I'm still using win7 (I'm a gamer) - but hopefully the last windows operation system ever for me. Unfortunately, Linux (and GPU companies)  is still not making steps needed to guarantee a decent gaming  OS

Hopefully you don't get backdoored by MS like I did with KB3035583. I made the mistake of thinking if I clicked the icon I could of course, exit/cancel/go back ... NOPE!  Instead MS installed what basically amounts to malware on my box and I had to go through a few hours of removing updates to halfway get my Win7 back like it was without them monitoring (as much). It's not just that update, they sneak it in with several updates, but once they are in place it's a bitch to get rid of.

oh really? btw, this "want to upgrade to win 10" is annyoing as hell... what do I have to uninstall / block in order to get rid of this malware?

It varies, but if you remove all of the above updates, then hide them, it "should" go away. However, you may still have the beg to uprade in "Windows Update". That I've yet to figure out and I'm not alone. Just be sure to read what each one allegedly does first of course and use your best judgement. The main ones are KB3035583, 3075249, 3044374, 2990214 and you may or may not have all of them.

thanks. found something similar http://microsoft-news.com/how-to-remove-windows-10-upgrade-notification-on-windows-7-and-windows-8/

Offline bulletproof

Agree 100% with the sentiment here and personally I get nearer to moving to Linux each time Apple 'upgrade' their OS (peaked at 10.6.8 IMHO) - I declined Yosemite too. However, OS X with (free/open source) tools like homebrew & cask is still tough to beat for dev'ing in my view and I like an encrypted hard drive, which makes dual-boot hard (impossible?), so I'm stuck with everything else in VM's.

Graphene is developed using OS X and I found it much easier to build on OS X than Ubuntu - but then maybe I need to investigate linuxbrew..

Am aiming to write a brew formula for graphene as soon as 1st stable build come out  :)
Everything is awesome, or if it isn't it ought to be.

What operating system do you prefer to run your browser and wallet on?

IMO it is this one (or derivative works).. Far from perfect, but it really is a necessity.  Ubuntu seems to be the path of least resistance and keeps the core principals intact.   I think any average awake individual will have to come to some sort of conclusion like this especially when they see their freedom and rights just slipping away due to corporate greed taking advantage of lazy people just looking for a easy fix.  I intend to keep my privacy and freedom even if takes up some of my time to learn how to use it...  Ultimately I became a console "power" user and I'm glad, I am confident this investment will pay off for the rest of my life and perhaps even then some.

http://www.ubuntu.com/about/about-ubuntu/our-philosophy

Ok, so you don't need to be a console power user..  But you know how to type.  The console is full of great ideas... nothing to run from...  At least with Ubuntu you can defer using it when necessary until you have the time and mindset to learn it...   Let me know if I can help.  I think we will be safer here in terms of security and privacy.

Is this question simply targeting on  the philosophy of OSes or do you draw conclusion for the development process from this thread? Is it of Importance on which OS the wallet is run?

Thanks and Regards,

Matthias

It has a lot to do with a program running on a local machine and being available to trust it.   The important thing is that you don't have lurking bugs or intentional back-doors.  These can surface later when more people are relying on the software.  Terms of service can't protect from this or may allow it entirely.  With some new agreements is just puts is in plan open ended english: we can upload your personal information legally.

If you protect the layer closest to you you have a lot more to work with when it comes to interacting with remote services.  We all know there are tricks that can be done to make these more trustless.  This only works if your brain is capable of intense computational power or if you have a device that you can trust to do this.  Stuff on my radar are: cars, phones, personal computers and in the future personal robotics (you have seen iRobot right?) ..

It is very hard to audit the insides of a compiled program you can mostly observe it.  Observing encrypted data that leaves your machine on a regular basis is equally difficult.  The more popular or valuable a piece of software the more of a target it is...  Software updates have been uploading data and suspected of uploading operating system file searches without the user's consent for many years.  I expect that activity not covered by terms of service is wide-spread.  If you can't audit it their is no other rational way to look at it: Guilty until proven innocent.

