General Discussion / Re: Dead forum...
« on: March 04, 2015, 08:20:44 pm »
The end of an era may be upon us. BitShares is perhaps going through a metamorphosis into it's next stage. I get the impression there is now significant pressure for BitShares to mature in it's approach to the world.
It's a bit sad to say goodbye to childhood, but ahead lie all the opportunities which come with adulthood.

I'm imagining looking back on these times with great fondness and nostalgia. "Remember when we were a small community flying by the seat of our pants?"

The great thing is we were all here to see and live it!

I have been speaking prematurely here, I know, but does anyone else think the writing is on the wall?
Make sure you all relish the time we still have together before BitShares grows too big! :P

General Discussion / Re: Bytemaster and Mumble - A Proposed Solution
« on: March 01, 2015, 01:24:37 pm »

My proposal to bytemaster and to this community is that he consider continuing to hold mumble sessions with us, but that we do not record them. I do not believe that this would betray our principals, because anyone is still welcome to join and participate. What it does provide is an opportunity for all of us to continue the lively discussions that we have grown fond of, while protecting ourselves significantly against the accidental rapid dissemination of subjective misinterpretation.

Are you suggesting having no recording at all? Not even an edited release? If this is the case, my response follows.

It's all well and good making anyone welcome, but I'm frustrated by the idea of having no recording.
The problem is that the mumble sessions are brilliant! Currently I can listen to a recording if I can't make it to the session in real time. I can even submit questions on reddit for fuzzy to ask for me.
As it stands the mumble sessions are wonderful for the community. I consider them to be a very valuable part of the BitShares experience.

If there are no recordings, only people lucky enough to be able to attend will get the benefit, and I think this is CRAP! I don't care for the conference analogy - it doesn't hold water (surely the reasons are obvious?).

Anyone is welcome to the mumble sessions if they're lucky enough to not be:
  • at work
  • asleep
  • doing something with their family
  • having a medical procedure done
  • in an area with no internet access...

...I was going to do an absurdly long list for comedy value, but unfortunately I have to go out because I have other commitments which are unavoidable... :P

Here we go Fuzzy, I have a question which will reveal my ignorance!
I have a general idea, but can you clarify for me what exactly is meant by 4c?

Quote
Should we Consider 4c and work to achieve it?

I think it's the 4 c's of marketing?
  • Clients
  • Costs
  • Communications
  • Convenience

There seem to be variations on a theme, but do I have the jist here?

General Discussion / Re: Some questions about MaidSafe
« on: February 23, 2015, 09:06:50 pm »
I saw this today http://blog.maidsafe.net/2015/02/23/what-is-the-safe-network/

It explains what the SAFE Network is, and could be. It mainly concentrates on the differences between it and 'normal' internet.

As things stand currently, it does require internet service providers (but the article also mentions mesh networks at the end).

Quote
SAFE has the potential to impact the physical layers of the existing Internet, through a reduced number of servers, as well as many of the software layers that transfer our data around the network. We have said in the past that we will replace the parts of the Internet and we think this will happen in time, but possibly complimenting the existing Internet is a better way to think about SAFE in the nearer term.

I think it's well worth investigating all that's going on with MaidSafe - it seems awesome.
Unfortunately I haven't yet managed to put enough time into this :'(

We should have a small pause at 0.0005btc/bts

If a customer pays in BTC and then gets a refund after their money was held in escrow as BitUSD, they could get less BTC back than they expect. How would this problem be resolved?

I don't understand your logic. The customer will always get the USD equivalent.

It's not a problem that the customer will get the USD equivalent, so long as they're fully aware of that when they pay for something with BTC.

If they pay for something in BTC without it being made very clear beforehand that any refund will be USD equivalent, they can reasonably expect to get the full amount of BTC back.

I suppose the simplest answer is for things to be priced in USD in the first place, rather than BTC? Then if they pay using BTC it's just a matter of a price conversion to get the USD amount.
It all depends on how each exchange / market is set up, but my intention was to point out a possible scenario where the customer could feel ripped-off.

Anyway, sorry to cause a diversion over such a trivial thing. Carry on with the good work. Thanks!

Wouldn't it be so much easier if our dreams came true and everyone just used BitAssets? :)

It's not the value of BTC that matters to the vendor, it's the price in equivalent USD. If someone paid 300 dollars and I received less BTC but still at 300, it's a benefit.

I'm talking about the buyer's perspective, i.e. they could stand to get back less BTC than they put in (where refunds occur). There are ways around this (rgcrypto suggested one), but it needs bearing in mind...

If it is claimed that a 'cold wallet' has been 'hacked' then one or more of the following is true:
  • It was NOT a cold wallet
  • It was NOT hacked
  • The 'hack' involved someone having access to 'keys' by non-internet based means
  • Someone was so incredibly lucky that they managed to guess the private keys (not realistically feasible)

edit: this wasn't in response to your post @Ander.

I hope that a large percentage of a cryptocurrency hasn't ended up in the hands of thieves. It's no good for the ecosystem (at least in the short term). If a distribution is too heavily in the hands of thieves, people are less inclined to grow the system. Then the arguments pop up about whether or not to revert the blockchain.

I suppose there is the SLIGHT chance that people will veer away from centralised exchanges if problems keep occurring!  :P

Hopefully bter will have this sorted soon without any major problems...

There are probably a lot more women here, and in crypto in general, than you'd think. By using names that do not single them out as female they can interact in the community like anyone else.

One member, mira, is self identified as female and had some remarks the last time this was brought up.

https://bitsharestalk.org/index.php?topic=7525.msg100130#msg100130

Though I agree there are likely more than we think I am inclined to believe that it is still largely male dominated space. ..which is odd.   You'd think the mere presence of the man who is Riverhead would have them coming here in hordes.

BITUSD  >>> NUBITS
Instant Rate 1.00 BITUSD = 0.1334 NBT   >:(   (?)

And yet the other way around:
Quote
1.00 NBT = 0.97716786 BITUSD

I think they have teething troubles. About a week ago (?) the rate for converting BitUSD to BTC was completely wrong.
I told one of their operators about the problem over the chat facility and they fixed it the same night.

edit: unfortunately there currently are no operators available...
