General Discussion / Considering putting my spending BTC into Bitusd
« on: February 18, 2015, 12:27:36 am »
It's been a while since I checked in on Bitshares and it's great to see so much progress. I see a few compromises have been made on the initial idea of Bitshares X (now called Bitshares, kudos for simplifying the mess of projects).

It's unfortunate that asset value tracking without an oracle was not feasible and a shame that data feeds seem to be a permanent fixture within the system. I'm left with doubts in terms of the reliability of a system that relies on <100 feeds from individuals. I can't imagine a billion bitUSD floating around tethered to a few feeds all averaging the same basket of bts exchange rates from a small number of crypto exchanges. It just doesn't seem reliable enough to scale.

I love the progress that has been made on the market rules within Bitshares. I don't see a 'black swan event' as likely, there is enough collateral sitting on the sidelines, the engine is responsive enough (and there is sufficient liquidity??).
Not being able to sell below the median price feed seems logical.
It's great to see shorts ranked by interest. Very clever. I'm not 100% sure how the whole interest thing works exactly. Interest is paid by the person shorting bitusd into a pool managed by the software. Is the interest paid in bitusd or bts? Surely bts? How is the interest pool then distributed to holders of bitusd? How does a holder of bitusd claim their interest?

Liquidity. I can certainly see a strong case for buy bitusd volume, no issues there. I struggle to see where sustained sell bitusd volume will come from. Shorting bitusd only makes sense given the assumption that bts will appreciate relative to bitusd, what happens when less people are making that assumption? How can we be sure that there will always be a liquid sell/short bitusd wall sitting there?
What's the deal with the 1 month term for shorts? Why such a high turnover? Does this just serve to discourage shorting? Surely you don't want this?

Sorry about being so critical, I'd just like to clear up some misunderstanding I may have about the tech. I'm considering putting my hot wallet spending bitcoin into bitusd, it will be great to have the stability (and interest) of bitusd between bitcoin purchases online. Shapeshift.io will make this really easy.

Biophil, I've seen you on the Nxt price speculation thread. I'm really disappointed that the Nxt community is so dismissive of Bitshares and bitassets, you're right, it is bordering on arrogance. I've taken the time to learn the mechanics bitassets and I'm very impressed, it's a beautiful solution to a standing problem, mechanically sound, aligning incentives in a way that promotes accurate price discovery.

Who knows if it will work, I'm about 50% sure it will.

I'm probably more of a Nxt fanboy than a Bitshares disciple, but I see the HUGE potential of bitassets. Bitassets will be crypto's killer app, the entire world will play ball with a project that brings the benefits of crypto to real world assets. Anonymity within the system is a bonus of course!

Kudos to the Bitshares crowd for working on this killer feature, you will take the fall, hard, if you fail. But you'll probably own the world with successful implementation. Nxt should be watching! Nxt should be copying!

General Discussion / Bitshares Killer App
« on: August 05, 2014, 01:36:30 am »
I've been watching Bitshares pretty closely for a while now and wrote an article about it back in April. I feel I've got a pretty good understanding of what you plan to achieve (despite the crazy maze of branding that new users have to navigate their way through!)

Bitshares looks pretty promising but I still haven't invested, although I did get tipped some pts at some point (cheers fuznuts!) Now I don't want to get put on the stake here, but lately all my 'bitcoin 2.0' investment capital has been flowing into Nxt. Despite this, Bitshares still holds my interest. DPOS and corresponding block/confirmation time sounds great and could very well be a superior system to Nxt and its planned transparent forging. It's excellent that Bitshares has some implementation of pure proof of stake as the basis for all its projects, something we can all agree on is that POW and associated meta-coin projects (Counterparty, Mastercoin) are supremely disadvantaged by riding on antique chains.

But I don't want to discuss different POS implementations, it's insignificant in comparison to what you might have in the pipe. I want to write an article about how Bitshares X plans to track real world asset values in a completely decentralized way. That's your killer app if you can achieve it! I must admit (with my limited understanding) I don't think it can be done without the use of a centralized oracle/data feed.

I have done some research to see what I can find on the subject, but there is limited information available, Bitassets get loaned into existence by users pledging collateral (in the native coin/currency/share) the value of that asset (denominated in the local unit of value) is given by other users bids and asks. What is the incentive for order books to track the true value of a real world asset? Is it an issue that 2x of equity must be pledged to get 1x of a particular Bitasset? What is the effect of a liquidations due to volatility? (and many other questions). I get the feeling everyone thinks asset value tracking will be awesome, but no one understands how it is supposed to work and what its chance of success is.
Enlighten me!

Hey Bitshares folks.

Please have a read of my attempt to make Bitshares a little more understandable. http://deadloch.com/understanding-bitshares/

Please reply with any suggestions for improvement... or anything I've got dead wrong.

I'll be writing an article on the Bitshares X landscape in the very near future. I'm liking its proposed features.

Thank you everyone for your feedback.

The article is posted here: http://deadloch.com/understanding-bitshares/

I can still make changes, keep sending them in if necessary!
