Open Transactions perhaps would be of interest to you? Not very 'blockchainy', but I don't know how tightly you want us to fit in with your stated requirements...

Technical Support / Re: What is the next big thing for BTS?

Growing the pie doesn't happen over night.
yes,but when?5 years?10 years?
I don't think people will have this kind of patience.do you?

When I got into BitShares the timeframes I was envisaging were in excess of five years. Looking at price changes day to day, week to week and even month to month is all well and good for the active trader. I'm looking at the big picture though and am interested in the long term ground breaking potential which I see in BitShares.

To answer the OP, I'm pretty curious to hear what bytemaster has planned in relation to 'web of trust' stuff. I remember him saying in a mumble session that we'd love his ideas in this field. As far as I know he hasn't revealed this yet. Has he? I'm not sure whether or not his plan is to be implemented on the BitShares platform though...

I'm using BitShares-light_2.15.292 on Windows 7, and getting an error when I go to "Application > About Application". Anyone else getting this?
I got the same error with previous versions of the client too. I'm almost an ignoramus with computers, so I don't know what this means...

It's a bit like playing "Where's Wally". I can see BitShares in the bottom-right under smart contracts. Cryptonomex I can see in the bottom left under services. We should really be in most of the boxes I suppose...

General Discussion / Promo to bring in new users?
« on: October 23, 2015, 08:07:03 pm »
I'm impressed by the ability of BitShares to make changes to parameters very quickly and efficiently. This gives me an idea which I want to run by you all. Let me know if it's feasible. Also let me know if it's good, or if it gives you any more ideas which could be useful...

Events could be organised whereby blockchain parameters are tweaked in order to create some kind of special offer for users for a limited period of time. The idea would be to give new users an incentive to try the platform.

Imagine using BitShares' flexibility to run promotional events ON THE BLOCKCHAIN: discount days / happy hours / black friday sales / try-it-for-free specials.

We could do offers on:
  • Memberships
  • Account registrations
  • Transfer fees
  • Market fees

I'm not saying we should do anything like this soon, but it may be worth considering at some point in the future...

(As a matter of interest, is it possible to allow a limited number of free transactions per account during a short lived event? I don't know if the back-end allows for this... probably not?)

Since it is an operation on the blockchain there must be a fee for that.

Tomorrow I shall listen to this and 'Security Now!'. Thanks for the heads-up.

It's a good idea for someone to create such a feature, perhaps as a third party wallet or app of some kind. I she that many people would love it! I suspect it won't be put in the reference implementation. The points made in the above posts give some relevant reasons.

I'm curious to know what you've tried so far. In the most recent mumble session bytemaster suggested using the CLI software if you're having trouble as a result of having many keys to process.

edit:

Above is the download link for the CLI from the release page.

General Discussion / Re: Core dev respond to GUI criticism
« on: October 18, 2015, 11:58:19 am »
I'm very happy with the GUI, but decided to try to find a way to improve it. This is the first thing I came up with, and I think it's important:

The wallet should "Auto-lock" after an operation (if it was locked beforehand).

As it stands at the moment, if the wallet is locked when you request an operation requiring your private keys, you must enter your password. This unlocks the wallet to enable the operation, and the wallet then remains unlocked afterwards.

I would prefer to see the wallet automatically return to the state it was in before the operation was requested. That is to say, if it was locked before the operation it should automatically lock again after the operation. If it was already unlocked, it can stay that way.

Examples of my reasoning:
  • Security best practices - there's no point having it unlocked unnecessarily.
  • User doesn't have to remember to lock the wallet after an operation, such as transferring some money.
  • Protection from mistakes - the wallet can be locked for the majority of the time, so average Joe can mess around, exploring the wallet without worrying about accidentally doing something stupid. The request for a password would act as a prompt to think, and it offers peace of mind.
  • Protection from bad actors, and from children mashing the keyboard in the case of the a wallet left unattended!
  • Protection from a malicious person waiting for you to carry out any operation, who could then forcibly take over your wallet and have unhindered access because it doesn't lock itself afterwards.
  • The user can always manually unlock the wallet and leave it in that state if they're doing loads of operations.

Are there any arguments against what I've said? I can't think of any good ones...

Hey fuzzy, the link you put in your OP... I don't get it. Did you make a mistake? It's just a post with someone asking how to become a committee member...

General Discussion / Re: Bitshares price discussion
« on: October 15, 2015, 08:01:02 pm »
When I buy, I buy to HODL because:

I'm here for the cause man.  If I get rich along the way then all the better, but if bts went to 0 I would be way more bummed for the future of humanity than I would be for any money I lost.

If I buy to hodl then I can't go wrong at these prices - if BitShares succeeds it's an obvious win; if it fails the price is pretty much irrelevant anyway!

Also:
Remember we are trying to grow the pie of our investors, not just fight over the same crypto people that every other coin is.

Attracting a whole new demographic is not going to happen 2 days after launch.

Not gonna sync the bts1 blockchain beyond the snapahot time .. so I am out [emoji14]

well you know. you do not have to sync it. I trust you enough to buy the keys. :)
I wonder if there are any people who'd sell their BTS 1 keys before they've claimed their balance and changed keys in 2.0... :-X :P

OK. I'm wondering what the damage is in terms of resources and also the number of names scooped up.

I found this suggestion from sudo worked for me. (There are a few other comments in that thread - e.g. some people find it necessary to run the client as administrator).

So, @sudo said to use:
Code: [Select]
wallet_export_keys c:\bts\bts.json
I just used that exact command, then moved the file to elsewhere afterwards.
