Found protoshares wallet from 2014
« on: July 26, 2019, 07:01:27 pm »
Hi all, trying to figure out a way to get my protoshares into Bitshares from an old protoshares wallet.dat file. I have read a few posts on here but most of them the links they use are dead now. I have read the sticky post at the top but there's no way I can afford $500 for help to recover this. I only have like 3000 PTS in the wallet which is only like $100. Here is the post I was following

If, however, you only have a wallet.dat file, you will need to
1. install BitShares 0.9.3
2. create an account in the BitShares 0.9.3 wallet
3. import the wallet.dat file into your account (Import your Bitcoin wallet.dat)
     https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B7288nKEgxRJRXdNX0lmeTljQTg

4. Then Export your keys:
     Export via the console
navigate to the console: Account List -> Advanced Settings -> Console
type: wallet_export_keys [full path to the file]/[file name].json e.g. on Windows: wallet_export_keys C:\Users\[your user name]\Desktop\keys.json e.g. on Mac: wallet_export_keys /Users/[your user name]/Desktop/keys.json e.g. on Linux: wallet_export_keys /home/[your user name]/Desktop/keys.json
Please replace [your user name] with your Windows account name.
and hit Enter
     http://docs.bitshares.eu/_images/export-wallet-console.png

5. Now Proceed to Bitshares 2.0. Create a wallet account model.

6. Go to settings and Restore/Import: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B7288nKEgxRJNVBhUzUyUTFETDg

7. Go to Wallet and Click Lookup Balance: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B7288nKEgxRJU0ZETHZXc20xeTg

8. Create Backup (Make sure you add .BIN when saving the file): https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B7288nKEgxRJTWpiOVRSb3NjeDg
     See the difference: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B7288nKEgxRJMTVqd3V6NmRnREU

9.  You may need to make a new account or change your wallet profile, but the next step is to go to restore/import and import the BIN file.
https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B7288nKEgxRJMkd4QUNVb05IODg

10 Repeat Step 7. you should be able to see your keys. Then Claim it.

11. Donate to luther-10 if you find this helpful. If you want me to make a video, someone should lend  me their unclaim private keys and i will make it into video to help everyone.

Hope this help. Good Luck!

I have finished step 4..however on step 5, it says to create a account on the bitshares 2.0... I downloaded it but when I am going to create an account, I keep getting this error " failed to create an account, faucet cannot create the account you are trying to obtain. Anyone have some links or tutorials that are still good?

I went through this process with my brother a couple years ago, and you should be past the hard part. What account name are you trying to use for bitshares 2.0? Faucets have some restrictions on them.

How many BTS did the 3000 PTS give you, I'm curious? I have a vague memory of 3000 PTS being a fairly large amount. But maybe that's just evidence that I was fairly poor back then...

Thank you! The account name I was trying was only using like 5 digits. I just added a bunch of random numbers afterward and it let me through! I'm at work right now team viewering in my pc but soon as I get home tonight I will continue on the mission. I will let you know how many bitshares I end up with.

edit:

Finally got everything working ! Total BTS shows about 18,000. Not bad for just mining proshares back in the day for a little while. I just looked up the price of BTS back during the 2017/18 bullrun..jesus christ I want to vomit lol. I can't believe I didn't look into this harder back during the bullrun when I was searching all my old usb drives for coins that I use to mine. I sold every other coin at the time but now I remember why I never messed with the protoshares wallet b/c there was so many steps to getting these into BTS so I just skipped it.

Is BTS still a legit project or would it be wise to just sell what I have now? I mean if this project is still ongoing and has a future, there is no point of me selling now, I may as well just hold them another 5 years or so.

BTS is still ongoing (don't take that as investment advice, disclaimer disclaimer), with a pretty active community and these nice self-funding mechanisms.

Wow, so now I have a new problem. My balance isin't showing anymore for some reason. I tried going through the whole process again and now when I look up the balance, it says No unclaimed balances found. I have no idea how it worked last night and now it won't work anymore. This software is so confusing.

You can claim a balance only once. It should now be sitting in your account.

Thats the thing, I never claimed anything I don't believe. When I load my backup file, its showing my account name as " Null ".. I go to the send tab and try to send out the bts but it won't let me choose " Null " as the account.

I've made like 3 accounts so far trying this over and over. Here are the account names

lj-123413413134

lj8383203030

lll38348373

I've imported the .json files and the .bin files so many times but when I go to lookup balance, it says no unclaimed balances found

lj8383203030 doesn't exist on the blockchain (maybe failed to register).

So far you're safe (at least you didn't import your balances to someone else's account).

haha well thats good, just not good that I can't see or claim any of the balances. When I go to import the original keys.json file, it says, 3 key imported, It looks good, then I go to check the balance but nothing. From what I am reading is there some kind of glitch in the windows version? I think I may have to go ride to my parents house tonight and try all this from their computer...they have a Mac.

Honestly not sure how I got to it, At one point i'm positive it showed my balance as that much, then over the weekend trying this again, I seen at one point my balance was at 3397.03....from what I am seeing I think there is 3 keys to my wallet? Maybe each key has a certain amount?

I guess you created a "cloud wallet" account, in this case the backup file has nothing. You need to login with the account name and the password for the name, but not restore a backup, then should be able to go. If you already in local wallet mode, in settings page there is an option to switch from local wallet mode to cloud wallet mode.
