General Discussion / Do you want stake in DPoS altChains?

I have been thinking about this for a Long time now. In fact, Beyond Bitcoin was the beginning of this thought process and that started over a year ago! But as we continue to see projects like Masternodes prove to us just how correct Dan Larimer was in his understanding of the economics of flawed POW systems, we are going to begin seeing more and more projects move in our direction.
There are a few scenarios I see potentially playing out here (in order from worst to best case--from a BitShares' Investors' reasonable vantage point):
1) Some "better" system arises: meaning it is backed by current entrenched interests and their trillions in stolen cash (gaining 100% traction on every news and media outlet, adoption by all large industries...etc), or a system that is truly more empowering than DPoS (in my mind--highly unlikely).
2) Masternodes will begin spreading through all POW chains, further centralizing the control of the infrastructure away from small holders (because small holders will not be able to combine forces to kick out a masternode).
3) Altchains recognize this and begin cloning DPoS.
So with this said, our community should start considering how we need to move forward in any of these given situations. All the above situations are already potentially in play as we speak and we would never know unless we somehow had a hand in it. It is from that vantage point that I reach out to the community. I hope that we can try to keep emotions at a minimum and look at it as objectively as possible because in the end we are going to have to find a balance between compensation for our community's vision and sacrifice while also working to keep the world's power structures truly decentralized and in the hands of all people.
Let's start:
Threat Cases (From worst to Best from a BitShares' Investors' Long Term Benefit:
1) Some system backed by Goldman Sachs or other huge entrenched interests with unlimited dark funding become acceptable alternatives (sold as legitimate), allying with the current system's players---who care more about short term profits and control over others than Freedom and Liberty, the ultimate reason for DPoS' and TITAN's construction.
1a) Some better system arises for this purpose (again---very unlikely and thus not following the "worst to best" order).
2) Masternodes become an acceptable alternative to DPoS; DAC UN-Savvy investors think of short term profits only and nothing of the dangers of such a system in the long-term. ASIC Manufacturers and controllers of chipset construction gain control of currency creation and always have an edge on those without such power.
3) Altchains recognize the dangers of the prior two situations (absent the unlikely scenario 1a playing out) and decide to switch to DPoS.
3a) They see the sacrifices of many of the community members and offer them a large sum of their shares to pull them away from the BitShares community in an attempt to steal away the BitShares founders (also potentially fracturing the community and setting BitShares itself back)
3b) They choose not to sharedrop on us because they see no reason to, hoping their own communities and networks will prove superior to BitShares'
3c) They Sharedrop on all holders in hopes of converting a target demographic from the original BitShares Chain
4c) They Sharedrop on all holders because we have assets they want to use in order to establish further legitimacy in the realm of cryptocurrency, piggy-backing (and indirectly contributing to) the valuable foundation BitShares and its community has created.
What assets currently currently form our foundation:
- A development team that fully understands DPoS and how to move forward with it---Led by the man who actually Engineered it
- faddat, his code guru and the open source hardware platform customizable for bitshares DACs that sharedrop on us (and on DAWN)
- A core community that has a deep understanding of the possiblities of DACs and DPoS
- A core community of IT experts capable of forking bitshares, building infrastructure and running delegates at short notice
- Beyond Bitcoin Hangouts/Conferences that turns the current Bitcointalk [ANN] model on its head
- Max Wright and BitSharesTV
- A community of Marketers who are working hard and sacrificing together to see marketing efforts through
My initial proposal?
We have less than 6 weeks until one of our biggest competitors launches. I Propose we get consensus from all our assets to move forward to ensure 4c DPoS becomes the Crypto Gold Standard. More to come on my ideas regarding how we do this, but I want to leave it at this to see our community's thoughts and to start the discussion. So let's begin!

Technical Support / Bug with 0.5.3?

I am wondering if anyone knows of a bug with the 0.5.3 client that would cause the harddrive to continue filling up even when the client is not running.
I am not talking about normal downloading of the blockchain either. Something seems to be consistently taking more and more storage space. I have deleted probably 50gb+ worth of content from my harddrive and it was filled up again within a day and a half. It is also causing some pretty big problems with Audacity (as in losing entire hangouts). This might be Audacity too...or even a virus, but I have to first ask about the bitshares client because that is the only program I use that can be expected to still be heavily buggy.
Thanks for any information/advice.

