General Discussion / Re: BitShares Phone Call
« on: April 01, 2014, 08:06:34 pm »
imagine there is a app developed on your apple phone or Android phone which allows you make international calls by depositing any bitassets; for eg, pts or bitshares.

Pretty much needed DAC if developed. Pay by bitassets, btc or bts. Works better on international calls rather than local i guess.

+5% once a DAC can reach beyond the Blockchain and actually touch the world with an API, the whole game changes. No Limits

General Discussion / Re: The Distributed Autonomous Non-Profit (DAN)
« on: April 01, 2014, 08:02:40 pm »
I've had some thoughts on it and I have a model that I think would work well - I give you -

The Distributed Autonomous Non-Profit. (DAN, so named, just to tease him)

Based on MemoryCoin (which itself could be viewed as a DAN) with the following differences -

1. 100% Premined - distributed to trusted organizations in the sector, or a benevolent philanthropist
2. 100% Proof-of-Stake (because mining is wasteful)
3. Angels (instead of officers, varying numbers with varying salaries)
4. Proxy voting (so Philanthropists can delegate governance)

Here's how it works -

1. Angels - these are the people or organizations who are working to forward the DAN's manifesto. They announce their projects or goals and ask for votes. If they win a position, they receive a salary in the DAN's shares which they have discretion to use to further their projects and goals.

2. Philanthropists - these are the people who buy and hold the DAN's shares. By keeping shares off the market it boosts the DAN's share price, boosting funds for the Angels. They can keep score with other Philanthropists and never lose their investment - they can sell it anytime if they lose confidence in the DAN, or pass it onto their heirs. They can even increase their investment by supporting DAN's that other Philanthropists later want to support. Their contribution is the risk that the DAN's share price declines.

3. Governors - someone needs to keep an eye on the Angels to make sure they're delivering on their promises. Governors can ask for a Philanthropist's proxies - a Philanthropist therefore doesn't need to get involved with voting directly for Angels, they just need a Governor that they trust, and vote a proxy. A Governor might also be an Angel and vice versa.

Angels are motivated to deliver to keep Governors voting for them.
Governors are motivated to choose good Angels so that Philanthropists give them their proxies.
Philanthropists are motivated to choose good Governors to keep their investment valuable.

+5% if you can work in a tax deduction, it would be perfect.

General Discussion / Re: Bitshares Lending DAC
« on: April 01, 2014, 07:59:51 pm »
If we partly mirror the Insurance DAC structure, with loan officers rather than insurance adjusters, I think this could work.  If it's as efficient as it should be, existing banks will be able to adopt it and act as loan officers within the DAC, competing for trust on a level playing field with any individual acting as a loan officer.

Great idea to hold this conference.  Let's put the instructional content onto the forums and website to make DAC creating accessible to all.  Even if readers aren't going to make a DAC, they will graps bishares' power and can suggest DAC launching to an entrepreneur friend.

For numerous reasons involving time, BTC price falling, risk, and ROI we have opted to postpone this conference and focus on producing the same educational content for our website.    We still believe that such a conference is needed and are looking for partners in the industry who may want to take this on for us.

Our thinking is that we will simply meet with people by piggybacking on existing conferences.

Accurate. I think that is the reality of it. What it needs though is soft convincing of the current btc community (meaning soft (non arrogant) transitioning of their romantic believes to a competitive open source world where realizing of idealistic goals is possible but not simply by propagating them but by providing the tools that incentive transparency for example or empower people). There are a lot of good developers there!
The real world reason why the currency analogy is less appropriate than the company analogy is that there is competition between open source ownership networks unlike with a "traditional" (or "modern") understanding of "currency" which is thought of as issued as the only legal tender by a central authority.

This all should be easier to see, when new DACs do something other than issue shares called altcoins.

"Distributed Autonomous Company" is to the 21st Century what "horseless carriage" (automobile), "moving picture" (silent movie), "talking picture" (movie), and "information superhighway" (Internet) were to the 20th Century, and "iron horse" (locomotive) and "steam shovel" (excavator) were to the 19th Century. It's an attempt to convey some salient feature with familiar images.

General Discussion / Re: toast's evolving long-term plans
« on: April 01, 2014, 07:42:32 pm »
I read from the newsletter that toast is joining I3 fulltime .
Is it permanent ? I mean, is it a long-term contract or he is only with I3 fulltime for as long as creating bitshares DNS takes?

Nothing in life is permanent, but toast has made the plunge into the crypto space full time and we are helping him make the transition to become an independent DAC developer with his own funding.

Worst case, toast will get some stories out of all this that will last a lifetime. Excellent move.

