I've been seeing visions and prototypes of these things for years, though, maybe decades. Has anyone ever taken a concrete step toward building a floating city on the water? Forgive my cynicism, but seems about as likely to happen as some of those concept cars at auto shows. Or the ridiculous concept outfits some models wear on the runway in Paris or Milan.

ha! you'd be naive not to be skeptical. i work with the foundation and i'm skeptical. the tech is there to make this happen, just a matter of corralling sufficient demand to capitalize. Peter Thiel has been our top supporter so far, which is nice validation for the concept.

but no, not even a prototype has been launched yet. this year we had some component design testing, but it has thus far been road show marketing, some grants for research; nonetheless, we'll get there. optimistic projections say we'll see the first startup city by 2020.

i've long thought that the age of crypto would naturally propel the age of seasteading.
I don't see this link .. yet ..
Unless you establish an independent government in this city/community!

that's the point :)

Seasteading is first looking to establish a prototype in some existing political jurisdiction, but the longer term goal is to make these independent entities...crypto solves the currency issue quite well and also offers an entirely new economy for which these new entities can become safe havens.

Could just as well do this.

http://www.seasteading.org/

i'm a Seasteading ambassador...highly recommend the group. i know they're pro BTC, and i imagine they're going to be very pro BTS once we get 2.0 launched. i'd be happy to start speaking to leadership there about BTS, but def prefer waiting until 2.0 is a go.

Wow .. didn't know people are actually building this:

that's the vision, at least. still a long way to go from here to there, but the need for jurisdictional diversification and a fresh start seems like a no-brainer. i've long thought that the age of crypto would naturally propel the age of seasteading.

Well I got some news on Liberland:

http://www.businessinsider.com/libertarians-liberland-power-politics-2015-7?IR=T

I know they haven't been able to get into Lalaland, but realistically, their thing probably doesn't depend that much on the land itself. The cost of physically starting a country from scratch would be prohibitive. This way, they can claim the land is rightfully theirs and form their government in absentia. There are plenty of precendents for governments that have been deposed from their native lands and fled elsewhere, continuing to function and represent the country and people from abroad. Their thing is all about the principle, so being there shouldn't really matter as long as they can claim rhetorically that it's rightfully theirs.

All he said was that they've talked. It was more news than announcement.

Huh?  Where is our update that we were told to get last week?

It's one of those potential partnerships that could be good PR or could go absolutely nowhere. You can call him on the date if you want, but that usually isn't how these things work. I'd prefer to just let things unfold naturally and see what happens (if anything).

Its a non-news event.  PR is useful when you have an audience to bring their eyes towards something.  There is nothing to show.

Additionally, you didn't answer the previous question.  Why would you announce this and then reneg on it and possibility risk damaging credibility.  This is not how world-class organizations act.
