General Discussion / Re: Marketing Direction - Why not How or What...
« on: October 27, 2014, 06:49:06 am »
So lets not sell a product with features... lets let people know what we believe and stand for.   Lets let the world know that owning BitShares or buying BitUSD is about making a statement not making an investment.

Hummm.... an ideological approach to marketing is problematical because it invites regulatory opposition and controversy -- a terrible PR faux pas if your intention is to invite wide adoption. Ideological controversy will taint your wonderful software invention and make it a bogie man for people who hold ideological views that conflict with yours.

Bitshares should never be tainted by ideological color. Its utility should be DISCOVERED without bias. An ideological approach will shoot the "network effect" in the foot. It would be a self-inflicted wound.

Don't do it.

General Discussion / Re: Longtime Investor - I am out

Hey Peter,

thanks for sharing your thoughts instead of just leaving.
From your post I read that your concern is mostly investment related and you are invested in BTSX and AGS, right?
So I guess your concern is not about the paradigm shift but more on the financial side.

It's become abundantly clear with their recent decision that I3 is only looking out for their own interests at the expense of their investors/supporters.

I my point of view the disjunct set of investors' and I3's interests just became very small. They want BTS to succeed as much as you do.
Yeah, I3 switches gears and paradigms a lot. But in most cases they have a very good reason for that.
(E.g. not being able to liquidate funds to fund devs and operations, facing the problem that the available workforce is somehow starting to compete, ...)
And if they screw up, they'll fix it. Just have a look at toast, who put in enormous effort to make the people whole that lost the most due to the merger.

But I also shared a big concern of yours:
As an investor it was very blurry in what you really were investing when buying e.g. BTSX or DNS. Who was behind a DAC? What was I3 really committed to?
I my point of view this kept investors pretty much in the uncertain and may even hindered some from investing.
Actually, that 'flaw' is gone now.  Was the (still ongoing) transition handled nicely? I guess we all know the answer to that.
But the outcome is actually pretty good. I3 now has a clear focus and commitment. After the dust settles it should make you much more comfortable than before.
I also do not like the vesting of my funds but when looking at the bigger picture this merge is by far the best way to go.
Especially if you hold a big position in BTSX the recent events put you in a much better position.
If you disagree, I would be curious why.

I'd like to apologize for some reactions if your post was a genuine one. The post just checked a couple boxes which provokes this kind of reactions.

Bobb,

The reason for my decision is as follows:

- I3 has repeatedly shown that they are unwilling to commit to a singular course of action.
- I3 unilaterally makes decisions, ones which greatly affect shareholder value, without consulting investors.
- I3 shows no regard in honoring the commitments which initially enticed investment.

I3's intentions are at best ambiguous and the ease in which they are willing to compromise shareholder value is unsettling.  Even if you aren't currently affected by their recent decision, what leads you to believe that in the future your investment won't be subjected to a form of infringement at their hands?

One of my tenets of investing is "When in doubt, get out."

Peter

This is getting tiresome.

I address this response to any inexperienced investor hoping to keep their crypto: Anonymous Pete is an amateur actor playing the part of Peter Lynch, a real-life investor and certified old-wealthy-white-guy: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Lynch

Anonymous Pete is engaging in a game of words, posting on an open forum for an ulterior motive: he is hoping to instill a quick panic in  the heart of some drunk, high and/or paranoid 19-year-old crypto investor who may be out there at this very moment.

You see, Anonymous Pete is actually a BTSX speculator. But he's come late to the party. And he wants his share, so to speak. So Anonymous Pete has calculated that there may be a few lucky guys out there who bought BTSX early and may have spent some of their profits on mind altering substances. He's shaking the tree a bit in hopes a few panicked apples may fall out.

If they sell, Anonymous Pete will buy.

For Anonymous Pete, it's all about being in the right place at the right time! A shot in the dark, you might say.

In that sense, Anonymous Pete is using the forum as a means of free advertising. That makes the O.P a kind of self-service ad for a profit-making enterprise.

I've posted on this forum under a pseudonym before.  I feel it is necessary to share my opinion with others regarding the recent events.

I've been a longtime investor and believer in Bitshares.  I was following I3 before Protoshares was released.  I stayed up late and mined PTS from day one.  I bought AGS and BTSX.  I too wanted to see BTSX succeed.

Throughout the past couple of months, I've seen things which have made me uneasy about I3 and their intentions towards investors, but I kept quiet, hoping I was wrong.  It's become abundantly clear with their recent decision that I3 is only looking out for their own interests at the expense of their investors/supporters.  This is unfortunate.  I believed their word and took the social contract at face value.  I thought they were honest and trustworthy and under this logic advised others to invest in BTSX.  I cannot sit by any longer and support what I believe is simply a long con on investors.

To this end, I have accumulated a large position in PTS/AGS/BTSX which I will be liquidating.  I will attempt to do this slowly as to not erode my wealth and others.  I wish this community all the best and I do hope you are successful in your goals.  I initially got interested in Bitshares because I thought it was going to be the next Bitcoin.  I do not believe this anymore.  I have studied crypto extensively and come to the conclusion that NXT has the biggest chance of becoming the next Bitcoin.  This is where I will be allocating my capital.

If yes, then I don't know... Did you move the funds around? Did you vote? If you just left them in your AGS private keys without moving them, I don't know the answer to your question... Anybody else?

I suppose (!) that if you only imported the keys into your wallet this will not have been noticed by the blockchain, IOW the genesis transactions are still sitting in the genesis blocks. If, however, you "moved them around" by voting or otherwise sending them to a different address they will definitely have been moved from the genesis block. Lucky me. Hopefully.

