You're in luck!  v.0.6.1 is already out:

Hopefully the fact that our competitors are still pursuing POW (and proprietary, at that) gives us time to clean up our ui and get marketing caught up.

We only have one competitor, ethereum.

And they're not dicking around.

This is most certainly an ethereum thing.  They've long had plans to start out with a proprietary hardware POW solution, then possibly shift into POS later.

Another way (if you feel comfortable using the console):

If you open the json file with a text editor you should be able to find the private key for that wallet.
It will look something like this, starting with a 5:

5JqiLmyjqFLZijGMfh3RmEDFgMgMFZZU3Q87qHbgxLNVkk7n1b9

!!Don't give that key out to anyone or post it anywhere because your funds can be stollen!!

Then, using the console you can import the key using wallet_import_private_key.
Read about the exact syntax first, using the console like this: help wallet_import_private_key
You may have to rescan the blockchain afterwards.

Otherwise wait for the next release as vikram suggests.

Private keys in the JSON backups are encrypted and still require the password.

Ok, thanks for the correction.  Forget everything I suggested stupid_american!

Check out the wiki as well

Under the "Bitshares Exchange and Economics" section some of your questions might be addressed.

If you really were successful in deleting the old wallet you would have been required to make a brand new account name and password when you installed v0.6.0.  Was that the case?  If so, I assume the passphrase it wants is the "password" from the old wallet.

If you weren't asked to create new login details from scratch when installing v.0.6.0, it means you didn't get rid of the old wallet completely and the problem is probably that it is not possible to import a wallet into itself, and the information about your funds is within the stuff you threw away.  In any case: DON'T EMPTY THE TRASH!

But it should be fine.  If you have the json file you are good.

General Discussion / Re: Enhancing Bitshares' Security
« on: January 17, 2015, 01:03:25 pm »
I was thinking of a much smaller incentive.  Something like 5% asset yields instead of a default 4% (as a hypothetical scenario) for those who leave their client connected to the network.  If these clients were allowed to sign blocks in the case of an attack, it would provide redundancy.  The network design would be more robust.

General Discussion / Enhancing Bitshares' Security
« on: January 16, 2015, 08:37:30 pm »
Could a mechanism be put in place which temporarily transfers blocksigning power to additional clients on the network in the case of a coordinated attack against the delegates?  Could these additional clients be somehow incentivized to participate?

This would enhance the security of the Bitshares' network and improve upon what Stan calls "sufficiently decentralized".

This is the correct way to think!  +5%  New businesses which are understandable with independent UIs.

Something like a simple savings and checking account offering 5% and nothing else (no trading, basket currencies, blah blah blah) would be extremely popular.  Most people don't have, or are even interested in, access to markets for example.

Forget marketing Bitshares!  Bitshares is the backend!  At least long term this is the only way it will ever be digestible to a wider public.

Technical Support / Re: Bitshares application won't start on Mac
« on: January 12, 2015, 01:21:40 pm »
I am a newby, but very old and therefore very stupid.
I am trying to initiate and register a bitshares account.
I have downloaded the latest BitShares  (dmg) release (from GitHub) to my mac and placed it in in applications.
When I go to start it a small window comes up to tell me that it "quit unexpectedly" Have done this repeatedly.
A report comes up with some code that is waaaay beyond my addled brain.
Can someone help?

This may depend on the version of your operating system.  In my experience, versions of OSX 10.6.8 and earlier are not compatible.

I really think a web wallet should be incorporated into svk's www.bitsharesblocks.com.  It is becoming such a feature rich site as many are currently admiring here:

https://bitsharestalk.org/index.php?topic=13126.0

If that happened, the site would become something very similar to blockchain.info which has been extremely successful.

svk is obviously an extremely talented web developer.  He has probably thought of this idea independently already.

Though it would mean a whole different set of responsibilities, maybe we can encourage him to take this step.

General Discussion / Re: 240,000 BTS in fees collected January 5th?
« on: January 08, 2015, 08:39:46 pm »
If you start from the first blocks you'll see how the fees for asset registration quickly increased then decreased in the beginning when the fees depended on the time since the last asset had been created. (at least I think that's how it worked)

What do they depend on now?
