

So.... Do I get an apology since your lack of knowledge (or willingness to ask in order to get that information) led you to say things that are just flat out wrong.

What is frustrating to some of us adam...is that you act unbiased.  As for me...im obviously biased and I state it as such.

Also as far as newbies "often" being criticized...jesus.  you obviously do not know xeroc or the other MULTITUDES of people who actually pay out of their own pocket..or time... to help noobies frequently.

As a matter of fact, bbx is there intentionally to give THEM a place where they can have a voice like you do with your show.  Go ahead and ask me if I have received payment for what ive done for these "asshole" noobies...and then when the answer is yes...ask everyone ive given the funds ive received to vouch for me.  It is literally insulting when you throw this crap around.

Second edit:  I look forward to your soon to be announced version of what we are doing here to "open up" the conversation.  If I were here for anything else but full respect the work Invictus has done...id be long gone by now...kind of like I am with bitcoin.

I do not claim to be unbiased, please show me where I say that.  I am explicitly biased based on my view of reality and the facts as best I can reckon them, it's inherently dishonest and also boring to pretend to be unbiased as it means you are non-reactionary.

Perhaps you're taking "non-biased" from my saying that it's important to let facts and reality guide our view of that reality vs. basing reality on what we wish was true because it would be better for our personal well being.  I guess that is a view of bias, I think of Bias more being interest -> action whereas this is more the distortion of looking at a real scene through thick, distorted glass.  The amount and severity of distortion determines to what degree your picture of reality is fractured and personalized (i.e. only you see things that way) or fogged and generalized.   There's not really such a thing as "no distortion" because as humans we have a certain base level built in, for example you can't hear an ultrasonic dog whistle or see IR light with only your human equiptment.   This extends to your mind, perceptions and beyond.    At a base human level, we share a set of broad human level distortions

What is bbx and what does it have to do with ltb?  Have I somehow edited or suppressed you?  I'm confused about your aggro, it's been quite present in your talking at me for a while now, and it's why I started using the forum defense force to refer to you as well.

Ask Daniel if he thinks I act like a gatekeeper keeping out projects that don't follow my every whim, I really think you just don't know what you're talking about and it's very easy for you to know for sure.  Ask them, that's what people who want to know the truth do.