I must say, this is indeed a *very* clever move by bm. The people who are most loudly complaining about his proposal are also the most likely to have touched their genesis stake. So this proposed "fix" is very well targeted.

The only people we need to make whole are those who bought in after launch. Those are necessarily shares that moved.

I guess it's a moot question. But for the record, I CLAIMED the DNS. I did not move them from my KeyID wallet.

Query:

I claimed my AGS allocation via my KEYID wallet. I have something over a million DNS.  Help me out here. Are my DNS still on the genesis block or did I move them to my wallet when I claimed them? Just trying to understand if claiming my DNS yesterday effected my allocation today.

Yep.. we are moving toward much more controlled PR.... but unfortunately that means my posting around here will have to stop (or be greatly reduced) and things will have to move slower.

Perhaps that post was an example of bad PR...  we haven't identified the balance... but I hope to remain accessible and transparent because that is what people expect.

ByteMaster-- Maybe you could have a personal proxy for things like your "The Vote DAC just got more interesting" O.P.

If your goal is to keep access to the mindshare of the crowd, maybe you could figure out a way to decouple your identity from your participation in the forum. So you might first write the equivalent of "The Vote DAC just got more interesting" O.P., then send it to Toast for review. The developers can have an internal discussion, and then Toast posts BM's original idea but it's been retread and its source camouflaged through a new identity. Then you could get the community feedback, but no one would guess it was the CEO making a bold new proposal.

If only you can do this article in the first place to laid down all the facts and let people to digest before you make the proposal......
If only you can communicate with other devs first....

 :'(

Bad management and business and PR part,I'll say.

It does not had to happened.

Yep.. we are moving toward much more controlled PR.... but unfortunately that means my posting around here will have to stop (or be greatly reduced) and things will have to move slower.

If that helps with the development and public image, and that's what it takes, that should be it.
That kind of stuff should be handled in a more professional way. That's what a 50 million company should do.

You can post a thousand news without compromising the PR image. You can post about "how fast I've made the DPOS","what kind of function I want to add on the menu",that's cool, man. But something that's related to the business itself, you should not tread lightly.

The world is changing,BTS is changing, you need to adapt as well.

If BM stops posting, then he will no longer have the advantage of crowd intelligence, and will instead have to rely upon insular "developers" to find consensus. Seems like that would increase the time BM needs to make decisions, and decrease the quality of the feedback on which the decision is made.

If BM does not stop posting... then investors and speculators will have to get used to the up and downs of this new business.

We need a solution that maintains Dan's access to the forum's brain bank without spooking the market.

Thanks!

I just opened my BTSX wallet and tried to import the PTS dat file, but btsx import function requires a json file, and does not recognize the dat file.

I already claimed my BTSX balance back in July using my PTS wallet address, but now I wonder if I missed something by not importing the PTS wallet itself.

Can BTSX wallet import my PTS dat file backup?

Could you tell me how to find the list of all change addresses in my PTS wallet. Is there a way to import them all at once?

Thanks

Thanks PC and Bombastic

I was confused by the Change Address.

Is there a way to get the AGS explorer to merge the change addresses from my wallet and give a sum total of all my AGS and share distribution?

I have uncovered a problem with the AGS explorer allocation. Some of my AGS donations are not accounted for.

Here is my PTS wallet output:
http://www1.agsexplorer.com/balances/PiunA5mHJkWYKRcyjT2jVwAefRQqD4NwGf?view=merged

It shows that I have 94 AGS. The AGS explorer has shown 94 AGS since the summer. Back in June I thought it was a glitch that would eventually fix itself. So haven't bothered to check it over the past few months.

The problem is that I actually have 1071.27184719 AGS in my wallet.

getagsbalance returns 1071.27184719

I have an export of my PTS wallet showing the dates and amounts of my AGS donations:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BxUIqKk5A76DLVduX2JYWERjTFU/view?usp=sharing

The donation dates and amounts recorded in my wallet are not reflected in the AGS explorer link above.

I discovered the problem today when I downloaded the Key ID and imported my PTS wallet in preparation for the Nov 5 merger.  I received about 94,000 DNS in my Key ID account.

But I actually have over a thousand AGS, so shouldn't I have something over a million DNS?

Seems like a problem.

Open the the OGG file with the VLC player. It works great.

General Discussion / Re: Should we continue to funding mining of PTS?
« on: October 17, 2014, 06:54:26 pm »
Future DACs should honor PTS for helping bootstrap this community and fund development of the toolkit... but should we continue to dilute PTS holders just to fund mining?

Based upon designs for future DACs that we have, there is no need to have PTS be liquid.

What if we simply shut down PTS after one last snapshot for all eternity for any and all future DACs after which it becomes an empty token with the value of all the other alt coins?

I think it would be much cleaner to simply end PTS... have DACS launch their own proto-dac like Toast did or even BTSX did.

Why do this?  It simplifies our marketing message... no need to advertize/support PTS after the last snapshot.

Those who want liquidity could sell prior to the last snapshot and buy into individual proto-dacs when the time comes.

This will also create one genesis block initial balance template for all DACs and remove the need to support the genesis block generators for arbitrary dates.

We are coming up on November 5th, 1 year from the launch of PTS so I would like to propose that November 5th be the last snap shot day for all time after which we would dump all of our PTS on the market to who ever wants to speculate.    I suspect that the price fall on PTS after this date would stop mining in its tracks anyway..

Mining is costing our community over $5000 per day right now and over $1 million over the next year.... assuming block times will "average" 5 minutes.  We should certainly end mining prior to the next difficulty adjustment... because with what we are paying for mining on PTS we could hire many developers.

Just a proposal...

I concur.  +5%

PTS is no longer useful, and is positively wasteful at this point.
