xeldal is up 1.6.29

Is there any way to verify that the keys I'm using are going to work? 

is suggest_brain_key   and   update_witness  always necessary?

If you have more than one account in your wallet, what account do the keys returned from suggest_brain_key refer to?  and will they work if you have more than one account in wallet?

Nevermind, I got it.  the owner key i imported was not the active key... after dumping .9 active key and importing create_witness worked.

Use dump_private_keys to make sure your wallet has them. May have to import them again.

I deleted my wallet and started over
imported key
create_witness gives same error

dump keys lists 2 keys

5K6....

5k6 is the one i imported.

Yes it is true, some delegates lost is turn and the block interval was 6 second

fox and three btsnow witnesses are missing blocks. I hope btsnow has separate vps for each witness.