General Discussion / Re: A Call to the Truthcoin Prediction Market
« on: April 01, 2014, 10:33:51 am »
Wow, I just read your thread on Bitcointalk! :o

Bitshares is all about helping to bring exciting, profitable DAC's to market. Bithshares, via AGS has already raised circa $5 million and PTS is valued circa $9 million, more importantly those funds come from a community of investors already in the thousands that are specifically interested in investing in and supporting DAC's. Besides BitsharesX and Keyhotee, they also already have 4/5 exciting projects in the pipeline. So IMO, if there's anyone whose attention you'd want to get that could both understand and then help in every aspect of bringing Truthcoin to market, it would be Bitshares and ideally, specifically, Bytemaster.

So what do you do when you actually manage to attract Dan's attention and he goes out his way to interact with you, even unnecessarily prefacing his comment with...

"This is a good discussion and I do not want to derail the work presented in the OP as it is good work.   Here are some general concepts to consider:"

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=475054.40

Well somehow, you still managed to be so unbelievably freaking dumb (sorry but it's true) as to think that Dan would in a million years,  need to take time out of his very busy day to promote Bitshares on your 3 page bitcointalk post!?  ???  :o

"Mr Larimer, I respectfully request that you keep any comments you make here related in some way to Truthcoin. I do not feel that your comment sets a good example of relevance. I realize that you'd like to talk about your project, but you have whole websites for that and I just have this one thread."

"..it has nothing to do with Truthcoin and is therefore completely off topic." "Finally, as I already explained..."

"This reads like a BitShares advertisement, when my intent was merely to answer a question regarding a comparison. Truthcoin does not have margin calls and cannot force any trades, whereas BitShares can, as you restate here for some reason."

Personally I love the concept and think it has HUGE value if it works. But the fact that you've so poorly misjudged such a basic social interaction and showed such terrible business acumen in the process (by potentially slightly alienating one of your most influential leads) makes it hard to believe as an investor, that you've considered all the business/social variables that would go into making the concept work in practice. I do hope to be proved wrong though.
I did read too the bitcointalk post. Although I agree that Bytemaster was not promoting Bitshares it could be interpreted that way. I thinks tough  harsh  comments are unnecessary. This post it is about a project that seeks to work with 3I it is not a war of ideology. The bitcointalk post was meant to expose a different take on PM and it was a pretty interesting debate. Bytemaster will be the better judge if this project will work as a DAC or something else. I really hope it will.
I did't not finish the whitepaper but this seems  very interesting, I'll will like to welcome  AsymmetricInformation in our community  those kind of ideas and brilliant people could only straighten our community and bring huge value like you said.

Didn't see the purpose of this post either. Collaboration is always welcome if it makes sense.  Might be a good fit there!

Maidsafe and us are working together on things... not a competitor, more of a partner.

Is it already happening or it's the plan?

I have been talking with them about integrating our DNS system with their system.  We already have in person meetings / design sessions planned for NYC.

88888888 ?  BLEH, I hate it.
Just make it 8,000,000.  That's easily divisible and ratios are easily calculated in BTS, BTS, AGS, etc.
Ya all the 8s are a bit much. I just spoke to a Chinese friend and she says the 8s are a sign of 'new money'. More of a gambling thing. So maybe just the one 8 is fine. 8,000,000.
+5% agreed, one 8 is plenty lucky and easier on the eyes

General Discussion / Re: TANSTAAFL: Risk
« on: March 31, 2014, 12:23:26 pm »
There are two problems I see with this approach.

First of all is the political problem.  It would be very un PC that the heterosexual male that does not engage in any anal intercourse has a much lower health/STD premium than the homosexual male.

Secondly would be the market pressure to lie about ones risky behavior, and the necessity of allowing the adjuster to examine very personal parts of our lives to determine if we are within acceptable risk parameters.

The nice thing about the free market is that political correctness is irrelevant and only value/free exchange matters.  I think this is more of a GOOD THING than having to suffer through ObamaCare and its PC insurance that makes men pay to be covered against pregnancy...

The second part would also be balanced by the market.  The more you are willing to let the adjustor pry, the lower your rates can be.  You pay for privacy.

In the spirit of "Political Incorrectness", I'd like to start by saying, "Obama Care is an abortion waiting to happen at best a still birth".

But, long before it reared it's head, we had an unsolved problem.

Can a DAC solve the healthcare crisis? Absolutely.
Do we in this community have the skills and resources to take on the task? Yes, without a doubt.

Though, I believe Einstein once said, "Things are simple, but not simpler".

If we are to tackle this Goliath we'll need to start with low lying fruit, easy and obvious solutions with short times to market, each serving as incremental steps complementing each other.

I see the MAS DAC as one of these incremental steps, many will follow, not all decentralized (at least not at first).
