Throwing a handful more into the ring.

  • For thousands of years there was banking. Now, there is Bitshares.
  • Before Bitshares there was banking.
  • Emerge from the dark ages of banking. Bitshares.
  • Bitshares. Banking done different.
  • Bitshares. Everything your bank should have been.

Also, almost no one outside of this tiny world knows what a DAC is. Heck, most don't really know what bitcoin is. Words like decentralized, distributed, autonomous, open-source, etc. have little meaning in this context to them. So it all depends on who this statement is aimed at.

Is this something a member of my blockchain-clueless family would potentially be seeing or is it aimed at crypto nerds?

Positioning Bitshares as an alternative to traditional banking potentially reaches both groups.

I'm of the opinion that Bitshares should be positioned as an alternative/replacement to traditional banking. It communicates a lot without requiring a lot be said. It also serves as a kind of action statement to those looking for freedom from traditional banking or those who are unbanked.

I vote for decentralized over distributed and like app and application. I also like platform as it is more accurate and gives Bitshares more gravitas than just app or application alone.

Maybe something like:

Bitshares is a global decentralized app platform that functions as an alternative to traditional banking.

Some thoughts on the draft...

Most importantly, who do you expect to be reading this in the near term? Who is the target?

You will note I separated the two important things your were saying on page 4. Each is a significant benefit on its own. I think page 2, as it is currently written, is confusing.

Page 2

Deposit your money in whatever currency you choose.

You decide whether your account holds your preferred national currency, or other assets like gold and silver. It is simple to diversify with multiple currencies and assets.

Page 3:

Earn interest at rates well above traditional banks.

Minimal overhead means 100% of interest paid by borrowers is put directly in the pockets of depositors. (IF POSSIBLE YOU SHOULD NOTE A POTENTIAL RANGE OF RATES)

Page 4:

Bank on your schedule.

You can bank at any time and from anywhere. No more limited banking hours or bank holidays. Bank from the comfort of your home or on a flight over the Pacific.

Page 5:

You won't find transfer fees - or speed - like this at Western Union.

It costs just $.02 and takes only 10 seconds to transfer any amount of money anywhere in the world.

Page 6:

Take back your privacy!

Make purchases and transfers without revealing transaction details or your personal information to nosy third parties.

Page 7:

Rest assured your money is safe.

All deposits are backed by three times their value in reserve. No fractional reserve here!

Page X:

Your money. You're in control.

No daily limits. No invasive questions to answer. No forms to fill out. No authorizations to seek. After all... it is YOUR money.

I love this breakdown. I don't mind the mention of open source and decentralized, however, I believe the other points are much stronger for Joe Average. If you were to ask your parents what matters to them most, that's always a good place to start.

I think we are vastly overestimating how much the average non-tech savvy person will trust "some internet program" to hold their money. Practically the only cases where this has happened is when a bank that they already trusts pushes its mobile or online banking application to them. When they see the interest rates and the other flashy things we can advertise, their immediate reaction will be "oh so it's a scam. Got it.". I think our primary target for the early adopter segment should be people who understand tech, but don't understand bitcoin or hate it because they heard from someone it's a ponzi scheme and that its CEO got arrested. There are loads and loads of them, and I think they will be relatively quick to understand bitUSD, and will see that its better because it is stable. Telling this segment quickly that the system is decentralized (or whatever word is best for conveying this) and that it is open source is extremely important, as when they first see our claims their BS detector will go up and they will read a little further, but if all they see are vague promises then they will dismiss it as a scam.

Frankly if a person does not understand what open source is, or don't see the advantages it offers, they will probably never ever buy bitUSD no matter how we try to sell it to them - unless we're able to offer it to them in partnership with their current bank. They will simply not feel confident enough in their own technical skills to make the judgement call about whether to trust this scheme with their hard earned money.

Shouldn't the target demographic be those who understand and like Bitcoin for what it is but want more than its current functionality offers?

Thank you for your answers.

Ander, when you say claim, does that imply a process is needed to claim them as they vest or will they automatically appear in my wallet as available? Will the remaining balance appear somewhere in my wallet as some sort of a pending balance?

biophil, my understanding was that a premium (I seem to remember 10%) was being paid for the PTS shares due to being locked up. Your understanding is that was priced into the % sharedropped?

So do I have this right... if I had 730 PTS at snapshot and 1 PTS = 100 BTSX, I would receive 3,000 BTS after one month and 73,000 BTS after 2 years? No lockup premium would be due either monthly or after the full two-year term?

