Most people are different from me and the shows are excellent, but I'm more of a reader than a listener. I read the transcripts to see if I've missed anything useful that hasn't appeared on the forum. I speed read pretty quickly, and that's how I get most of my information. So yes, I would donate a little, but it's probably unlikely that you're going to get the kind of donations you're talking about in terms of these costs. The bigger question may be, is this transcripting sustainable? Hopefully, the poll will help.

I have no problem with his ideas of building out the infrastructure. More volume and revenue is a good thing for the system. Pretty soon, anyone can plug in a different wallet or browser, etc., once other apps follow, so you won't be reliant on that one if you don't like what he's doing. But I do hope that we soon get to a point where there is a core product that everyone feels is good enough to sell. And yes, I'm a bit sorry that we don't focus on getting that perfected before getting distracted with other things, but I think ("hope", because WTF do I know?) that progress is occurring on both fronts.

I'll have none of your semantics!  :o What I want is real answers to the questions I posed. We need to think about how to advertise this.

We've had newbie starter threads before where someone had to post and then got some free BTS, etc. Maybe if we advertised that somewhere on the website or in the wallet? Though I'd prefer no ads in the wallet.

I would buy a casino, and build my own ad  network... this way every advertising dollar I put out will come right back to me... each dollar can be spun several times through the ad network and then spun on the machines.

The other thing is aMUSEing as it is,  it need not to be rushed any where, before business model is somewhat defined.

Our product should be no different than a casino as far as its business potential. Basically, the reason to run an ad is if you believe your product/service is built well to make money. You advertise it to bring in people/users/customers (or, in the case of a casino, suckers) and that raises your revenue. My point is that if we believe in our product, every one of us should be advertising it. There are two reasons not to do so: (1) If we believe it's "not quite there yet", so we're waiting for something to change, or (2) If we lack proper incentives to buy such ads on our own dime.

I think this is an important analysis. If the answer is (1), then what are you waiting for? A few more GUI tweaks? If the answer is (2), then what could we do to share the cost of ads, to the point where it makes financial sense for us to spend money on advertising with the promise of making more from (a) referral income, (b) appreciation in the BitShares market cap price, or (c) a combination of both? Is the referral income inadequate for this?

If it makes more sense to split ads or have a cooperative get funded (UIA/IOU?) , run ads, and distribute the referral income, then let's think about doing this.

General Discussion / Re: Gold gateway
« on: December 03, 2015, 04:11:56 am »
I think what he did was terrible and inexcusable. However, and this is just my personal speculation, it may be very difficult to convict on criminal charges if no written contract was signed. I know the funds to buy the inventory were provided through crypto as well, making it that much harder to prove who (real world identity) received the funds.

Gentso was no dummy. I have no clue how long he was planning this, perhaps after the lack-luster response to cryptosmith which he and jsidhu worked hard to create, he could see it wasn't going anywhere and saw an opportunity to make off the gold with minimal risk. IMHO his intentions were (at least initially) to deliver a valuable service to the BitShares ecosystem. He was in contact with a lot of gold dealers, trying to wheel and deal a solid business out of this project. When that changed I can't really say.

I do recall asking him in June if Stan indicated any type of time limit on the funds or indicated he wanted to have the inventory returned. Gentso told me he pitched the deal as a long term proposition and there was no set timeframes, aside from the schedule to complete the development of the cryptosmith website, which the initial seed money funded.

Gentso and I talked quite regularly as that development was underway, and from my outside perspective that aspect of the project was managed well. In fact I believe the site was up and running ahead of schedule. He had nothing but praise for jsidhu.

He's probably here again under another name. On the marketing forum, he also had an idea about going to Asia to work on remittances. I seem to remember exchanging messages with him on both that idea and the gold gateway thing, trying to find out if he understood what the work would involve. Now I realize he probably wasn't serious about either one. The remittance idea was probably just another option to extract some funds from the community, so not sure if he actually went overseas or not.

There are a lot of bottom feeders in crypto, as we all know. The fact that it's the Wild West also enables tremendous opportunities, but to realize them we need to sort through the muck. Sometimes we get dirty in the process. There's no reason to become distrusting of other community members. Just be vigilant and skeptical, ask questions, be fairly sure what you're getting, and don't risk what you cannot afford to lose. This community is awesome. Together, we'll get there.

This is a big, big job, and I'm not convinced it's worth the trouble. I don't want to fund anyone to do what Gentso was planning. Selling precious metals from one's garage is a thankless headache of a job with low margins and plenty of risk. If we really want a gateway, then we find a partner who is already in the business of physical gold and silver, and knows how to make it work. That way, they have in place the storage, security, insurance, and shipping, so that someone doesn't have to create this business from scratch. Everyone who has tried a crypto e-gold type of thing has not gotten very far with it.

General Discussion / Re: Liquidity has a Price -> Adding Maker / Taker
« on: December 01, 2015, 10:23:56 pm »
I wasn't attempting to propose any particular solution, merely to point out that if you want a to encourage liquidity it must be paid for by someone.

Furthermore, I am contemplating a solution to this that doesn't involve dilution.  Think about sharing a cut of all future BitUSD fees with those who provide liquidity in that market early on.

The early participants to the market are the ones who give it life, the late comers don't benefit from the fees.  In other words, make BitUSD a "profit center" where the profits go to those who make it a successful business.

Again, we bribe people to do the dirty work. I'm all for it!  ;D

Muse/SoundDAC / Re: Can't claim MUSE?
« on: December 01, 2015, 09:25:34 pm »
I'm one of the lucky ones, since my import worked in the 1.0 version. But I wanted to try this anyway in 1.0.151101 with a different wallet, since I'm also running Windows 10. It crashed, just as others have reported. For the sake of those who have not had any success importing yet, I hope someone can address this for the next release. Thanks!

I tried this also with the newer version. Upon import, 1.0.151101 still crashes Windows 10.

I thought I was reading the NXT thread for a moment. You guys have exactly the same defense. Ouch.
Here's hoping BCL gets what he needs.

We just need to get the volume going and the money will move. I'd prefer to attract business with carrots rather than sticks. If we make a good platform that is cheaper and more honest, and perhaps if we can find some way to create a small yield, then we should not need to whip anyone to use the exchange. In the short term, I share your frustration.

Technical Support / Re: shorts and NOTEs missing after migration

The NOTEs do not show up in BitShares, I think, but if you had them in your wallet during the MUSE snapshot, then you can import those into your new MUSE wallet (NOTEs are now MUSE). Here is info on downloading and importing to the MUSE client. Good luck with it!

Take a look at this thread, please, where similar issues have been reported. The problem may be fixed by Wednesday.
