Oh yhea ..
http://www.reddit.com/r/BitShares/comments/2dfcv7/bitsharesx_to_pass_peercoin_in_marketcap/

I am starting to see wisdom in the infomercial strategy. Apple invented the first personal computer and had to rely on infomercials. The people who were supposed to buy the computer didn't know what a computer was yet and it's the same situation with us.

Most people don't know what Bitcoin is or why they need it.

Luckybit,

In what era did apple use infomercials that contributed to their success.  I certainly don't recall Steve jobs ever relying on infomercials.

I'm also skeptical that targeting the older generation who normally buy vaccumm cleaners and p90x videos would be a good tactic.  Those who are comfortable with te internet don't watch info commercials.  They stream all their desired contents

See for yourself https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X7rLpYeahN4

Just Google Apple Informercial and you'll find all of them. Performa in the 1990w https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U4aK45Si2Dg  another informercial by Aspect from the 2000s https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=RiW707EpzCc

How did these infomercials contribute to their "success"?  These are infomercials for Lisa and performa, you can't say that apple "relied on" as Lisa was only a one time deal that never took off and the performa infocommercial is a campy video that in recent times has become comedic material for the internet.

I do see your point in marketing on financial channels.  However I have hesitations in infocommercial generally because they have the feel of a salesmen trying to sell you something you don't want.  I want bitshares products to be associated with the best campaigns.  Rarely do you find an infocommercial for the top of the line products because they use more savvier market channels to reach their audiences.

Very well said! I myself am very skeptical of doing infomercials as a way of spreading the word out about Bitshares and quite frankly I think it would be ineffective and wasteful.

Would this infomercial be shown outside of prime time on tv? Who even watches tv anymore? Cavemen?

Perhaps, a better route would be a mini documentary as someone already suggested, and upload it to youtube. YouTube is technically the second largest search engine in the world after Google. Same company I know I'm just saying that it's best to upload to youtube and not something like vimeo.

YouTube does a very good job at recommending videos on the right hand side that you may be interested in. This helps in exposing your content to a wider audience and you don't have to pay show your content.

I've gotten nearly a million views on my personal youtube channel and I didn't spend a single dime to get that exposure.

Not only that but people need to see how Bitshares works, how to use it. It's just like explaining the personal computer in the 1980s.
awesome comparison ..

i can see schools teaching the blockchain technologie to pupils some day .. about pow in history :)

Perhaps we should avoid the negative connotations of a "Scam Wow" infomercial and just call it a "Tutorial Video" for folks who visit this forum and ask for a way to get spun up in a half-hour while eating popcorn in their back-yard hammock.

Nevertheless, it would take the full scope of a half-hour or even an hour long infomercial to cover everything someone might need to know to fully spin up on the BitShares ecosystem.

Not only that but people need to see how Bitshares works, how to use it. It's just like explaining the personal computer in the 1980s.

Millions of people aren't going to have a clue how this works even if they have some experience with trading. Millions will not have any experience with trading and aren't going to know what going long or going short is, what a polymorphic digital asset is, what a delegate is, what a DAC is, and it all has to be explained.

We are a little under $700k from overtaking them. There are only so many people in crypto though so I suspect a lot of it is the same people balancing their portfolios. The question is are they informed decisions or just trying to follow market trends.

We could be taking the no.5 spot soon.

DRK looks to be crashing, fell below 0.008 support level on their main exchange MintPal.
Very little support on any of the exchanges below 0.008.

I'd rather we we're going up obv. but if we get into the top 5 it will be very good.

Why not fund someone like bill still to do a mini-documentary?  He already understands the basics of crypto, but has no clue about puttinf this tech behind a decentralized exchange

+5% for the Tutorial video .. Here in germany the term infomerical is almost unkown ..

Educational or Tutorial video sounds much more high brow than Infomercial. Also, it is very useful. If it wasn't for the early YouTube videos back in mid 2013 I never would have understood what was going on enough to get involved.

I wouldn't look at this as marketing so much as an Education department. Every major product offers courses/tutorials for new and expert users alike.

What's going on with Anoncoin .... Market cap 3 ?

It's a display bug. If you click into the coin you can see that it should be 0.0007 vs 0.07. Fixed now but it did catch me by surprise too :)

k :) was a bit surprised also

NXT is also strange. Is it a pump and dump now? Seems to have 20% swings almost daily. I can't imagine there's that much good/bad news to cause such volatility.

The reason to go after the older people is they are the people who have the money. Younger generations working rich in Silicon Valley are very limited. Older generations looking for places to invest are the people who have the money to actually make use of Bitshares X and drive up the market cap.

Those who are comfortable with the Internet? Not everyone with money is an Internet junkie. That doesn't mean they wont use Bitshares if it can help them retire. There are plenty of financial products marketed by informercials and it really depends on which channel it's on more than anything else.

If the informercial is on the financial channels then I think it's a great way to reach high net worth investors. Just because you get all your information from the Internet it doesn't mean every investor does. A lot of people actually watch CNBC. Cash4Gold commercials probably did have an impact.
