General Discussion / Re: I'm Nervous, Please Reassure Me

Actually even if it's not ready it should be marketed heavily by the marketing team with an expected launch date, but from what I heard, it's already in operation.

Looks like this weekend...

https://bitsharestalk.org/index.php?topic=6236.msg181670#msg181670

This is precisely the type of stuff I think we could get all the marketing delegates working on pushing together.  If they were to put their pet projects on hold for just a short period of time, have Cass make up a few awesome looking banners (which he has been known to do) we could see "mine for bitUSD" alllll over the place.  If we don't do it, I assure you you will see a competitor like Nubits doing it...and guess what, they can print money out of thin air to fund it without nubit holder approval.

Market it. Market it. Market it. We need to market any useful functions we have right now heavily. The longer it takes to get traction, less chance we have. If you look at google trends we are just about at August levels...if we go any lower that means the early adopter crowd (like us) are fading away too. http://www.google.com/trends/explore#q=bitshares&date=today%2012-m&cmpt=q&tz=

I can't wait. I think this will be big (assuming it actually works as claimed).

Awesome. Do it. bitUSD. Bytemaster is right here, one currency, tight peg. USD is standard world currency, it is what should be used.

Bytemaster, I like this a lot. When is it ready? If it's already happening, is it being marketed heavily all over the internet by the marketing team?

Make it a website. Don't put it in the client

General Discussion / Please Provide bitOIL Feeds!
« on: February 03, 2015, 09:11:39 pm »
I really really really want to buy bitOIL. Can some delegates step up and figure out how to do this. Do it and you will get yourself higher pay. That is how this works, show value and get paid for it.

This is the problem, it is the rare person that is self motivated enough to figure this out and do it on his own drive without anyone telling them to do it. But you don't have to have that person to make this work. Instead, we NEED someone managing to actively try to get things like bitOIL implemented. Come up with the idea, put up a bounty, and recruit to get a delegate to do it. Otherwise, stuff just keeps on not happening.

And COME ON bitOIL is such easy and obvious low hanging fruit to increase adoption. Do you realize how popular oil is right now to trade? Do you realize how hard it is and how much money it takes to trade it on the real market? A lot! Get a good market for this and advertise it to crypto traders and they will jump all over it. DO IT!

This is just one example of the several things that could easily happen, but are not. We need some management and recruiting here. I'm not saying bytemaster is not doing good at what he is doing, instead, that we need an additional person to do these things.

You're right.

Its all open source: one can spin off a similar project or two.

Many would say it is as strong as the community behind it.

So, I guess, it boils down to what can I do for it.

I gave it my thousands of dollars and my thoughts and ideas as best I can. I am not in a life situation to work for bitshares, so that is all I can do.

Thank you for all the answers, I really appreciate the information...still a little concerned about marketing, but feeling better. I would really like better regularity on newsletters and updates. It's not just a greedy request for me, it would help investor confidence and reduce sell pressure. I'm sure I'm not the only one who is/was getting nervous.

Wow that's great...seems a little too good to be true, but we'll see. I sure would like the U.S. team to be pushing as hard as the Chinese who seem to just do really good work. They have really achieved a lot. Having the bitCNY direct exchange is incredible. I guess maybe they have more motivation because of financial restrictions there?

Please tell me I'm wrong about all this so I don't have to sell my bitshares and give up on what seem like such an amazing concept.

I haven't heard much about marketing recently, what is the new team doing? Did Adam stop doing his "quick updates form Adam?" I suspect he is no longer working for bitshares as much, or maybe not at all. Please tell me I am wrong

On a related note, I am getting nervous. I am seriously questioning the management and organization of the bitshares team. Your idea was so great, but it really seems like you are failing to execute. You need better personnel, scheduling, and task management. Stop letting this be so incredibly open source, it needs fine guidance right now. Make a list of all the things that need to be done, choose people, hire people, and then manage them and push them to get it done. And get ALL of them done, there are so many things that can be done in parallel right now, but only a few are. You developed a freakin' system that lets you get paid by the blockchain! That's incredeble, use it! Do not waste that funding advantage.

