General Discussion / Re: How is the bitUSD peg holding up?
« on: August 29, 2014, 12:57:44 am »
There just isn't much demand for bitUSD atm. Hence the premium for it.
The only reason for this currently in my view is there are no solid other markets yet for bitUSD to be spent on or traded against (bitUSD <-> bitBTC would be one great helper).

In my eyes its going OK so far, more mature markets will help. As well as having more traders (as well as arbitrage opportunities) and less BTSX speculators (perma-bulls it seems) trading the markets.

Technical Support / Re: Ubuntu..?

I was having a few problems on ubuntu. I backed up my wallets with the export function in ubuntu and downloaded the mac .dmg file and successfully installed it on my mac laptop.
Imported the wallet file and all my balances showed up fine.

No offense, but I strongly suggest not launching new markets until we have a solid wallet.

If users demand new markets then launch. How are we supposed to maintain pegs and learn if we don't have markets like BitBTC at least? We need to be able to trade BitBTC <-> BitUSD above all else.

Most people don't even think in USD which might be part of what is wrong.

BitBTC <-> BitUSD  +5% !!

General Discussion / BitsharesX marketing
« on: August 28, 2014, 08:17:56 am »
I love BitSharesX, but feel it is under represented @ http://bitshares-x.info/

The general feel I get from that website, which seems to be the first port of call for anyone new to BitSharesX is that it is mainly a crypto and securities exchange. It seems to miss the whole crypto 2.0 angle that this technology promises to be. And by that I mean how it can revolutionise personal banking/business/payments including nearly instant payments in multiple currencies (some pegged if that is your interest). Also the whole bitcoin mining problem isn't touched upon (although it is a deep topic for this kind of page possibly).

To me it seems overly serious. I know this is serious business, but its missing a few things and because of that I think its going to miss out on a pretty big demographic. To me you have to do a lot of research presently to work out why you would want to use BitsharesX as your 2.0 crypto of choice, and that seems unnecessary.

Does anyone else agree? Maybe I am being too harsh? Suggestions?

This is the one market I'm really waiting for! :)

Good to hear the peg is holding up as planned. I'm going to wait a week and if everything is still running smooth, I'm seriously considering converting all of my BTC into BTSX. I definitely "get it" at this point... Somebody tell me I'm not being an idiot.

You can be an "idiot" like me then. I for one won't be talking you out of it. Although Ill hang onto some bitcoin's for sentimental reasons :)

General Discussion / Re: New Mandatory Upgrade

Its got something to do with them not matching because of the decimal points I believe. Because if you put the last decimal point one higher it will always work.

Which could have something to do with the price when it was entered, ie if it was in bitUSD to BTSX or if it was in BTSX to bitUSD to begin with (when you flip the market).

General Discussion / Re: Where is BitCNY?
« on: August 27, 2014, 10:49:06 pm »
My thinking now says BitBTC is the one that will help BTSX the most in the short term, as I said in other thread...

"A lot of people have a mental block where they keep their crypto investments separate from their fiat.
Keeping fiat in crypto form either requires a lot of faith in the BTSX system (in which case your a BTSX bull & would prefer to short) or a huge amount of distrust in the regular financial system. (BTSX is very new and can't engender that level of trust yet nor does it have any BitUSD utility yet.) So in the short term <3 months you're relying mainly on traders etc. vs. a lot of demand from people who actually want to keep a position in fiat on the blockchain.

However very few people could resist moving some of their BTC position into BTSX if people are effectively paying them high interest shorting below the peg.

The BitBTC peg will be tighter and effective BTC interest will be more of a talking point. Confidence in BitBTC on BTSX will be easier and more natural than fiat. So you will attract a lot more BitBTC longs than BitUSD longs in the shor term. That peg being tighter will help the BitUSD peg."

My thinking exactly. I mean most people trading crypto want at least over half their exposure to crypto (not fiat). So this market makes the most sense to me, in that it will be the most active/beneficial (short term anyway).

If I own bitUSD and the price goes down of BTSX and I want to offload it (bitUSD), is their an advantage of shorting over selling?

By the way I recommend backing up everything after every transaction. Otherwise due to TITAN you may lose the transaction details.

In one of the hard forks I lost some TITAN details. It's been much better since 0.4.8

I'm pretty sure that is not how it works? Can anyone confirm that?

Great summary!  +5%

Be awesome on the wiki, does anyone know the default mac path to backup? Only thing to add.

General Discussion / Re: Where have all the bids gone?
« on: August 27, 2014, 01:06:03 pm »
What will more than likely help is when BTSX start rising in price. Demand should pick up for bitUSD as people want to lock in profits. The way it is now most of the first users are bitshares believers. I think this is the best theory. Which means it just needs time and movement.
