"In between Serbia and Croatia, on an area of about 6 sq.km, a brand new country named Free Republic of Liberland (Svobodná republika Liberland) has emerged. The new state will adopt Bitcoin, or another Bitcoin-based currency, as its national currency."

"The preparatory committee granted powers to the president to inform the neighbouring countries, as well as UN and the rest of the world, of emergence of a new state via diplomatic notes. Founders of the new state want to establish a society where decent people could prosper without excessive governmental prohibitions and taxes. Our ideals are Monaco, Liechtenstein and Hong Kong” Jedlička said.

The country was proclaimed only last week: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberland

"There are plans for an official cryptocurrency system, although all other currencies will be allowed.
The politicians will be constitutionally forbidden from indebting the nation."

Has something like this been tried before?

Hundreds of times. "Intentional Communities" (IC) have been around for a very long time and are finally taking off. When I was homeless they saved me, literally. Many of them are utilizing cryptos now too which is awesome.

There is no place for geographically based states in a globally decentralised future.

Croatian border police have arrested the president of Liberland, the world's newest micronation, for an attempt to reach the territory of his country situated on the disputed area between Croatia and Serbia, local media said Sunday.

According to the Croatian interior ministry he was detained for crossing the border between Croatia and Serbia outside the official border crossings.

Jedlicka, however, laughed off the incident, saying it was an opportunity to begin talks with officials about opening a border crossing between Croatia and Liberland.

"The Croatian authorities don't recognize me as a head of state yet," he said. "But you couldn't imagine having more fun than I had with these guys. The police offered me their service for Liberland."

Jedlicka says he is now trying to raise money for a fleet of boats so that visitors can instead reach the self-declared country directly via the Danube - an international waterway.
