General Discussion / Re: [DAC Proposal] Future Tech Farm
« on: November 11, 2014, 02:10:50 am »
This sounds interesting; I'm-a take a crack at wrapping my brain around it.  Please let me know if I've got it right.

There's three-ish types of participant in this market:  consumers, producers and delegates (some/all of whom might also be consumers/producers themselves).

Producers build/print/purchase/lease the equipment to grow food, which they then sell on the open market.  In some ways, this is similar to how BitAssets are created / asks are posted in the BTS ecosystem now.  Perhaps producers are even required to "back" their real produce with digital assets as well, as a means of promising quality to the consumers (similarly to how shorts are required to post collateral to prove their eligibility for a loan?), and of course the transaction fees would be payable in FarmShares as well.

[sidebar:  I bet producers would also compete on having the highest quality grade given by inspectors (for which there would be a secondary market).  There might also be opportunities for insurance DACs for dealing with cases where food is of worse-than-advertised quality, inedible upon delivery, etc.]

Consumers, meanwhile, place orders (bids) on the market, specifying the maximum price and minimum quality* that they are willing to accept.  Logistics would be tricky, especially depending on how anonymous the consumer wants to remain, but I bet there are creative ways to solve that problem**

* "quality" would be slightly complex to calculate, as the inspector's reputation would also have to be considered and could affect the maximum price/quantity that would be accepted for sale, similarly to how a claims adjuster's reputation affects the amount of claims that he can authorize to be paid out in an insurance DAC.

** opportunity to develop a logistics DAC with autonomous drones that deliver food to stealth [mailing] addresses?  Perhaps the delivery is handed off to several drones along the way — like an IRL Tor..

And then delegates would secure the network in much the same way that BTS delegates do today.

Is my understanding of the project correct?

There's still two things I'm not entirely certain about.

The first one is, "Why not just grow your own food and sell it for e.g., BitUSD?"  Although, I could see some value in having a dedicated currency, especially if it is more efficient to use that over BitAssets to cover the operating costs of the market and equipment.  And for sure, buying food would require a very different wallet (or at least, a very different GUI) than what you would use to buy BitGLD and such, so some kind of custom software would be beneficial.

[EDIT:  Especially when I start thinking about futures contracts, this makes more and more sense..]

The other thing I'm still not 100% sure I understand is how the producers' equipment is wired into the network — or indeed if that is even necessary.  If I want to run my own offline aquaponics farm and sell my produce on the FoodChain (jej), I've got the FarmShares to burn, and I've got a credible inspector to vouch for the quality of my goods, why shouldn't I be able to participate in the DAC?

Or, to use a (possibly obsolete) metaphor, why do I need ASICs to mine Bitcoin when I've got a perfectly good server farm at my disposal?

Not that the hardware aspect of it isn't awesome to contemplate; I just see that as something that would be separate from the DAC.

Meta / Feature Request: View Topics That Are New Since My Last Visit
« on: November 10, 2014, 01:14:13 am »
The XCurrency forum has a neat feature:

From http://xctalk.com/index.php?app=core&module=search&do=viewNewContent&search_app=forums&change=1

There's a few forums I check several times per day, and this feature saves me a bit of hassle.  (I'm assuming) it shows me all threads that have new posts since the last time I visited the site.  Also helpful: if I reload or page through the results, it maintains my "last visit" time, so I don't have to worry about missing any topics if I go to another page on the forum.

I can achieve almost the same thing on the BTSTalk forums by visiting the Recent Unread Topics page, but there are two important differences:

  • If I load some topics in new tabs as I'm going down the list and then page through the topics list (e.g., click on the link to go to page 2 on the unread topics page), I think I sometimes miss a few topics.  E.g., topics that would have been at the top of page 2 "move" to the bottom of page 1, but since this doesn't happen until I go to page 2, I just end up not seeing those topics.
  • When I'm done, I have to remember to click the "Mark All Messages As Read" button, which I suspect has the side effect of marking as read any posts that were created after I loaded the "Recent Unread Topics" page but before I clicked the MAMAR button (i.e., that I didn't actually get a chance to see before marking them as read).

Yes, wallet sync with blockchain when locked, I don't know how to see progress without unlocking, but you can see that it's still sync by CPU usage.

