Interesting.  I think you have the reason wrong though.  Shorters would not compete with each other to offer lower prices because the lower the price the more likely they are to lose money, and the less money they stand to gain.  Instead, I think tying minimum prices to the feed must be to prevent shorters from intentionally forcing the price down in order to cause a panic.

I think there's a multitude of reasons to short lower & lower:
-Manipulate the market (the reason you just cited)
-Being more competitive
-Lack of availability of any bids at the fair price

I remember the first time I looked at the market I wanted to short lower because nobody was buying BitUSD until way down (reason 3)

Decentralized feed is the median of 51+ feeds produced by elected delegates.

How is that price feed used?  Is there a place that I can read about it?

The price feed is used to prevent shorters from offering BitUSD for lower and lower amounts of BTSX. Without this restriction they could short BitUSD down to near zero for the sake of outcompeting other shorters. BitUSD buyers know this and so are forced to offer a fair amount of BTSX if they want to get any BitUSD.

If shorters did succeed in shorting BitUSD to 0 BTSX, then logically an infinite amount of BitUSD would be created, which wouldn't inspire a lot of confidence.

Even Coindesk editors dont have a clue: http://www.coindesk.com/two-words-explain-price-movements-bitcoin/

No mention of mining expenses at all.

Don't give up, it does get through to some people.  I used to be one of the 'hate all altcoins' bitcoin holders until this month.  I got so tired of seeing bitcoin decline, and reading about how all the new mining coins coming in every day were hurting the price.  When I read about bitshares, and how it attempts to be an autonomous company that actually makes a profit that is returned to holders, instead of bleeding money through the expensive mining process, I became a convert.

A dividend paying asset is far superior in the long term to an inflating currency!   That is the key selling point.  And bitshares has the best name to drive this home.  Bitcoin is the currency, Bitshares is the asset!

Amen!

Yes I was in frustrated rant mode when I said it was a waste of time. It definitely is worthwhile (as youve just demonstrated) to try to enlighten others about DAC profitability. Its just difficult to get the message across.

General Discussion / Talking to BTC hodlers about mining is a waste of time
« on: September 23, 2014, 10:47:45 pm »
This is about how after lots of debating on r/bitcoin, Ive concluded there are better things to spend one's time on.

They just come up with so many excuses for why paying for mining is totally fine, and that the price will still go up despite the huge costs of securing the network. Its infuriating.

Ive come to the conclusion that some Bitcoin die hards are masochists - they enjoy feeling the pain of losing money.

Either that or its become like a cult where you can't question anything. Many cults have pointless rituals like mining.

The only thing that will convince them is seeing the inevitably large market cap that will come when dividends + BitAssets really takes off.

This deserves votes - explains how mining waste is impacting the price of Bitcoin:

Voters elect delegates that upgrade as they wish.
How consolidated are btsx shares at this point?

I remember the idea of a btsx rich list was tossed around but with TITIAN I would imagine it might be difficult. I would be curious to see how much everyone's votes really matter in comparison with the large holders.

Why dont you start a poll asking how many BTSX people have.

Upgrading the protocol is easy if the community understands why it is being done and agrees with it, and/or trusts the lead developers. The lead developers simply update the software and users upgrade. Its no big deal.

Also, updates include checkpoint ids which deal with forks.

General Discussion / Coinapult has a centralized competitor to BTSX
« on: September 22, 2014, 08:45:39 pm »
I was perusing r/bitcoin and this advert was amusing to me:

Turns out coinapult has a centralized competitor to BTSX. I sure would love to see what Eric Voorhes thinks of BTSX.

Check it out: https://coinapult.com/locks/info?pk_campaign=Reddit&pk_kwd=Locks

I especially like this quote:
Quote
Locks is a tool that provides the price stability of familiar assets, while utilizing the efficiency of the bitcoin network

It should read something like: "...utilizing the efficiency of a centralized counterparty whose co-founder has already been sued by the US government"  ;)

Great video!

Please make more of these :)

Edit: come on guys lets vote this up on Reddit - it only has 5 votes so far. Max deserves more votes for his hard work.

DAC PLAY / Re: Chess DAC
« on: September 22, 2014, 02:50:07 pm »
Can I pick a side half way through a game to support?

Then can I choose later to vote on the opposite side's move either because I have decided that side is more likely to win so Im switching my support, or Im trying to sabotage that side?

This sounds like it could be a lot of fun to play, as well as quite profitable as a DAC.

Mining is quite simply wasteful insanity and unsustainable. Check out this disgusting picture of a water cooled mining rig:

http://www.coindesk.com/cryptocurrency-miners-turn-exotic-cooling-systems-competition-heats/

Doesnt that mining rig make you want to throw up? Some people would say that rig is clever. But thanks to Bytemaster we know better.

Frodo, I personally dont want BTC to go down the gutter - I think it would be great for everyone if they had a carefully managed transition to DPOS.

Technical Support / Re: !!! Stupid Questions Thread !!!

I just need a cheap piece of crap but would prefer it to be brand new, never opened. I'm moving all BTSX to a dedicated linux laptop. This will be my first linux experience btw!

I bought a cheap atom netbook for linux a few years ago, and it was a horrible experience. My advice is to treat yourself to a semi decent laptop. Especially because the BTSX wallet is quite heavy.

If its your first linux experience, linux mint mate edition is pretty easy to setup. Or you could install Ubuntu and have all your keystrokes sent to amazon.

1. Where can I get a cheap linux laptop?

2. How do I install the BitShares X app on Linux?

3. Is there a GUI BitShares X app for Linux?

For Linux you need to compile it yourself at this stage.

If youre in the US, system76 are highly recommended for Linux laptops.

They aren't the fancy new ones with candles

Are you also only seeing the candlestick charts in the 0.4.15 version? I reverted back to get them.

Also Im trying to find where the web_wallet source code the highcharts library is referenced, but I cant see it  ???
