General Discussion / Public Apology and Thank You
« on: January 21, 2016, 06:53:08 am »
It's time for my New Year's confession. I'm usually nice and am one of the first people to welcome and help new community members, but at times I can be a bit of a curmudgeon. It's tough love, but quite understandably some may take it the wrong way. More specifically, I had doubts about a couple of community members when they first came here. I was wrong and I'd now like to apologize to those people.

@kenCode , you are working tirelessly on behalf of BitShares and I want to thank you. I hereby apologize for doubting your sincerity some months back. You seem like a very good person and full of great effort.

@kuro112 , I poked fun at you in a couple of threads when there was some disagreement over your software delivery. I knew little-to-nothing of the situation and had no business saying anything negative. You Freebie guys are developing a great track record. You seem honest, you seem committed, you get things done, and I think you've been wonderful for BitShares. Thank you for all your good work.

@fuzzy , I don't think I've ever slandered you, but I have sometimes publicly disagreed with the direction. I do appreciate what you are doing and thank you for working so hard to build a decentralized community.

Please find it in your hearts to forgive me. But please, don't send me any more of your crapcoins!  ;)

This poll is for anybody/everybody. What do you think are the main barriers to entry for people using BitShares? What are the most common objections you hear?
If we can isolate some of the main reasons why not, then perhaps those are areas where we should focus our energy making improvements.
--------------------------------
Imagine you were introduced to BitShares recently and chose NOT to use it. Why not? Feel free to post and explain your reasoning.

We have talked about a reputation system having a larger role for BitShares and/or society. Looks like China is introducing one run by Alibaba and Tencent. It has both financial credit and statist propaganda elements.

Would there be any way for us to create a charitable community foundation with a BitShares address and then eliminate all transfer fees on transactions to that address? I'm not a big fan of creating exceptions, but if we all could donate our dust or unwanted UIAs, it might add up to something for a charity with a pool of such donations.

General Discussion / Economist article: The promise of the blockchain

This is a short piece from The Economist. It mentions a public ledger for banks. Most importantly, it looks beyond Bitcoin.

General Discussion / BTS bonfire tracker
« on: October 18, 2015, 04:32:01 am »
Is there a way to add a tracker to the website that show how much BTS is being burned (either on a daily basis or in real time)? I think such a feature would increase traffic and help create a buzz around the ultimate profitability of this blockchain.

General Discussion / Is Bitcoin on its Deathbed?
« on: September 24, 2015, 06:06:16 am »
Interesting coverage of a recent panel discussion with notable Bitcoin company CEOs (see link). It seems a number of Bitcoin movers & shakers believe it could be replaced by a next generation currency. I wonder what that would be. Hmmm...

I know this is historic, but it seems like they did it just for the sake of doing something. Snore...

It ain't pretty. But they should be honest, since there are better mousetraps out there that can do both of these things instantly and cheaply.

General Discussion / Don't Always Trust the Experts
« on: April 07, 2015, 06:57:01 am »
Here are some memorable misses from notable authorities of their time. Thought you all might enjoy seeing these.

This telephone has too many shortcomings to be seriously considered as a practical form of communication. – Western Union internal memo, 1878.

Radio has no future. - Lord Kelvin, British mathematician and physicist, 1897.

[Television] won't be able to hold on to any market it captures after the first six months. People will soon get tired of staring at a plywood box every night. - Darryl Zanuck, head of 20th Century Fox, 1946.

Rail travel at high speed is not possible because passengers, unable to breathe, would die of asphyxia. - Dr. Dionysus Lardner, Professor of Natural Philosophy and Astronomy at University College, London, 1823.

Airplanes are interesting toys but of no military value. - Marshall Ferdinand Foch, French military strategist, 1911.

There is no reason for any individual to have a computer in their home. Kenneth Olsen, president and founder of Digital Equipment Corporation, 1977.

Here's some recent precedent. Yes, I know this is not a perfect comparison, but it's a damn good success story in a very short time frame. BitShares community, it can be done!
