Likewise, BitShares is an Asset Exchange Network.

Actually BitShares is quite similar to Ethereum but without the (probably unmanageable) overhead of a "Turing-complete"  programming language. Thus, it can be seen to be similar to Java (offering a subset of C/C++) when Ethereum is considered C/C++ (or such). Here the benefit is that the subset is handable and verifyable (.... more robust and safer), and much easier to work with :D

General question (since I could not find this elsewhere):

Is there a genuine place from where I can download "an up-to-date" BitShares blockchain? Setting up a new client is easy, but syncing it takes long and sometimes does not work such that the whole process needs to be repeated again and again (my slow little pc, c847/8gb, often has problems here and it takes days to re-sync/re-download the chain)... As such, it would be awesome to have an official and always "up-to-date" download link for the BitShares blockchain.

That said, my question is if such a download link is already there (and I could not find it), or would it be a great addition to the BitShare's homepage?

EDIT: Also 8gb ram seem sometimes not enough for a re-sync (using v0.9.2)... is that true? Did some one else make similar experiences?
I don't know if there is a download link for the blockchain.
8GB RAM is more than enough. If you're using Windows or Linux, try run  'bitshares_client' rather than GUI for initial syncing. After in-sync you can press ctrl+d to close it then open GUI.
Wish you good luck.

Thanks :-) It turned out that 8gb are not enough (using the Win7 v0.9.2 GUI-client) when syncing from scratch. So, I downloaded a blockchain found on the web (1.6gb compressed; July 2015). Using that "bootstrap", things worked flawlessly, consuming 4gb ram at max.

I'd do it, but the period seems over, right?

EDIT: Sig updated.

General (maybe stupid) question: Would it make sense to increase the number of delegates (etc) to more than 101 ? Why not use 10000 of them? Wouldn't that change the odds of having trouble in the network?

..just listened to the latest hangout session (excellent way of communicating btw!):

Regarding the delegates' need of high bandwidth, why don't we ask universities to host delegates? This has quite successfully be done with IRC servers some time/decades ago, and might just work the same way with BTS delegates. Universities commonly have almost unlimited bandwidth and other capacities, and anyway may have some intrinsic/academic interest in the BTS network (collecting [big]data, storing prices, order books, etc). So, I suggest, we ask ~25 universities across the world each to host a single BTS delegate/server. In contrast to IRC, the hosting universities would even be paid for their support! How cool is that?! Also, that could turn out to be a very nice "marketing gag".

I did not do too much but made the (successful) effort to add Bitshares to http://mapofcoins.com/technologies

Technical Support / Re: Who is Cryptonomex?

Don't forget this document, by the Euro Banking Association, here:

https://www.abe-eba.eu/downloads/knowledge-and-research/EBA_20150511_EBA_Cryptotechnologies_a_major_IT_innovation_v1.0.pdf

BitShares is not mentioned but Ripple and friends as "asset-centric technologies". So, I'm wondering what BitShares would be..

In that regard, is CNX also concerned with compliance issues and lobbying, or "just" offering blockchain technology?

Fully agreed. CNX  +5%

I would like to see the calculation of what has been made/done with the AGS/PTS funding and what with delegate funding, etc. In my opinion, if Graphene was built with AGS/PTS funding, then it has to be open source without any restrictions (well, at least the portion of code that was funded that way). I'm pretty sure CNX will do exactly that as anything else would be a hit on their reputation (any maybe a legal problem). Anyway, the business plan of CNX is logical from any perspective, and I would probably not do things differently.

Don't forget BitShares is such a tasty piece of software, because it is decentralized (in every way) ;-)

BitShares may use the code we release for 2.0 without restrictions
BitShares may develop extra features and use them without restriction

Very good, thanks for the clarification!
+5%

I believe the whole new, upcoming setting now is just AWESOME +10 and extremely well planned.

As far as I can tell from history it is highly important to have an industry-scale support at hand; just like CNX. That is also the only reason why Ripple still exists. CNX is committed to BitShares, and they love it.

Recall further that CNX is only one of the parents of BitShares, the AGS/PTS community is the other of course. We all know that two supporting, caring and patient parents are the very best for the successful development of any child. I'm going to support CNX by heart and hope you too! They have shown capable of the job and do have all the knowledge! What else could we (the BitShares community) dream of? Right, a CNX-like competitor, hehe.

Just remember: competition is the natural engine of any great economy. This is how it starts and works, NOW :-)

Looking forward to see bts2.0 flying.

Side question: What was the date of the initial Bitshares launch?

Btw, http://wiki.bitshares.org/ is OFFLINE.

Would is be possible to include a subpage on bitshares.com that summarizes network stats like https://stats.ethdev.com? Don't get me wrong, http://bitsharesblocks.com is doing a great job, but just not presenting informations as sound and eye-catchy as https://stats.ethdev.com does it. Just an idea.

I have a quick question regarding client and GUI:

I saw (https://github.com/BitShares/bitshares/releases) that only for Linux there are separated programs, i.e., client (daemon?) and GUI. Why is this not the case for MacOS and Windows? I would love to run a "headless" client on Windows - given that the official GUI is still a bit buggy.

That way, people could start writing GUIs independently, or start integrating Bitshares into their applications. I'd love to see that possibility. Any chances on this on systems other than Linux any soon?
