General Discussion / Re: Teaser Video introducing Bitshares X concept
« on: September 22, 2014, 03:49:36 am »
Hi community,

I've been playing around a little with some video editing and I've managed to come up with a teaser video introducing Bitshares X

Here is version 1.0 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DRhwgmNsm9o

Stimulative questions:
- What is the video missing that should be included?
- What content should we add, replace, or edit?
-  How do you think it will appeal to the existing bitcoin/digital currency audiences?

I am fully open to all suggestions, ideas, and potential collaboration with others.

+5%  awesome video.   A few points IMHO:

1) Find a new world for "Trustless" (maybe "Secure"?)
...... "Trustless Future"  ....."Trustless Market"   <--- this can easily leave the opposit impression in the mind.... Trustless Future = Future I can not Trust    "Trustless Market" =  a market I can not trust.

2) "Near 0% fees"  don't tell me much....  What to you think is near 0% vs what I think is near 0% would be much different.  My first reaction would be to use "Low" instead of "near 0%", but that doesn't sound very special and sound like every other ad out there, so need to think about that.

(its late, and I'm half asleep already, but I'll take a rough stab at it. I'm sure my comments can be improved... take what you like, leave the rest. )

My comments:

1) change the first line "first they invented, The Computer, then Internet, now BitsharesX, a digital exchange for currency, stocks and all other assets"...... to think of another two items, but definately take the "toilet paper" out.

2) section #4: "What is Bitshares X and why should you care about it?"    should move to right after section #2......."the three greatest inventions of modern times"

3) section #3  "Buy bitUSD and gain ingest, without a bank"     /  replace with something like: "the BitShares eXchange allows you to hold in your account digital representation of USD which pays significant interest on the balance and is readily convertible to actual USD at any time".   .....<--- it hard to say this in a short snip because you really need to explain bitUSD, the concept of the Exchange ect....)

The Bitshares system allows you direct control of your assets (money, stocks, and other personal assets)  without a third party intermediary.   As with all things digital, the Bitshares Bank & Exchange is far more efficient than any legacy bank or stock market. -  The lack of huge administrative overhead, and  third party shareholders means the account holders are the ones who gain and benefit from all profits generated by the business.

4) Get the incredable flexibility and utility of Bitcoin but with the price stability of the USD Dollar.

5) Your account and your transactions are 100% private.

In marketing Bitshares, I would try to avoid the terms Crypto, Blockchain, Trustless, Altcoin, ....(im sure there are others).   IMO, all these are ether too technical or leave a bad or wrong connotation.   I think the terms that bitcoin has been using to describe itself of the past 5 years have been very poor for achieving the objective is mass consumption /adoption. I think it has failed to achieve the mass adoption because to it.... (not mass adoption of companies, but mass adoption of the people which is the key).   We need to rework the crypto marketing vocabulary for successful penetration of 2nd generation crypto products like Bitshares

Something to keep in mind that Peter Thiel always talks about:

"It's better to be last and right; than first and wrong."

Apple is a prime example of this. Like them or not their is no arguing with their success.

If you are talking about iPhone, I think Apple at this point is relying more on their first mover advantage than anything else.  Their execution, though not bad, as failed to really impress for years now.  However their first mover status firmly established back in 2007 is still reaping them rewards today.   Something to consider.

I can assure you all, it's moving forward.  We need to time this correctly with all the work the dev team is doing to fix bugs, iron out bitUSD, and update the GUI (a huge project in itself). Bytemaster asked us to pump the brakes a bit on it as this is going on...  The marketing side is also quite complex on the back end, but is nearing completion.  Please be patient, there's absolutely no reason me or any of us would want to delay it a day longer than necessary....  :)  B

Awesome Brian.  Thanks for the update!

Considering the relatively small audience of the crypto world versus the majority of the market players that will be interested in BitSharesX and the other DACs that use the bitshares_toolkit I think the novelty clock hasn't started ticking yet. Sure, that new car smell has worn off for those that frequent bitcointalk but that's OK.

I think that our first-rung goal should be the "bitcoin" trend setters (i.e. the independent thinkers...  Then, we skip over the bitcoin-religious (i.e. close-minded) and go directly to the broader market.  The bitcoin faithful will come around at their own time once sandwiched by these two waves of adoption. No sense in trying to convince an audience who has already made up their mind without even any facts.  So, in my thinking the novelty benefit will certainly help in directing the crypto market's attention to achieve out first-rung goal

We have time friends.  As long as we are the innovators we may loose the initial marketing blitz hype from being new but that means if we did not keep innovating or releasing great features we would essential be a pump and dump.