General Discussion / Thoughts about Beyond Bitcoin Hangouts...(please give your opinions)

I have recently been asked to try to improve the viewership of our hangouts. However, there is an issue that I have been trying to consider...and am not sure how to move forward.
It seems that we have high demand for people to listen to the raw audio of the hangouts we have--before the edited versions can even be started. I am nearly certain that those people who go to dropbox to download it do not contribute to the viewer count by listening to the finalized versions.
I also want it open for others to record. The reason for this is because I would like to keep hangouts as open as possible for others to potentially monetize by taking the content, editing it and making their own bitshares-related news platforms. Essentially you could all create your own 10-15 minute youtube videos or podcast segments, or even written articles from the hangout content (which I personally view as "mini-conferences") and post it to your own sites. Who knows, you might even be able to use Roadscape's open source code to get people to monetize it with bitAssets--helping to establish the foundation for a true economy. You all are, after all, the DAC-Savvy investors who will drive the incentive for future BitShares-based chains being sharedropped!
It is already apparent that hangouts (miniconferences) are growing into something closer to full-fledged conferences...and I fully expect that trend to continue. And your showing up at these basically equates to a free press pass for any interested in the content. This is huge and cannot be understated! Though I am not altogether certain how many people fully understand the value of us having our own free-to-attend, weekly conferences.
So all these things that we already offer, as you can see, tend to fly in the face of us being able to maximize viewership for our own sake...because these were intended to be completely open conferences with extremely low barriers to entry so as many people as possible could attend and report live from our hangouts/conferences. This was hoped to help change the paradigm for how most conferences are currently run in the bitcoin/altcoin ecosystem.
In fact, when Methodx came out with NullStreet and told of his hopes to make NullStreet a community-owned and run news/marketing platform, and expressed an intent to have the delegate use multisig to give power to the community on how to best spend the funds, I was so immensely pumped. I immediately reached out thinking we might be able to finally get our community working on creating and advertising each others' content that was based off of our hangouts and future conferences. So pumped in fact, that I even set up a NullStreet room with special privileges for the members/volunteers so they could begin having "secret sauce" meetings on how to move forward with planning.
I had hoped that our DAC-Savvy investors would eventually begin using this content and propagating it, but it seems the best laid plans tend to never work as hoped. This, of course, is to be expected. So I pivoted. I ran for a delegate (and got it in! thanks everyone who voted for fuzzy.beyondbitcoin, btw!) and immediately hired the volunteers who worked to make the hangouts sound more professional (thanks to Mira and Emailtooaj on this). They are not paid enough in my opinion for the amount of work we will all need to do before the marketcap starts significantly rising, but at it is very appreciated nonetheless because we all understand how disliked the idea of "share dilution" is by many in our community.
So now that I have expressed all that is on my mind, reaffirmed why we initially started this whole hangout/conference platform, my thoughts on how NullStreet and the community marketing teams could utilize our conferences to further legitimize BitShares and themselves as "the real deals", let me get to the question:

General Discussion / Project Bring Back Method's Passion...

We all go through trying times in our lives. We all hurt, we all get frustrated and angry with our situations. We all fear "missing out" on any number of things we find important and valuable to ourselves.
When we are in these difficult times it is easy to lose ourselves in feelings of hopelessness to what our higher selves believe is possible. It becomes too easy at these times to lose interest in the beauty of what surrounds us in these moments...and it is the nature of our humanity that we must endure these struggles.
Luckily, the beautiful thing about humanity is our own capability to uplift another person who has lost hope. To extend a hand and our own hope to reaffirm the truth of the infinite possibilities of which we are capable. And the most amazing thing about this existence is that in these instances, it not only uplifts the person who was down, but also reaffirms and empowers those reaching out in their capacity to feel the endless fulfillment of our infinite creative capacity.
Recently I was told by one of our community's oldest friends that he was losing his passion for this project. At first I defaulted to the past when our community had gone through difficult times due to someone in a position similar to his. Method-X is so valuable. And if he loses passion for any project, his presence will be missed.
Every time we hang out, each of you teaches me in some small way to try to be a better person--and you leave me with new questions of what is possible. You have reaffirmed for me the hope that must endure for my passion to continue burning brightly. And with this new-found hope I propose you each extend a hand at this time to an invaluable member of the BitShares family-- Method-X. Please lets fill his inbox with messages of appreciation for all he has done...
If he thinks he has lost his passion for this project, lets prove to him that passion cannot be lost--simply misplaced. Let's lift some couch cushions and help him find it...
