General Discussion / Re: ripple rally
« on: November 26, 2014, 06:18:19 pm »
Would it be technically possible for Ripple to implement market pegged assets? They have all the gateways set up, and the speed.... Whats stopping them from implementing a "contract for difference" market of their own, using XRP as the collateral? Maybe, the reason why they don't is that It might piss off all the bankers they seem to have made friends with?

Rune seems to have an abundance of brilliant ideas, but I would advise caution.  Remember, "game theory" is subservient to the actual world, not the other way around. It would be foolish to underestimate the ingenuity and resourcefulness of thousands of heavily invested and determined people, just because your "models" predict a high probability of success. I know we cannot deny that his idea is compelling, and that it should perhaps even be attempted, but I hope whomever decides to move forward with this crazy plan might carefully consider a few points:

1: It is very dangerous. "Success" could take many forms, none of which are easy to predict.

2: This could blow up into "Blockchain wars" cue Luke Skywalker and the gang. Forget about Bitshares, what if this results in some sort of rift in the general (public) confidence of blockchain technology itself.... Do we want to play with that kind of fire at this stage?

3: Does our benefactor, the great Original, deserve to die such an ignoble death? (I know, kind of silly, but can something truly noble be born of such hostility?)

4: WTF is Litecoin? If someone could explain to me why Litecoin is not the perfect target, please do so.....

If the new tokens would have no features other than potential snapshot allocation, then why on earth does it need its own DPOS chain?
If you want to continue this experiment, fine, but would it not be much easier to issue a PTS user asset on BTS?
I know this question has already been asked, but respectfully alphaBar, could you explain the reason for PTS needing its own chain?
What will be the incentive for delegates to run nodes? Only transaction fees? Surely not shareholder dilution......?

1) the "wallet master key" cannot be exported with dump_private_key .. only with the in-app backup functions (that why we have that feature in the wallet btw)
2) you can only export the account owner key for a account - unless you made market transactions, the owner key is sufficient to regain access to the account
3) a account master key SHOULD NOT be imported with the "import WIF private key"!!! but using the console as described in http://wiki.bitshares.org/index.php/RecoveringFunds
4) is your account name registered on the blockchain?
5) if registered account name: go to console and type "wallet_import_private_key PRIVKEY"

Besides that:
6) why would you DELETE a wallet!?!?! ALWAYS keep a backup!! it's just a few 100kilo byte .. print it on paper if you don't have a usb stick

Thanks, as always, xeroc - I managed to import the account, and I'm re scanning the blockchain now

Yeah, I know I should have originally saved the .json file, but the wallet was crashing relentlessly, and since I had the owner key, I knew that that would be enough to recover my funds. I have not messed around with the asset market yet, so it looks like  all of my funds should be recovered. You are right to scold me about being foolish, though, and I will be using the in app backup after each transaction from now on....

General Discussion / Error parsing WIF private key?
« on: October 29, 2014, 06:53:59 pm »
I am trying to restore my wallet using the master key. The first wallet I had (back in July) I transferred a balance from bter. That wallet kept crashing but I managed to dumpprivkey (or whatever the command) and made a copy of the "master" wallet key. Then in September, I deleted the old wallet and installed the latest version, and was able to restore my balance by typing the key into the "import WIF Private Key" on the GUI. I didn't move the balance, but I did add additional funds to the account name from bter. A couple days ago, I decided to wipe my hard drive and re install windows, and install the newest version of BTSX. It is fully synched, but when I try to import the key using "import WIF Private key", I get the message "Error parsing WIF private key"

This is really nerve-wracking.... I hope someone knows of a solution  :)

Are we so desperate for marketing "tricks" that the op now suggests we seriously debate engaging in such a transparently fraudulent measure?

Geez, I didn't realize our great experiment was in such peril....

I hold no degree in advanced economics, but the notion of an interest rate guarantee backed by inflation/dilution seems to me like some sort of twisted 'quantitative easing'. Am I missing something?

It was a proposed idea being met with a lot of resistance. I would say it's not going to happen. Which is exactly how this community is supposed to work.

#1 best answer to my rhetorical questions  :)

Guess I'm the one that was missing something ;)

LOL - I wish somebody would come up with a way to signify "sarcasm" when writing a post...... it would just be so damn useful

General Discussion / Re: Have we passed a centralization tipping point?

I suppose you value developers time a 0 then?    Are they supposed to transfer value of their time and opportunity cost to everyone else for free.

Suppose developers went on strike you would want to hire new devs right?  Who should pay for it?  Doesn't the market cap grow as a result of developer effort?

It's complex. Do you consider time spent as "capital"? Also, if the developer owns shares already, then he can be compensated through profit/appreciation. If you went on strike it would not be in your benefit, as a shareholder. I'm all for compensating the work, however I think it may be unnecessary to throw loads more cash at the devs, at least at this point in the game. I think I3 has plenty of cash, and if they start spending it as if they had more funds, then all the shareholders could see that they're capable of results, and will give them more.

It would make sense for you to stop working only if you sold all your shares, or you felt that the amount of shares you own are not enough, both of which I think are not true.

Please correct me if I am misinterpreting what you are suggesting.....
Is it your argument that the developers spend their time and effort to improve the bitshares ecosystem simply because it is in their interest as shareholders? That they should work for free because their efforts would result in an increase in price of the shares they already own?

Edit: And of course increase in the price in the shares you own as well.....?
