General Discussion / Re: Economics of subsidized mining pool
« on: February 05, 2015, 04:43:43 pm »
Well.. offering additional 5% will create a subsidised pool.  This would attract a large pool of miners out there.  But the other well-established pools are not going to wait there and do nothing. They will do all it can to compete and pull the miners back.  And they are very competitive.

I'd like to pimp my script to "rock solid" too .. what are the missing points for that? Better exception handling? flexible exchange RPC parsing? are we even talking about code style or about doing the "calculation" right?

Can't we have one rock-solid script that pulls prices at individual times and use individual feed-publishing-rules and price calculated (weighted, non-weighted, set of exchanges, etc..)

Disclaimer: I am not selling my script here, just wanted to start a discussion about what degree of freedom is necessary

I am looking forward to a 'rock-solid' script too.  This would raise standard across.

I cant wait until the people who were upset by the november changes have finished selling all their BTS.

I just find it incredible that there could be so many whales who had huge stakes in BTSX that were so pissed off by the transition to BTS that they decided the whole thing wasn't worth it and that they just completely wanted out. It's like they didn't really get the vision of what BitShares is all about (or had some other understanding of the vision) and dumped a load of money into it initially anyway. I too can't wait until these angered whales are finished (IMHO foolishly) selling their stakes so that we can go back to an increasing price.

I am not sure if the selling is due to bts whales or simply a blockchain employee/account user needing some fiat to feed their stomach. People do need to eat.

BitGold has large spread, it will be a problem to pool operator to buy bitGold, also bitUSD has higher yield compare to bitGold.
Its getting tighter. If the required support for bitUSD is achieved, please add bitGold as a mineable option asap. I think it would have added appeal.

I'm in favour of providing the choice.  It would be good to become known as the first case of mineable digital gold and silver.  There's a lot of miners out there.

Yes, if it is not too much effort, the additional options (they are sexy ones) can pull in much needed attention from the miners.

Stakeholder Proposals / Re: Developer delegate: dev.bitsharesblocks
« on: February 05, 2015, 07:30:17 am »
I can't see any data the last hours from bitsharesblocks
Yea I just got a message about this, looks like the backend is down but for the first time in a long time I'm away for the day with no access to my computer. I'll see if I can get to it from my phone, but you can also switch the api server using the button in the footer.

You are doing an important service. Can we have someone to back you up while you are away/absent?

Will you become instantly re-hired if the robohashes are fixed to be the original ones?

Yes, absolutely, please fix them back if possible

Yes, robohash should be fixed.

Might be a great opportunity for an existing marketing delegate or a budding business development delegate?

Gentso1 is our business dev delegate.  He would be able to take this up easily.  :)

They should definitely be audited by each delegate (_another reason why it is important to separate concerns_ by making sure the person actually running the delegate is a tech person and not just a good worker for the DAC).

This is a good point and should be a good practice for all 100% delegates.

As bytemaster stated here: https://bitsharestalk.org/index.php?topic=13988.msg181865#msg181865, the current core team is now very focused and making steady progress. However, there are still many outstanding issues that we currently do not have the resources to address.

I think Peter makes a strong proposal, and even with the currently low exchange rate, I believe we can find some relatively low-hanging fruit for him to work on which would not conflict with anyone else's work, but still provide valuable polish and improve usability. Note that some discussion is still required in order to decide on specific tasks, but once decided, he will be held accountable at the various levels--by his delegate operator, by myself and the rest of the dev team, and by all of the shareholders.

Given the above, I support and endorse this proposal.

I work with pc on the PTS-DPOS project and I find him a highly professional and committed person.  Besides being skillful in what he is doing, he is a determined person who has proven to deliver quality (many-a-time innovative) work and most importantly on time.

Some time in mid Dec'14, we discovered the same the same transaction malleability bug that affected bitshares was found in PTS-DPOS too.  It was a serious bug that allowed double-spending. We knew we were fighting for time to avoid the bug being exploited by hackers, the result could be wide spread panic among users.  pc worked on a solution meticulously and with a deep sense of urgency.  Within a day or so, he fixed the bug, tested it and readied for a new released - PTS-DPOS v2.01.  (PTS-DPOS v2.01 has been working smoothly since released). It is during this time that I could feel the deep sense of commitment and responsibility in pc.  I enjoy working with him.

I have no doubt that pc would provide tremendous values to the Bitshares team.  I would be helping to review his work for the tasks assigned to him.

Is mining for minebitshares going to be worth doing with just a PC, if I had no specialized mining hardware?

If so, is there a tutorial for how to get started?  Assume I have never mined any crypto currency before, by the time I got into crypto you needed an ASIC to effectively mine, and that option mathed out as inferior to just buying BTC/other cryptos.

There are some cpu-only mineable coins out there. With these, you do not need specialised mining hardware.
