Stakeholder Proposals / Re: Legal Council about BTS and No-action
« on: March 08, 2018, 09:47:57 am »
I've read a number of these press releases by the Foundation, and the English language usage is so poor that it is almost impossible to understand what is being said.  It makes the Foundation look very unprofessional.  I'm not sure if it has always been the same author, but I've read three or four of these releases and each time my reading comprehension suffers greatly because of the poor command of the English language used by the author.  Please invest in a native English speaker to write the press releases!

General Discussion / Re: "Create Backup Now" button not working

announced on github and the usual news outlets.

Great! Then it's easy to create a link to one of the announcements and place it at www.bitshares.org/wallet to make the request to move to a new address more legitimate.

In any case, the button to create a backup on that page doesn't work, which is the real problem. It appears clickable but then doesn't do anything when clicked.

General Discussion / "Create Backup Now" button not working

The web-wallet migration to https://wallet.bitshares.org appears scammy.  I suggest a link be added where discussion of this change or announcement of the change took place with trusted community members participating in the discussion.  It feels strange, having not logged into the wallet for a couple of weeks, to navigate to the familiar address and be requested to upload a backup with password to another website.

That said, the landing page has a button to create a backup which does not work.  Clicking on it does not create a backup .bin file.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

But looking at the current smartcoins market cap I guess I'm not the only one willing to take that risk.

IMO a very low smartcoin market cap would be indicative of BTS bullishness.  (Everyone would sell their smartcoins for BTS and when no more buyers remained, smartcoin holders would force settle to be holding BTS on the way up.)

Is this what you mean?  Is there a low smartcoin market cap right now?  bitUSD is at 5,618,042 right now, but I don't know if that is low compared to other times.

General Discussion / Re: Blockchain Explorer

There's block explorer integrated into the wallet.

In your account, go to the cog or gear type icon in the upper right hand corner and choose Explore.

General Discussion / Re: Dan's Next Project - EOS Rears its Head

The token distribution schedule is available now at eos.io

There is a large section in the instructions about mapping a public key to a Buyer's account:

7.12. Failure to Map a Public Key to Buyer’s Account. Failure of Buyer to map a public key to Buyer’s account may result in third parties being unable to recognize Buyer’s EOS Token balance on the Ethereum blockchain when and if they configure the initial balances of a new blockchain based upon the EOS.IO Software of which Company makes no representation or guarantee.

Then later the same problem (I think) is addressed as registering a public key for your Ethereum account:

Failing register a public key for your Ethereum account
If you hold EOS Tokens in an Ethereum account and fail to register a public key or lose the private key that maps to your registered public key, then your EOS Tokens will not be part of the snapshot when the EOS Tokens become fixed and non-transferable on the Ethereum blockchain. If and when someone launches a blockchain adopting the EOS.IO Software there may be less than 1 billion EOS Tokens outstanding after taking into account those who fail to register a public key.

I've never used the ethereum blockchain.  Can anyone explain how this registration/mapping works in ethereum and what steps need to be taken other than simply donating to the smart contract address from an address where you hold the private key?

Here is the correct answer if you believe in math:

All of them

Never put all your eggs into 1 basket is more than just an ancient parable, but a math equation based on the probablity of every one of your eggs getting simultaneously (in this lifetime) stolen.

Good to see Stan back in incognito mode.

Is there any other way to access the chain other than building the client from source? Are there any binaries available or is anyone hosting a web wallet?

alternatively, since you already did the migration from 1.0 to 2.0 at some point, you might be able to simply enter your private key under Restore/Import.

This should work if you only had one account and you have the private key for that account. If you had multiple accounts in your 2.0 desktop wallet I don't think it will work. Or in other words, you would only get one account back.

I just checked and the proper place to do the import under settings is "Restore/Import"

But there doesn't seem to be the option to import a .json file from a BitShares 2.0 Client. Are you sure you have a .json file?
Under the same settings menu there is the option "Backup" and this gives you the .bin file which you were wondering about. Do you have a .bin file backup from your desktop client? Is the interface of the desktop client similar to that of the web wallet? If so, you can make a .bin backup there. Or if you already have one, you can import this into the web wallet.

Yes, you will have to make a new account for the web-wallet. Use this link to access the web wallet:

https://bitshares.org/wallet/

Openledger works I think but it might be something different now.

Once you have made a new account you go to settings which is in a menu at the upper right, next to your user name.
In settings you can select import keys and import your json file there.  At that point you will be asked for your password and you insert the password for your desktop client where you exported the keys.

If everything is successful you will have your old account restored in the webwallet.  You will have two accounts in the wallet.  The one you created to access the webwallet, and the one you restored from your desktop client

Yes that's correct.

It's complicated. And it depends on your situation.

It sounds like you have remembered your password which means you should be able to use the json file you have and import it into the web-wallet to restore your account.

You can try that.

But don't delete the desktop client you have now!

Yes, the network is up and running fine.  You might need to update your client.

I don't have too much experience with the desktop client, but you might want to make sure you have the most recent version.

https://github.com/bitshares/bitshares-ui

Perhaps the nodes hardcoded in your version for connecting to the network have changed if you have an older version?