We have time....maybe a month before innovators catch up to us maybe longer.

I agree, they must, keep innovating i am absolutely sure BM and his team will.    It i clear to anyone who chooses to open his eyes that Bitshares is no P&D!   However similar to the programing considerations the must be evaluated as to what must be done before launch and what can wait, a similar evaluation should be undertaken for marketing.  Of course if we decide to forfeit the novelty wave (a big forfeit) then this point is moot.

With regard to marketing there is no need to hurry as there is no real competition to race against.

The Bitshares branding trumps all else - Nxt/Nubits/Counterparty etc. can't really compete as they have to overcome the 'what the heck is Nxt?' barrier.

Bitcoin -> Bitshares is such a huge advantage that the devs can well afford the time needed to get the platform in top shape.

I would go further and propose it is actually advantageous to lie low for a while.

The devs have received enormously valuable feedback on the market mechanics and platform.

They are incredibly nimble in adapting and capitalizing on new opportunities.

The better way to look at this situation is that every day the devs advance the platform they also realize more value for BTSX shareholders.

I understand and like your thinking from the "A" side of the coin.  Let me provide some counter perspective (just to keep in mind):    All of these projects are essentially open source.  Anyone can take the software at any point and create there own product.  Additionally, there are many business cases where the BEST product does not necessarily "win"......(any one remember Betamax vs VHS?...probably to long ago for most :-), but there are other examples)  Thus, a big part of this competition is one of who can create the best network effect......fastest, biggest, deepest.    With open-source, marketing and consumer recognition weights quite heavily.

The wall Street Journal also posted the story yesterday.

http://blogs.wsj.com/moneybeat/2014/09/17/bitbeat-boston-fed-sees-bitcoin-flaws-but-cryptocurrency-potential/

Paragraphs 5,6,7 are most interesting regarding their negative opinion on mining and the conclusion that in there opinion Bitcoin "will probably not survive in the long run" due to this issue. (is that why bitcoin is going down??)

what do you mean by "marketing push"

I understand that there was to be a big marketing effort surrounding the release of BitsharesX.  As I understand it, this effort is being held back pending stabilization of the software.  However I don't think we can hold off forever without losing the momentum gain from the initial release.  This will be unfortunate, it is one time only, that one is able to capitalize on the novelty and attention that a new product release receives.

I havent heard of that marketing move, but i do agree that there is such thing as a momentum that you have to catch, though on the other hand you cant let people use a software that isnt perfect and expect them to buy in masses

I agree with you.  It's a delicate balance which we have to keep in mind.  But the point is that the momentum won't wait......if you lose this wave it's gone.  And this one is a BIG wave created by the attention received due to the recent product release.

when does the big marketing push start?    I think we are staring to loose the "buzz" window created by the BitshareX drop.   The marketing push should try to exploit that  spotlight as much as possible, but I think we will loose that window if the Mkting push does not happen within the next two weeks.

Interesting note.  The Boston Federal Reserve, in an article today on Coindesk agreed with BitShares stating that Bitcoin Mining is flawed

General Discussion / Re: BitShares X needs an awesome hook...
« on: September 17, 2014, 11:40:10 pm »
A variation of first version: "Join The Greatest Financial Experiment Since Bitcoin"

I'm not digging the use of 'experiment'. Bitshares is way past experimenting. Shit is getting real.

'Join - Greatest - Financial - Bitcoin' all good.

Will ruminate, but I think an effective hook will play on cronyism/corruption/centralization rather than 'join the revolution'.

When it comes to money/finance, folks are too conservative for revolting and candidly, too uneducated regarding modern finance to really grasp what is wrong with the status quo.

They want a soft sell that allows them to transition to new, easier services with a large group of shiny, happy friends while feeling vaguely superior/smarter than the average Joe.

Long term, average users of the Bitshares platform are going understand DPOS as much the average internet user understands HTTP.

Some friendly, non-threatening hooks that are in line with popular sentiment on the status quo:

"CEO not required."

"Dear CEO... it's not you, it's me."

"I trust Bitshares because I don't have to trust Bitshares."

Etc.

 +5%  Good thinking.

"The Greatest Financial Experiment Since Bitcoin"

That is pretty good.

+5%     This is pretty good but need to nix the work "Experiment"....sounds too shaky.    Maybe replace with "Development" or something other.

OldMan's suggestion from a different thread stuck with me:

"Faster than a credit card and safer than a bank."

+5%   Add a comment about flexibility and it may be a contestant IMHO.
