if you imported your 1.0 wallet you need the .bin - every new registration / name is covered in the brain key
Confirmed ..

Later when we have the private mode, the brainkey will NOT cover funds in private mode .. so best option would always be the backup.bin

so i guess the backup file is mainly for those importing accounts from bts 1.0

not necessarily </wildguess>

!anyway better just to make a backup and save the brainkey at a save place to be 100% sure all is saved accurate!

The brain key will restore accounts created with that wallet but if you had imported a wif key that account would be lost.
