It is hard to tell what the purpose of this organization is, and the founder biographies are a bit vague.

General Discussion / Cryptsy in disarray

"The popular cryptocurrency trading site Cryptsy.com has been having some noticeable issues these past few hours. Users of Cryptsy have been reporting negative balances, frozen transfers, suspended withdrawals. Speculation is that a recent update is causing the issues. Cryptsy is aware of the issues, but no official statement has been released yet."

Unimercio and I are setting up the administrative office in Miami's financial district—highest concentration of international banks in the USA!—for something more formal than a Meetup.com group to promote DACs here in South Florida. We'll have access to conference facilities and even a swimming pool. The plan is to record formal sessions like the one in the link that you provided, as well as impromptu interviews with entrepreneurs and incumbents here.

Rather than leaving it to random entrepreneurs to come up with solutions in search of problems, we want to reach out to people in international finance who have problems in search of solutions.

Very nice! This must be much more inspiring than spending the time staring at the same lines of code, day after day after day.

Apologies if some of my formulations above come across as irreverant. My OP was somewhat tongue-in-cheek, but the underlying sentiment is very serious.

I live in South Florida, which is a patchwork of wealth and poverty that has been described as Brazilianization. I very much am looking forward to introducing BitShares to people who would stand out at a Bitcoin conference like a Klingon at a Star Wars convention.

We have very large communities of Argentines, Brazilians, and Venezuelans here, whose relatives are severely restricted in how much money they are allowed to take out of their countries.

Also, we have a huge Haitian population. A few months ago, I met with a Haitian activist who runs a shared workspace for entrepreneurs within bicycling distance of the house that Trayvon Martin grew up in. They told me that some Musicians in Haiti have millions of fans, but do not receive enough of the proceeds from their music to afford to visit a hospital, if they are injured. When I learned that BitShares Music is already under development, I felt like a kid on Christmas Eve.

Since Bitshares is a subsidiary of I3, your positions with Bitshares and Bitcountant doesn't generate a conflict?

Not accusing anything, just wondering.

Bitcountant has been serving Bitcoin entrepreneurs since July of 2013. Angelina Pluzhnyk is the principal, and I assist with finance and write the occasional R script to calculate capital gains for day-traders. Clients who need help negotiating with the IRS can be referred to our third partner, who is conversant in Bitcoin but not active here.

If BitShares replaced Bitcountant with another accountant, it would be disappointing but not devastating. As I indicate above, there really isn't all that much to do for BitShares. AGS contributions come in; BTC and PTS get spent.  There isn't much to it.

When people here start generating revenue with BitShares DACs, Bitcountant is available for them, as well.

My role with BitShares is to analyze the economics of what Dan and the other developers are creating, and to document various aspects of DACs from the perspective of accounting and finance. Standard textbook models to not reflect DACs very well, and it is a rare opportunity to be on a first-name basis with the leading names in a truly new industry.

As Stan put it, it seems if Bitcountant were replaced by Deloitte, would the new Bitshares Chief Economist be Salzberg or someone else employed by the firm? Seems strange to me if this were the case.

I've heard the phrase Gig Economy used to describe today's labor market. Not since the 1960s has lifetime employment with a single, large firm been the norm in the USA. Today, we are moving beyond the serial-employer career to the parallel-client career of the itinerant professional.

These days, my time is taken up predominantly by BitShares with the odd consulting job here and there.

General Discussion / Reaching out to the Left

Although not explicitly stated, it is pretty clear that the vast majority of those who know what the acronym "DAC" stands for embrace some libertarian variant of anti-authoritarianism. We almost never see anti-authoritarian leftists in our midst.  In this, we are missing out on an incredible opportunity.

http://www.yesmagazine.org/new-economy/bitcoin-for-activists-what-you-need-to-know

Only very rarely might one see a band of Rothbardians or Objectivists willing to stand up for their beliefs in front of a water canon in freezing weather, but hold an IMF or Bilderberg Group meeting, and leftist radicals will show up in large numbers in spite of tear gas, concussion grenades, and dogs.

That's the kind of dedication that we need!

Considering that Bitcoin is associated with money, per se, and leftists typically hold money in disdain, we might get some traction among them with BitShares.

For example, someone could use BTS ME to issue Protest Hours (XPH). The movement organizers could exchange XPH for anything else of value, including BTC, BTS, BitUSD, etc., that rally organizers could use to reward protesters who show up at a rally. After the rally, anyone in possession of a unit of XPH could use it to redeem from the movement organizers some fraction of what the rally organizers paid, or better yet use the XPH as a medium of exchange within the activist community.

If the shares circulated as an intra-community medium of exchange, a would-be radical just getting started would be able to look at the market prices of the different movements' shares and either join one with a high market cap or help out one of the underdogs.

Alternatively, the movement organizers could fund their activities with a Distributed Autonomous Charity.

Either way, rather than compete for attention among existing Bitcoin users, we could recruit within a largely untapped market that includes environmental, food, anti-exploitation and anti-human-trafficking, pro-choice, feminist, LGBT, and peace activists. While one might not agree with their agendas, decentralization does imply diversity of thought, and they do have the numbers on their side.

People love shit that's exclusive, like Facebook when it first came out.  Possible to make airdrops feel exclusive, while including as many as possible?

Have people sign up for an invitation to the beta, and promote it on r/Bitcoin. That way, you get to a likely audience, and only those interested take up your time.

Also, BitShares supporters in Los Angeles, New York, and South Florida should have little difficulty finding B-List celebrities who might be looking for something to draw attention to them.  Maybe we could recruit some to identify airdrop recipients.

That was the part that bothered me the most.

Scrutiny is one thing, scurrilous accusations are something else entirely.
