Yes, free service does not include tickets. Everybody can connect.
But you still have connection limits applied.

You can pay with other assets, if the asset owner configures them properly

Does this mean I have to purchase bitshares on another platform and send them to bitshares exchange.
Not sure why the fees for the trade just can't be taken out of the trade.
Seems to be a convoluted process.

In short: Most likely the fee pool of your asset ran out, so you need to recharge some BTS onto your account