This is a battle against time, many are working to implement better/different solutions than you as fast as they can, yet here we are six months later and the wallet still barely works and we just got a website. And from what I hear the light wallet will only have minimal functionality upon release...only able to send/recieve, no market, and don't put too much money in it because it has some problems, not good. The opportunity is all but gone.

I love this idea, or some form of it!

...I feel like we have trouble implementing all of our good ideas. They just seem to float around, but little gets done, likely because of lack of qualified devs. Maybe we should have a delegate whose job it is to identify features the community wants, find and organize devs to do it, and manage their progress.

General Discussion / Re: BitUSD atomic cross chain trading
« on: January 27, 2015, 11:11:26 pm »
One important thing I want to emphasize is that, if nothing else, I don't want to have to manually exchange my BTC to bitBTC through some gateway. That is too much work. I just want to send BTC to the bitshares exchange trade it, and then send it directly to my BTC wallet when I am done. Maybe integrate a BTC wallet into the client? I don't know, just trying to see a way to make it work. I can tell you I would definitely use the service if it were available. I HATE having to trust my bitcoin on regular exchanges.

I hope coinbase or the winklevoss don't add pegged assets or something similar into their exchanges, because those I would trust to use and they would effectively have all the same functionality as the bitshares exchange. Don't put too much importance on the decentralize aspect of bitshares, most people just want to trade what they want to trade, when they want to trade it, quickly and in a safe and easy way whether it's decentralized or not. It's the same concept as what bytemaster says about the light wallet, most people won't care that it is less decentralized.

I would love to be able to trade BitUSD for Bitcoin or other alts directly and not have to deal with going though BTS everytime.

I would love to see this. Ant not even have bitBTC at all, just real BTC on the internal exchange. Wow can you imagine how useful this would be, a real decentralized exchange you can send bitcoin to directly. This would raise the value of bitshares tremendously. People would love this. I know this is possible, I hope it gets implemented.

You know it's possible? Please enlighten us..

It is possible for certain definitions of "decentralized" and "real BTC".  You have to be willing to limit decentralization from "blockchain consensus cannot be changed/violated without approval/collusion of a super majority of stakeholders (which is typically a very large number of people)" to "block chain consensus cannot be changed/violated without approval/collusion of 46 active delegates". You also have to define "real BTC" as "I hold the private keys to control ownership/movement of the BTC and no one can realistically change that (assuming the cryptography isn't broken and is strengthened to keep up with the computational capacity of computers available) unless they either steal my private keys or the blockchain consensus is changed/violated (as explained earlier in the definition of decentralized)".

If you are willing to accept these definitions, then it is possible to exchange BitUSD for "real BTC" on our internal exchange in a "decentralized" manner. I explain how to do that here.

I think it's possible with something along the lines of what arhag describes. I am willing to except varying levels of decentralization and disassociation to put it in effect. The important thing is that from a user standpoint, they only have to send their bitcoin to the bitshares exchange and then it shows up. Whether it's actually an IOU or held by a trusted gateway or whatever is ok as long as it is more decentralized than a standard exchange. I do not know enough about the technical details to actually explian it, but from my basic knowledge I believe that somehow, in some form, this user experience could be made to be AS IF you were trading real BTC. I should have specified this.

I would also guess that some incredible technical innovation would make a 100% decentralized version possible. That comes from all of my reading about atomic cross chain trading. Maybe it's not, you (toast) definitely know more than me, or almost anyone, about this.

My comment was really just an attempt to inspire some devs to create what I think would be a killer app for bitshares. I feel that we need one really good reason for an early adopter user base to start using bitshares, and a real decentralized exchange that accepts real BTC is the best I can think of. Once you get a user base like that, it is easier to get users for all of the other features bitshares has/will have.

How easy would it be to implement this in BitShares? TLDR; Payments are locked for nBlocks and refunded unless a secret from receiver is revealed.
