I dont think we need a demo and a testnet .. we can just have relaxed hardfork rules in the testnet and have it very centralized ..
we can even create the usual bitassets and have the price feed be the last traded price within the dex instead of using an external proce (which wouldnt exist anyway) .. thatway .. people can even experiment with margin calls etc..
I don't think so.
A demo network should be somehow stable, for (new) users who want to know what BitShares is and/or what features are already available.
A test network can change frequently, for new feature developments, for the one who want to experience (untested) new features.

My 2 cents..

I'm developing percentage transfer fee feature. Wanna test on a test network first when completed  ;D

@xeroc: are you doing as this document?
How can I run a wallet server?

There is a brief installation instruction here https://github.com/cryptonomex/faucet/blob/master/README.md

//Update:
Imo we need both demo and test networks.

Run demo with a stable version, all witnesses in one node, and be voted in with large enough stakes, no need to connect to outside. Others can play with committee and workers etc. We can periodically reset it if parameters are changed badly.

Run test network with developing versions. A bit harder to manage since need more coordination.

I could set up a test network.  What Repo would we want to use?  Bitshares or Graphene.

I am thinking the best option would be to modify the Genesis block to only contain the inits and the faucet account.  Put all funding in the faucet account and automatically pay out 1m FakeBTS to all new registrants.
Yes .. i wanted to figure out how the faucet works anyway ..

Do you have a spare machibe that can hoste a witness, cliwallet, web wallet and a rubyonrails app?
If so, please send me a mail and we can set this up .. we could even document the steps and make a tutorial ..

I could even donate the domain demo.bitshares.eu or test.bitshares.eu if you want

@noisy , if you could set up a publicly available test network, it would be really great.

If you could make it stable & reliable we could even turn it into a demo network as described here:

@jakub I think you're doing something related, maybe it's better you and @noisy can work together.

I see, that https://github.com/cryptonomex/graphene and https://github.com/cryptonomex/graphene-ui/ changed Licence to MIT, so I guess there is no problems of using this code to build separate network (even without permission of anyone) - please correct me if I am wrong.

Actually in that case maybe this is not a bad idea. I could use something around 75% resources of my server: http://www.soyoustart.com/pl/oferta/e3-ssd-3.xml

Of course test network should be a network of multiple nodes, so we would need more volunteers with own servers. I could prepare an instruction how to setup everything. Who is with me? What do you think about that?

As you can see from my profile, I came here after long break. My question is... what about test bitshares network, which we all agree, that this would be great for demo purpose.
Since you had a long break, perhaps you're now full of energy .. to build a demo network?
