Hello. My name is Earl and I need your help.

Recently I've started to worry. For all I know the BitShares rocket may never reach escape velocity, but what if it does? I realized I wouldn't be ready. I want to be on-board the rocket, and I want to bring with me some animals. Thinking of different animals is only my second best skill, so I need your help making a list.

Also, I need two on-ramps. One is for getting the animals onto the BitShares rocket, the other is for getting more BTS with BTC or fiat. Any suggestions? I've been away and am unaware of current options you see..

Anyway, back to the animals. I've already gathered my favorite animals:
  • Silent Lamb
  • Mothman
  • American Weirdwolf (I found it in Plaster, Paris)
  • Dog Soldier
  • Blob
  • Giraffe (should fit in the rocket's central shaft)
  • Human Centipede
  • Donny Rabbit

I've already thought of these ones for the list:
  • Elk
  • Dingo
  • Aphid
  • Man-at-Sea-atee
  • Triceratops
  • Water Bear (Tardigrade)
  • Slow Loris
  • Human
  • Larimer
  • Potato
  • Water Boatman
  • Anopheles Mosquito (could we eat these?)
  • Zooko

I'm not counting viruses as animals, and I don't want to take any benthic crawlers because I think they're too mentally attached to the Earth to want to come with us.
Can you think of any more?
Does anyone want to help me? (Or tell me to shut up?)
By the way, centipedes only have one pair of legs on a body segment, whereas millipedes have two. And can we paint the rocket blue with pink extremities?

The title says it all. See here.

Am I allowed to announce this, or should I have waited for one of the team to do it? Dunno...

"Hungarian government plans to criminalise the use of encrypted services"

Look at this article from mappingmediafreedom.org!

This sort of stuff is worrying. Imagine going to prison for two years for using BitShares! Or WhatsApp! Oh my word...

Quote
31 March, 2016 – The Hungarian government plans to criminalise the use of applications for encrypted communication.

The measure is part of a new antiterrorism legislation package put forward by the Interior Ministry, and was first presented on 31 March by János Lázár, the Minister heading the Prime Minister's Office.

If the package is implemented in its present form, anyone caught using encrypted software can be punished by 2 years of prison. The providers would be obliged to ensure access to the content of the encrypted messages, and they would have to provide the identification data of the users as well as the IP address used for registration. Failure to comply qualifies as misdemeanor, and is also punishable with a 2 years prison sentence.

The antiterrorism package also contains provisions regarding an increase of surveillance in public spaces and enables the Interior Ministry to prohibit mass events.

Do we have community members from Hungary?

Continuing the discussion from BitLaw - Polycentric Law in Crypto-Space (part 2)1:

It deserves it's own thread.

I just met the founder of https://followmyvote.com/15

These guys are legitimate. It is really beautiful piece of technology. They want to release it in July-ish to get ready for the 2016 election cycle. The reason being that they want to expose the voting fraud. One could use their software, and gov software and compare of the two. The non-anarchist will soon realize how corrupted the system is. That is their goal.

Random Discussion / How I accidentally ended up on the BitShares website
« on: January 20, 2016, 05:07:22 pm »
I typed into my browser URL bar "coinmarketcap.co" - I accidentally hit 'enter' before I put the 'm' on the end of the address.

Where do you end up if you do that?

I saw a flash of a view of the BitShares wallet, and the ended up on https://bitshares.org/?r=winkdex

I didn't know that would happen...

I'm using BitShares-light_2.15.292 on Windows 7, and getting an error when I go to "Application > About Application". Anyone else getting this?
I got the same error with previous versions of the client too. I'm almost an ignoramus with computers, so I don't know what this means...

General Discussion / Promo to bring in new users?
« on: October 23, 2015, 08:07:03 pm »
I'm impressed by the ability of BitShares to make changes to parameters very quickly and efficiently. This gives me an idea which I want to run by you all. Let me know if it's feasible. Also let me know if it's good, or if it gives you any more ideas which could be useful...

Events could be organised whereby blockchain parameters are tweaked in order to create some kind of special offer for users for a limited period of time. The idea would be to give new users an incentive to try the platform.

Imagine using BitShares' flexibility to run promotional events ON THE BLOCKCHAIN: discount days / happy hours / black friday sales / try-it-for-free specials.

We could do offers on:
  • Memberships
  • Account registrations
  • Transfer fees
  • Market fees

I'm not saying we should do anything like this soon, but it may be worth considering at some point in the future...

(As a matter of interest, is it possible to allow a limited number of free transactions per account during a short lived event? I don't know if the back-end allows for this... probably not?)

Random Discussion / SourceForge is broken since yesterday...
« on: July 17, 2015, 05:55:45 pm »
What On Earth is going on?
The sourceforge.net website is temporarily in static offline mode.
Only a very limited set of project pages are available until the main website returns to service.

Here's the twitter feed.

I just started looking at an interesting project a few days ago (never really paid attention to SourceForge before) and SourceForge has broken!

What are the differences and similarities between github and sourceforge? I'm not knowledgeable.
Hopefully shit like this will be avoided in the future as things progress with the decentralisation and anti-fragility type movements...

Until BitShares has a solution implemented for everything, you may be interested in open-source-email-provider-to-be Lavaboom.

Lavaboom is a zero-knowledge email provider, the first of its kind.

It looks promising, and is in beta with the ability to reserve usernames.

Maybe you'd like to reserve 'BitShares_forum_handle@lavaboom.com'?

You may want to look here on reddit also.

Technical Support / What happens to bitBTC if BTC forks?
« on: July 01, 2015, 10:31:09 pm »
I was listening to an interview with Mike Hearn talking about the block size debate which is going on with bitcoin.
I imagine it is possible that bitcoin could fork, such that there would, at least for a time, be no definite consensus on which was the 'real bitcoin'.

If this occurred, what would happen in the short term with bitBTC?

edit: This is resolved - bytemaster says the "one transaction per period length" restriction was removed a while ago. The documentation is out of date.

Looking here on bitshares.org:

Quote
After a user grants the withdrawal permissions, the authorized account is allowed to make one transfer per period of an amount up to the limit.

Is there any reason for restricting it to one transfer? If there's no good reason, this is sub-optimal because it unnecessarily rules out certain use cases.

This is the list of properties for recurring payments on bitshares.org:

Quote
A withdrawal permission includes following properties:

  • Start Date
  • End Date
  • Withdrawal Limit per Period
  • Period Length (i.e. 1 month)

If it's not a mammoth technical problem, it would be a significant improvement to add:

5.  Maximum Number of Transactions per Period (from 1 to unlimited)

I'm assuming there must be a good reason for the restriction, and if this is the case, can someone tell me what it is?
I also assume that it's obvious why adding the "max. no. of transactions" variable would be better, but if this isn't the case I could elaborate with some examples...

Random Discussion / There's a weird on this forum!

 :)
Why, when I hover over the " :) ", as I compose a post, does the pop-up description say, "Hi, apparently this text is editable."?

Most of the other descriptions say things like, "Sad", or, "Shocked".

I'm hoping this isn't an indication of some kind of unauthorized hack, but rather just a curiosity...
