"He who controls the Spice, controls the Universe"

Ripple may be an interesting and innovative project, however, the nodes that process the transactions have zero democratic oversight as I understand it.  Ripple is surely central banking 2.0.  Which is why it has garnered support from certain financial institutions.  Ripple seems to me to be our ancient adversary in a new guise, not simply our competition.

Hope you don't mind, stole "central banking 2.0" for related reddit post:

"Bitshares is decentralized Ripple" is a message that we need to promote, imo.
Credit for this idea goes to Toast.

Ripple is the hot thing right now, but bitcoiners hate it because it helps the same old centralized banking system to succeed.

This is the message that we could use to win over some bitcoin folks.

(I even think it is true, or I should say, will be true once all the bitshares features are implemented!)

This is almost exactly correct (from a technological perspective).  There is some centralization, but that centralization is good for adaptability. It would be closer to say that it has all the benefits of Ripple, but gives the power to the shareholders.

Terrible marketing. Do you realize that casual users really dislike the distribution of XRP? The last thing you need is to associate Bitshares with Ripple. I cringed when I read that quote from a newbie perspective.

I think there is some unwritten marketing rule which says you should never mention your competitors in a marketing statement as it inadvertently advertises them instead of you.
My opinions do not represent those of metaexchange unless explicitly stated.

This message is quite a statement.
I would prefer Dan's view on whether this comparison is helpful or somehow could backfire?
