BitShares PTS / Distributions from Exchanges
« on: December 29, 2013, 09:20:49 pm »
Seems to me like the exchanges have a poor understanding of the ProtoShares distribution model.

https://twitter.com/cryptsy/statuses/416991129268019200

That's understandable as we haven't provided much information about this, let alone a detailed guide on how to proceed.

My view is that exchanges should regard the distribution as the property of their users and pass it on. However, we have to recognize this comes at a cost to the exchange. This cost may not even be met by the value of the distribution and the exchange may not wish to add the new distribution unit to their exchange.

That said, I think these distributions will become increasingly used so exchanges will need to formulate a policy in dealing with them. For now,  the best thing to do is to hold coins off-exchange, especially at the time of an announced distribution.

MemoryCoin / [CEO] Preparing For The Top 10
« on: December 29, 2013, 06:18:28 am »
It is my belief that we're going to be a Top 10 coin within a matter of weeks, if not a matter of days.

So that we are prepared to become and to continue to grow as a Top 10 coin, I want to suggest these priorities to our execs, and for discussion by the wider community.

CNO -
What our network needs most is mining on a wide distribution of pools. I think we can most effectively further this aim by publishing open source pool software so that pool operators can focus on competing on reliability, service and price.
Currently a lot of pools are using the same software - a quick win would be to help pool operators to mod this software so it doesn't require passwords - then it can be launched from the GUI with zero-config.
Longer term, I think we want to review P2Pool as candidate for bundling with the GUI.

CSO -
The most pressing priority is to gather all the information about the coin from every corner of the web, and present it, ordered and formatted on the official memorycoin.org website. We also need FAQs with separate pages for each answer. Usually we'll want our support staff to be able to 'answer by URL' so that when they get a question, they can point to the URL with the answer.

CMO -
I think we need a press pack to help news sites who are writing articles about crypto-currencies generally. The more we can help them with this, the more likely we are to get coverage. http://www.squidoo.com/i-want-to-create-a-press-pack

I think the angles that news organizations are most likely to be interested in are
1. Ordinary users (their readers) can run a program on their computer and get MemoryCoin (other coins make this too difficult and aren't efficient for CPUs)
2. Users can store their wealth with their memory (other coins can do this too, but we're going to make a big feature out of it - MemoryWallets)
3. Charitable donations - 1% of the mined currency is earmarked for charity voted on by users

More sophisticated publications might be interested in the DAC aspect of our hiring and voting - that's a really key feature, but difficult to explain in 30 seconds, so I wouldn't push this aspect.

CTO -
I'm going to look at creating a voting interface to make it easy to vote and so that users can see what they have voted for. I'm also going to continue working on the stability of the software and create an installer for windows to make it even easier for users to get started.

MemoryCoin / Pool Mining From GUI
« on: December 28, 2013, 02:40:01 am »
I'll shortly bundle MMCPool's minerd with the wallet and introduce a menu option allowing wallet users to pool mine with just a single click. It'll launch an external process running minerd properly parameterized for MMCPool.

Any other pools using the same network interface (capable of using the same client software with different parameters)  that would like to be included in the GUI - please let me know asap.

We'll need to have a careful think about how to standardize an interface for the GUI to talk to pools, but for now I just want to get it up and running quickly.

MemoryCoin / Election 2720
« on: December 26, 2013, 11:00:40 am »
Following some concerns about election transparency, I've been working to add more debug statements to make the election count more transparent. I'll be checking into github soon, and will include in the next binary. Here's the new look debug file for election at block 2720

MemoryCoin / MMCPool compile
« on: December 26, 2013, 03:41:05 am »
I'm trying to compile MMCPool miner with a view to bundling it with the QT wallet and letting GUI users run it, preconfigured, from a menu option.

Running into this on configure . . . .

configure: error: OpenSSL headers required

How do I tell configure where to find my OpenSSL libs?

MemoryCoin / v0.8.55 - Faster Startup
« on: December 24, 2013, 07:38:28 pm »
New version available.

Windows Binaries and github source updated.

The main change is faster startup, reindex and better performance - previous hashes are cached so hashing is only ever performed once for a block.

MemoryCoin / PSA - Use Hyperthreading
« on: December 23, 2013, 01:13:08 am »
For an experiment I tried mining with hyperthreading switched off in the BIOS. I thought it might lead to a performance increase. I couldn't have been more wrong - 40% decrease in HPM.

Make sure you have hyperthreading switched on in the BIOS if you have the option.

MemoryCoin / PS4 / XBox One

I believe both of these new consoles support AES-NI - they might make excellent mining machines one day.

http://crypto.stackexchange.com/questions/12325/game-traffic-encryption-aes-ctr-hmac
>Another plus for AES-GCM is that if the architecture supports the AES-NI instruction set, encryption will be blazing fast. High-end PC CPUs, the Xbox One, PS4, and the iPhone 5S all support AES-NI,

MemoryCoin / Current Nodes
« on: December 19, 2013, 08:07:09 pm »
If you're having trouble connecting, synching (if you have 0 active connections) with the MemoryCoin network, you can try to connect directly to an active node.

Steps:
1: Open Help->Debug Window->Console
2: Type addnode <ip> add
3: Repeat step 2 with different ip address.

Example: type

addnode 81.17.19.139 add

It may still take some time to connect, but this should improve your chances dramatically.

Here's some ip's that are active nodes as at 20/12/2013 - but better to choose some from the end of the thread - they're more likely to be up to date.

MemoryCoin / Linux Crashes
« on: December 19, 2013, 10:29:58 am »
Update: these seem to be mostly resolved. The option mentioned below doesn't seem to be useful.

I've updated the source with a new option. You can now run with the
-useevp=0

This will switch off the EVP library, which may be the source of a memory leak.

The EVP library is what allows the AES-NI instructions, so performance will be slower. You won't want to use this if you're mining, but for a node or a block explorer, this should cut out the memory-leak crashes.

Let me know how it works out.

MemoryCoin / How To Open Port 1968
« on: December 19, 2013, 09:32:22 am »
If you're having problems synching or disconnecting from the MemoryCoin network, the best thing to do is to open Port 1968 on your router.

There's a guide here to how do that on every different router -

http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/

and there's a more general guide here -

CEO - FreeTrade
CTO - FreeTrade
CNO - fasan
CMO - belltown
CSO - montaxx

CHA - not awarded

I'm happy to continuing operating as CEO in a technical role and relinquish the CTO role if is anyone interested in the CTO role. I think we need someone at CTO now who can look at the linux crashing issues, and produce linux/mac binaries. Anyone interested?

MemoryCoin / GPU Miner
« on: December 18, 2013, 09:08:46 pm »
There's some good news about the development of a GPU miner -

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=355532.msg4029312#msg4029312

Looks like a 7870 has approximately parity with a i7 4770.

Long live CPU mining.
