Well that is the multi-million dollar question..

To continue the analogue above, why have the CPUs doing work that speicialist GPUs can do? Tying it all together is no mean feat though, so if they pull it off, fair reward due. ATM we don't know that it's not possible and in all likelihood it is practical in a useful way.

I like this analogue. Obviously, "Application-Specific" tools are going to be easier to implement and better in the short to medium term.

Ethereum is ambitious to say the least and setting that up is going to take a lot of work. It will be interesting to see Ethereum develop to a point that it can draw on 'ASIC' like tools, such as BitShares, and then do more with those. I can't see Ethereum every replacing BitShares or others - even it's pretentions of doing Namecoin in 9 lines, understates the benefits of having a tool for the job. Ethereum might add flexibility but when you don't need flexibility, that overhead perhaps not needed either.

Having clear legislation must be a big positive for business enagement. It's not quite death by taxes but might be a PITA for individuals to understand - I expect it'll be a positive overall.

But wasnt this clarification?

Clear as mud to me when I read it. I'm not familar with US taxes; perhaps it's clearer to those who've done an IRS form before.

The merchant can just get the license. I don't see the big deal.

I'm no expert in FinCen licensing but suspect it can't be simple. The likely requirement for KYC to prevent laundering, would be a stop enough but then the fees and trouble to get a license seem clear:

From Coindesk: http://www.coindesk.com/bitcoin-law-money-transmission-state-level-us/

In addition to the disclosure requirements, the financial obligations are substantial. A New York money transmitter must carry at least a $500,000 surety bond, and bonding agents will require a recurring yearly payment of 2-10% of the total bond amount, depending on the personal credit rating of the bond’s guarantor.

An applicant must also satisfy minimum capitalization requirements that push well into the six figures. Add to that the cost of annual reporting, record-keeping, audits and legal fees. It should come as no surprise that (i) the costs of licensure, combined with (ii) the uncertainty of whether licensure is even required in the first instance, drive some businesses to not apply at all.

Keep it simple?..

Is the C of DAC, Corporation? I prefer Adam Levine's suggestion that it's Consensus.
I wonder it is the "Autonomous" AND "Consensus" that makes its potential to function as a Corporation?

"Distributed", "Autonomous" "Consensus"

Just use corporations. Worrying about regulators even in the marketing of your ideas? If you're that afraid you wont even be able to talk about it.

wtf!?

I suggested Consensus because it made more sense; I'm not 'marketing ideas' and certainly not worried about regulators - are you projecting your own concerns?

I prefered Consensus as that is a positive statement suggesting collective support. Corporation is a dull word, with many negative connotations that perhaps doesn't add anyhing. The Corporation is usually the sum total and whole, defining the boundary of action and interest. What the DAC is, might act as Corporation in a new way. You can have DA as adjectives too, if you want it that badly; I don't mind eitherway.

KeyID / Re: How are bid collisions resolved?

It's all about transaction fees. Miners pick the transactions anyway ("oops I didn't see your bid!").

How much of any transaction is visible to miners?.. If there is anything visible ahead of their selecting it, how is this not a liability allowing evil miner to manipulate markets to their advantage??.. I'm no expert when it comes to what already exists as playing financial markets but I can imagine giving priority to ones own transactions could leverage quite a gain on any fluid market, it would be an invisible pump and dump; the miner would just be more efficient and gets confirmations - not quite HFT but similar outcome.

Total BTS X coins surely is 4,000,000 as per this and others. I don't know where OP got 15% from but then I've not really ever understood the size of AGS.

You could consider what value BTS would need to be to replace that lost from the initial PTS drop but BTS are not PTS, the whole point is the added value and utility that follows.

The why is important but there are better ways of doing that than demonizing what exists. Talking down the opposition shouldn't be necessary.

You might consider that Governments are nefarious, others might disagree and might appreciate their efforts; and yet you would both agree on what is being done here to progress what is possible.

If such narrative was written as a positive, to acknowledge how empowering the individual is liberating, it might go down better than kicking those who 'control us'?.. Even just abstracting it to the idea of how third parties are inefficient, might do better than tending to a typically libertarian slant and talking of 'others imposing the will of the majority by force'. There's no point in alienating half the political spectrum - just give them the tool that changes their reality and they will learn from that positive. Challenge what they hold dear and you'll scare them into wondering what viewpoint they are supporting.

2¢ - I would prefer that we're politically neutral, as that's less likely to meet resistance.

In my opinion it is not clever to rethorically attack gvernments like this. Just provide the technology that will make it .. happen and be diplomatic and friendly otherwise :)

<snip/>
It is just not neccesary to make yourself enemies with authorities. It is against your cause.

Why do people still do it? Because fighting mode in which a specific enemy is identified and in which roles are clear (I am/we are good, the other side is bad) is calming for humans.

I agree and think that's an important point. I'm surprised to see some form of Newsletter evolving above! The formal position should be neutral. Talking politics is likely to alienate people and will bring a backlash that suggests personal egos and opinions are clouding the dialogue. Any talk of Government being force or nefarious, is partial and open to misinterpretation.

Demonising others, like Government, is a mistake - and shouldn't be necessary. What exists currently, is more a statement about where we are. Ignoring some of the inevitability of history to suggest that there's somehow a conspiracy against what it obviously better, just makes the challenger look weak, where the reality is more that we're just moving forward and beyond what has been possible previously.

The old addage of 'no politics; no sport; and no sex', tends to apply. Such talk tends to put those who don't exactly agree on the defensive and drives a people apart rather than drawing them together.

Focus on providing the tool and not what it is to be used for - leave that to people's imagination.

That was the first form I had but then there's Keyhotee and is that a DAC.. or outside BitShares and so credited Invictus. Whatever makes sense.

What are the emerging narratives in this space?

The removal of central authority.

+decentralised +autonomous +consensuses

It goes beyond [Privacy, free information, voluntarism and decentralization]; it's empowering people; it's enabling the development of democracy and supporting liberal values - it's progress. The ability of those with existing power and wealth to frustrate and control others, is the dominate problem that most people aren't aware of because they haven't had an alternative to make that obvious.. alternates incoming.

General Discussion / Re: New website sneak peek: BITSHARES.ORG
« on: March 18, 2014, 09:36:11 pm »
Looks good. A few initial impressions..

- I don't like the dark navy and dark grey backgrounds to the elements below [Find out what we can do with BitShares] and the Bitcoin to BitShares
- [Beyond Bitcoin Las Vegas] could do with being a link.
- FAQ could do with being in the top line with News and Community, as that's one of the strongest bits of content.
- "Find out what we can do with BitShares" -> "Find out what you can do with BitShares"
- [Secure; Low Cost; Convenient; Decentralized] each need depth - perhaps just link to the FAQ for something relevant.
- [BitShares in the news] links appear to be javascript rather than simple links. Please check the site works without javascript!.. eek I just undid the noscript permissions and a large part of the page doesn't appear without javascript enabled.
- "We are the Reimagineers." - hmm.. pictures of the people who be a good addition. Since you like javascript perhaps do something novel like when mouse over that person the picture changes to be more attentive and when off target falls back to looking busy.