What would also help is if the public demands it.  No good gaming platforms?  I say put get a group effort going.  Put the pressure on hardware and software creators to fix it.  One individual's rants are likely a wast of time.  But a large group can really make a difference in a hurry.  Coordinate with in-expensive block-chain voting.  In the mean time, run games on a dedicated machine but be aware that the machine may have eyes and ears (at least it does not have legs ...).

(it apparently logs your every keystroke and sends it to Microsoft)

Do you have checked on your own or do you have a reliable source? I looked it up and couldn't find a reliable source but in contrary tech articles which say that this statement was made by some person doing some interpretation of EULAs, no evidence yet that they really collect data on this scale. (We all know what's possible technically, but this is not the question).

Windows 10 appears to be about the worst invasion of privacy you could possibly install on a computer
(it apparently logs your every keystroke and sends it to Microsoft)
(also checks your computer for any pirated software and reports that to them also)
my advice would be to either use Linux or stick to Windows 7

Wise words!

I am on ArchLinux and came from Gentoo (yhea, compiled ALL my stuff including bootstrapping a compiler ... takes 4 days to install your OS :) )

I've been running Ubuntu ever since I realized somebody dumbed Linux down to my level. Can't believe it's been 11 years.

It took some tweaking at first, but I learned from it. I haven't really ever looked back. I dual-booted for a while for Civ IV until I was able to get it running on wine. Comfortable with a command line, but barely. I'd have to look up the commands Thom gave as an example to follow what they do.

Xubuntu is my flavor of choice.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ This. I have no reason to use Windows except for gaming or Windows development.

What is the context of the question? The answer is always "Yes! at some point". I have installed Windows 10 as a VM on my MacBook pro to evaluate it to serve my customers, but I do not find it compelling enough to upgrade from Windows 7. I never cared much for Windows 8/8.1.

I run multiple operating systems on a multitude of hardware. All of my primary systems have quad core CPUs. 2 have 8GB of memory.

I have serious reservations about upgrading to Apple's Yosemite or Microsoft's Windows 10. Both are offered as a free upgrade, which is unprecedented in the history of products those companies have produced. It has me asking why? Given that both of those companies have a track record of including spyware in their OS, I wonder if their free distribution is related to that or offered as a measure of countering the ever increasing install base of Linux operating systems.

I live in a very low populated rural area, and even here I see the use of Linux spreading (which I help to do, but I'm surprisingly not the only one). With only 10K people in the entire county, I know of at least 7 people that only run Ubuntu. That may not seem like many but given how many STILL run Windows XP on hardware > 10 years old to read email or look at facebook as their primary use of the computer, it is actually significant.

I boot Windows 7 on the system that runs my home theater in my living room, but it also can multi-boot Open SuSE, Mythbuntu, Mint, and even Windows XP. I can also run several versions of Linux under VirtualBox. I use this system running Windows 7 with Dragon Naturally Speaking to write The BitShares Saga and produce graphics with either PhotoShop, PaintShop Pro or Gimp.

My MacBook Pro uses OS X 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard) and uses Parallels to run an identical copy of the Windows 7 on my home theater system, as a backup. The Mac also has various flavors of Linux VMs that run under Parallels.

Until I started working on graphene I was primarily running Xbuntu on my Dell quad core. It only has 4GB of RAM currently, but will dual boot Xbuntu or Debian. I recently upgraded the Debian OS to 8.1 from the early beta release of Jessie, version 8.0. The GUI, being based on Gnome 3 is definitely more resource hungry than Xbuntu, but my delegate partner wackou prefers Debian and thus I thought it might be a good idea to work with that OS a bit more regularly so it has become the primary OS  choice on that platform.

I wouldn't call myself a command line power user (unless you think find . | grep LO* | xargs rm qualifies as a power user example) but I'm quite comfortable with the shell. You better get comfy with the command line  if you want to deploy on a VPS server! It also helps to keep your memory sharp!

A long-winded answer, but there you have it.

Xubuntu is my flavor of choice.  I still need to find a good distro for Intel based touch screen devices.
