So I should try leaving it open?  It's just not finding nodes to connect to?  Can I add nodes manually while the wallet is in this state?

I supposed more public nodes will appear sooner or later and you will be able to find a working one closer to your place...
here in china (currently in shanghai) .. the official wallet does not connect to the web socket either due to china's firewall ..