Good stuff.  Thanks!

afaik, the blockchain is being synced when the wallet is locked, but the blocks are not scanned for incoming transactions.
Only when unlocking the wallet, then those synced blocks are scanned and incoming tx's are read.

Ah.  That is because of how TITAN works, right?

34
Once the BitShares X client has finished launching – but before I've entered my wallet password – does the client immediately begin syncing with the blockchain, or do I need to unlock my wallet before it can do that?

If so, is there a way to see sync progress without unlocking my wallet?

General Discussion / Where do you go for crypto 2.0 news?
« on: October 18, 2014, 06:06:48 pm »
The other day, I noticed that most of the sites I consult for news on the crypto industry are rather... Bitcoin-centric.

I'd love to branch out and find more exciting technologies and DACs to follow and get involved with, but I'm not sure where to look.

What websites/URLs do you follow to stay informed on new developments in the crypto world?

Random Discussion / Re: Free college in Germany?

Low- or zero-tuition college still isn't free — the amount of time you will devote to this pursuit will (probably) be enormous.

What's your end goal?

BTSX Wallet Best Practices and Danger Areas

https://bitsharestalk.org/index.php?topic=8156.0

Thanks!  I found this that looks the most relevant:

2) Do not attempt to restore from an "old backup"
 -  While technically the purpose of a backup is to prevent you from losing funds, the backups at this point in time are there to allow *future versions* to have a hope at recovering all of your funds.  Backups are generated automatically every time you upgrade the wallet.   When you upgrade only use the "most recent" backup.   Generally speaking you shouldn't ever have to dive into a backup file that is older than your last transaction.  While future versions may allow you to recover all of your funds, your transaction history may never quite recover all of the data you may want.

Looks like users don't actually need to backup their wallets every time they upgrade anyway, but even if they do, they are advised only to keep the backup created by the most recent version of the software.

38
When upgrading to a new version of the BitSharesX software, what should I do with my existing wallet backup files?

Should I be creating a new wallet backup every time I upgrade to a new version (and if so, do I need to keep backup files created by previous versions of the software)?

KeyID / Re: [DNS] - OSX users: Try the KeyID new user onboarding flow

It should be instant if you are synced, and both the client and the site should make it clear if you're not synced

Ah, yeah, that was it.  I just had to let my client run for awhile and download the blockchain.  Thanks!

How long should it take once I register my account on freekeyid.com before KeyID.app stops saying "Your key is not yet registered on the blockchain."?

I am HOADRING my BitShares!

Hi Todofixthis, please write this link on the spreadsheet next to your name. It was coincidence. Apologies accepted, everything alright again. Go linkers!

That's very kind of you 38PTSWarrior, thank you.  I have updated the spreadsheet and referenced your post.

I'm glad to see you back on this thread.  I know things got a little tense earlier, especially with the deadline looming; it's been great to see the passion that we share for these projects in action!

43
As a reminder, here are the criteria I used to evaluate URLs:

I'm looking for formal articles and stories written from large or small sources, well written blog posts, etc. In other words, something we'd be proud to post in our Press section, without editing.

There's a lot of room for interpretation in there.  If I rejected an article you posted, please don't take it personally.

I understand that there's money at stake here – your money – so please do make sure I got it right, and call me out on anything you think needs to be discussed.

And again, I'm really sorry about leaving the filter on.  I've disabled it now, and as jernau noted, you can also make a copy of the spreadsheet if you want.

Thanks for helping get us paid. Because you activated the filter, I can't see why some of mine were rejected. These four in particular...

Hi currencydebt.  Sorry about the confusion.

Hey guys.  Coming back online now; it's morning here in Asia (:

I understand your concern over some of the links; I tried to get through the list reasonably quickly to give the I3 team as much time as possible to review the links.

My interpretation of I3's needs might also be different than your (or even I3's) understanding of what they are looking for, so some legit URLs may have been filtered out incorrectly.

Also, I apologize for leaving the filter on so that only accepted URLs were visible; I (incorrectly) thought that anyone else who viewed the spreadsheet would be able to toggle it on and off.  I will leave the filter off now.

Thank you for double-checking my work.  I will be going through the remaining posts on this thread and correcting any URLs that should be forwarded to the I3 team.
