Technical Support / Re: Hello + block rate question
« on: January 09, 2015, 10:51:23 pm »
This is all very fascinating though, or I wouldn't be putting the time in to engage. I was pretty skeptical (one of my first readings was the bitmarmot stuff which I found hilarious) but I'm starting to see how it can work.

The bitmarmot stuff was pretty funny. One of the most bizarre criticisms of BitShares I've yet seen. I felt pretty sad that so many people seemed to be taking it so seriously. :)

You asked about a rich list, and people told you that we don't have one because of TITAN. I thought I'd explain a little more - the way TITAN works, every single transaction gets a unique address. This makes it very difficult to tell what the balance is in each registered account, since there is no easy way to tell which addresses are owned by which accounts. So we could have a "rich list" of addresses, but it wouldn't be very interesting because the vast majority of addresses are only used one time ever and then thrown away. So a rich list would give you some limited information about recent large transactions, but wouldn't tell you anything at all about who owns what.

General Discussion / Re: [FYI] Nxt release Monetary System (MS)
« on: January 09, 2015, 07:39:40 pm »

Holy shit this is weird.  So you can back coins with NXT and then let people mint new ones by using hash algorithms just like POW.  It is POW but for distribution, not security.  lol...  I don't even know what to think.
and people say BitShares is complicated :)

I've always been skeptical of the "Monetary System." It seems like a feature that would have been wildly popular a year ago, but is totally obsolete now because there are so many platforms for creating assets (Nxt, BTS, XCP, etc). Maybe there's some tiny value in being able to back your coin with Nxt. I don't know.

Any dilution to increase interest rates for a certain class of assets should be shouted down.

Agreed! If we do this, we're no better than all those stupid PoS coins that try to lure users by offering huge staking "interest rates."

Hm...the create a new wallet seems to be taking a long time or stuck. I'm on Windows XP, possibly unsupported?
Yep, probably.

it looks like it does need to get the whole blockchain?

Yes, there is no lightweight client yet. Delegates process transactions, but the anonymity features in BitShares aren't completely straightforward to implement in lightweight clients.

Are these slight delays waiting for blocks to confirm them?

The GUI is pretty slow. Work in progress.

The account key, which I'm guessing is the address, is:
BTS5U5ZJTfiebxXJdwTNXEArsdq4jiXG3AkM1apAvUhYu9PZUrUxq

Yes, but BitShares doesn't really use addresses. When the blockchain has completely synced, register your account on the blockchain and then forget about the account key. Once your account name is registered, you can have people send to the name rather than to the key. You can register an account here: http://faucet.bitshares.org

Okay, so another question: any links to a good source on a maximum transaction rate with the current code? This doesn't seem to be a bitcoin fork, so my typical methods don't apply. Basically: any source on how many transactions can fit into a block? Thanks!

That is correct, this is not a bitcoin fork and your bitcoin intuition doesn't typically apply here. They talk about very high transactions-per-second in Bitshares, but I don't have numbers or references off the top of my head. There is a lot of information here: http://wiki.bitshares.org/index.php/Main_Page

Technical Support / Re: BitShares Balances Estimated Yield

For bitshares? Not bitAssets? There is no such thing as yield on BTS.

I'll just keep posting here since I like the echoes:

I submitted a request via CMC's online form, hopefully they update.

172
Right.  He is saying that CMC is ignoring the trading between bitBTC and USD on bter.  The price listed is only reflecting the trading on the BTS internal exchange between BTS and bitBTC

I'll assume what you wrote is a typo, but just to be sure, I'll clarify: I am talking about the BTC/bitUSD pair on Bter; see the link in the OP. Bter does not currently have any trading for bitBTC.

173
Does anybody here have much to do with Gliss from CMC? We should ask him to include this trading pair in his BitUSD price/volume calculations: https://bter.com/trade/btc_bitusd

There seem to be at least 2 market maker bots running on that pair, and volume is picking up.

General Discussion / Re: [pre-ann] New BitUSD store, looking for feedback

Mmmm, that was pretty damn cool. I'd been meaning to buy the book, and you just made it unbelievably easy.

I liked how I sent the money and then BAM it started downloading. :)

General Discussion / Re: Questions about bitUSD fee and yield
« on: January 03, 2015, 08:17:34 pm »
I can answer 3 easily: go into your client and type

get_asset USD (or whatever asset you're interested in)

It will spit out a bunch of info; you're looking for collected_fees and current_share_supply. If you divide collected_fees by current_share_supply, that gives you the current estimated APR. Last I checked it was around 0.8% for USD.

General Discussion / Re: Nxt is up 12% News?
« on: January 02, 2015, 10:16:52 pm »
I can't see anything worthy enough for such a big move. Intriguing.

I don't understand its value proposition, but Nxt is up because of their "monetary system" launch.

DAC PLAY / Re: [Announcement]BitShares PLAY Crowdfunding
« on: January 01, 2015, 11:37:17 pm »
So... January 5 to February 2, yet another period in which BTS will not go up, because the bitshares community is spending their money on yet another crowdsale instead of buying BTS.

Spoiler for you: it won't be money from the BTS community that drives up the price. Who here isn't already all-in on BTS? We won't see major increases in the BTS price until money starts coming in from outside.

General Discussion / Re: Making the BTC/BitUSD market on Bter

Hey, get out of there! I wanted that spread all for me!

Good to have competition. That is one of the pairs the MM effort I posted about earlier will be targeting

Haha, I saw your post and said "hey! I had better get my bot going quick!" Don't worry, if you get the $20k you were looking for you'll swallow me whole.

General Discussion / Making the BTC/BitUSD market on Bter
« on: January 01, 2015, 09:37:28 pm »
Hey all,
Just wanted to let the community know that I've started attempting to add some liquidity to the BTC/BitUSD trading pair on Bter: https://bter.com/trade/btc_bitusd. I haven't put much money on there, but I'm hoping that the trading pair gets some action and I end up getting the opportunity to put up more cash.

BitShares PTS / Re: To buy or not to buy PTS, that is the question.
« on: December 30, 2014, 11:28:59 pm »
Using this logic, PTS & AGS is already 'included' in the Music DAC (at 35%),  thus sharedropping on the Music DAC would achieve the ends of getting hold of PTS holders.

It would but not BTS holders.

BTS covers the full spectrum.

The problem is that nobody in their right mind would sharedrop on BTS (I know, PLAY and Sparkle just did; that's because they were founded by community members).

This is why:

I know there are a lot around here who disagree with me (Stan being one of them), but I expect that sharedropping large quantities on a functioning coin is unlikely to be effective. If I were launching a coin, I would never sharedrop on BTS because I would expect BTS holders to claim their sharedrop, sell it, and put the money back into BTS. People hold BTS (or any other coin) because they believe it's the best place for their money; why would you expect them to suddenly change their minds and keep a stake in your little upstart, especially since you're likely attempting to compete with them?

People around here like to talk about good sharedrop targets being ones with strong network effects, but a strong network effect may also be an indicator of tribalism and xenophobia (see the Nxt community for extreme examples of this), which will only lead to dumping.