General Discussion / Selling PTS Post Snapshot
« on: November 06, 2014, 08:22:00 pm »
Now that the snapshot has taken place what are the reasons to continue to hold PTS? Is 'this' PTS being taken over? If so, will it be part of the Bitshares ecosystem or related to Bitshares in any way?

Is AlphaBar's PTS different than 'this' PTS? How will it be related to Bitshares?

Can someone explain vesting? If I had 730 shares of PTS at the snapshot how many shares of BTS do I have on day one of its launch? One? My understanding is that I will have 730 BTS shares, plus an additional 73 shares at 10%, after two years. Is that correct?

Can DNS be sold? Is there any reason to continue to hold it?

I know the ultimate goal with this reorganization is to simplify (and I'm hopeful it will) but currently it is confusing. It is hard to decipher which communications are from official sources (or even who the official sources are) and which are from well-meaning but only partially informed sources. As well, understanding which ideas are proposals and which are decided courses of action can be difficult.

I plan to continue to hold for the long-term as my hope is that Bitshares can recover from this damage.

Thanks Akado! I don't have the technical background to assess whether number 3 is possible either but figured I would ask.

I made a number of suggestions to section 1.0 as Anonymous between about 1:30-2:30 pm today. I have never edited a Google doc so let me know if this was done correctly and is what you were looking for and I will forge on.

Thank you Akado.

1. Is there an official location that announces that a successful snapshot has taken place? If not, it makes sense to have one.

2. Sounds good.

3. My thought was that in the future new DAC shares might be distributed automatically in some manner without having to do a wallet import. I don't know enough about the PTS or BTSX wallets and how new DACs operate to know whether they even can be linked.

Even better, in my mind one wallet could reflect ones holdings in any BitShares or BitShares affiliated project. Instead of a PTS wallet, BTSX wallet, VOTE wallet, DNS wallet, etc. one would have just a single BitShares wallet.

BitShares PTS / Snapshot Questions
« on: August 24, 2014, 09:25:55 pm »
I purchased PTS last week before the snapshot and have some questions.

1. Did the snapshot occur? Where would I find that confirmation?

2.  What happens if I sell my PTS before either of the new DACs launch? How do I get the shares due me? The way I understand it one imports their PTS wallet into the new DACs wallet to redeem their shares. Is that correct? Does each new DAC really launch a wallet? If I import my wallet without any PTS any longer will I still get the shares due me?

3. Are there plans for shares in new DACs to be automatically distributed to PTS/AGS snapshot holders?

Thank you for the help in understanding the process.

BitShares PTS / Re: MOVING PTS BETWEEN NEW DAC SHARE WALLETS
« on: August 22, 2014, 03:01:51 pm »
I have yet to move my PTS to the new BTSX wallet to claim my BTSX. I have a few questions about moving my PTS around.

1 - After I move my PTS to the new BTSX wallet, do I need to move my PTS back to my PTS wallet and then move my PTS to the new VOTE and DNS wallets when they come out?
OR
Can I move my PTS from my new BTSX wallet to the new VOTE wallet and from there to the new DNS wallet?

I'm assuming I have to move my PTS back and forth between each new DAC shares wallet and my PTS wallet. If so there ought be someone working on streamlining this process.

2 - Suppose I leave all my PTS in my PTS wallet and can't access them for a year or longer. Will I always be able to transfer them to each and every new DAC shares wallet to collect my new DAC shares?

Again, I'm assuming that yes I can as long as each new DAC is "operational".

You don't need to move your PTS, simple create BTSX wallet and import your PTS wallet and you will get shares, all your PTS stay in place, see at the end:
http://wiki.bitshares.org/index.php/Bitshares-x-how-to

I'm trying to understand as well. I read the wiki and understand how that applied to the snapshot for btsx. Will it be the same for every new DAC launched going forward? In other words, for every DAC that launches one has to import their PTS wallet into their BTSX wallet to receive that DACs shares? For this current snapshot, does one have to import their PTS wallet once for each DAC or will once do it for both? Does one have to wait until the DACs actually release or can they do it any time after the snapshot?

Thanks for the replies. I haven't been through the process so trying to understand. No plans to sell my PTS but want to understand the implications if I did.

If I no longer have PTS in my wallet after the snapshot how do I import my wallet to get shares in new DACs? Is there plans for shares in new DACs to be automated for PTS/AGS snapshot holders?
