From Altcoin Herald. This article only offers one idea: to pass Bitcoin, an altcoin needs to establish an independent value (so people don't trade it for BTC). It suggests several altcoins are making progress on this, but the article is pretty bland. I probably would add that BTSX/BitUSD provides some other features that Bitcoin lacks: (1) faster speed, (2) choice of keeping your money in an appreciating currency (BTSX) or in the market pegged currency (BitUSD), and (3) no mining inflation. In other words, if people give BitShares a try, they'll find that it out-Bitcoins Bitcoin.

If you agree want to mention what advantages you would be looking for in a better currency, then please consider helping out in this Reddit thread (I didn't start the fire, but I'm fanning the flames):

General Discussion / Coinbase's Toshi Node Needs More Currency Support
« on: September 24, 2014, 07:38:45 pm »
If (When?) Coinbase adds other cryptos, they may well use this Toshi.io thing that Charlie Lee works on. He recently posted that other currencies are easy to add as long as someone can do the work to plug them in and provide support. If we want BTSX and/or BitUSD to be among the first round of cryptos available on Coinbase (again, if and when that opportunity comes), it might be wise for someone to invest a little time on this. Not being a programmer, I have no idea how much work this would represent, but it could be one heck of a great opportunity.

A BitUSD on-ramp exchange. A cafeteria in the BitShares headquarters building (what? it's decentralized? no company cafeteria?). A marketing affiliate. An accounting firm with a specialty in cryptocurrencies. These may not be the best examples, but you get the point that they all have something in common: they could be independent businesses, and yet affiliated with BitShares or its community.

I know the BitShares team is working hard on many projects and these may well fit under the common umbrella. That's awesome. As this ecosystem grows, however, I am pretty sure that some side businesses will spring up. These may fill some niche that's too small for BitShares to involve itself in or they may simply be offering some non-DAC service to this community.

Here's a question and a suggestion. Even if these are non-DAC businesses, would it be possible for them to honor the Social Consensus, making a 20% PTS/AGS allocation? Basically, if someone came up with an easy way for them to do so (site or software program), could they make distributions available to those with keys to these PTS/AGS donor addresses? And I don't mean to water down the Social Consensus idea; maybe this application of it could have a different title.

IF this is possible, and if there ends up being a need for affiliated businesses, then I think this would be a natural way for the community to get behind a business/product (essentially, becoming a partner in it).

And I can't end this post without mentioning licensing opportunities. "Official Sports Drink of the NFL", "Official LASIK Eye Surgeon of Manchester United", etc. We need to keep our collective morals, which in the end are much more important than the bottom line. But a share-drop to this community could really be worth something as it grows. "Official provider of accounting services to the BitShares community". In turn, it could add some additional value to the Social Consensus, at least for those who haven't already moved to Tahiti by that point.

Understandably, no one wants to get into actual contracts for the Social Consensus. Perhaps there could be some insulating layer there. Even better, it could be entirely voluntary/non-binding, and "at will" (feel free to back out anytime, and see what the community thinks of you when you do).

Interested in others' thoughts on this.

General Discussion / Is Anyone Still Holding Bitcoin?
« on: September 10, 2014, 11:48:20 pm »
Question for the BitShares faithful: Is anyone still holding Bitcoin or other cryptos? Why? And if so, what percentage of your crypto assets are you holding outside of BitShares?

I sold all my junk coins for AGS and PTS. Since BTSX has come out, I realize that I've done what was once unthinkable: sold out (almost entirely) of Bitcoin. I just have nickels and dimes remaining in my BTC wallets at this point. So I would say that 99% of my crypto 'portfolio' is now in BTSX, a little BitUSD, and other BitShares commitments. Am I wrong to believe in this so strongly? I don't think so. Every dime I keep in Bitcoin is one dime that won't double, triple, or tentuple nearly as fast as it should in BitShares. Yes, there are risks, but as long as you are in crypto, risks are par for the course. I'm not interested in balancing or diversifying anymore; this is not money I need to eat or pay the mortgage. The (very realistically possible) potential rewards here vastly exceed anything else.

Nice article examining unusual upward price trend for BTSX. Not sure where the articles were moved to; feel free to move this to the right place on the forum.

I like this part:

"The chart shows a meteoric rise followed by a normal correction and then the beginning of an upward movement again. Another sign that BitsharesX is following a different trajectory than many other cryptocoin projects is the strong trading volume.
In the past 24 hours over $2.2 million USD worth of BTSX traded hands. That performance was second only to Bitcoin.
This strong performance could represent another pump and dump (albeit a sustained and strong one), or it may represent a divergence between BitsharesX and the rest of the altcoin market."

General Discussion / It would help to have some nude photos and a hacker...

It would help to have some nude celebrity photos and a hacker who hawks them for BitUSD. Google searches for Bitcoin are up 26%.

Edit: I'm kidding, not advocating any actual hackage or blackmail.

General Discussion / Good Morning, China!!!
« on: August 21, 2014, 12:13:54 am »
A big good morning to our friends from China and the rest of Asia. As you can see, the markets for BTSX have been busy whilst you have been asleep. Please, don't let us interrupt your breakfast. I just have a quick message to convey: Won't you please carry on where we left off?

It appears to be back on. Still not sure where the value comes from, but it will be an interesting project.
