General Discussion / Re: Emerging Narratives
« on: March 22, 2014, 01:48:52 am »
<snip/>
In my opinion it is not clever to rethorically attack gvernments like this. Just provide the technology that will make it .. happen and be diplomatic and friendly otherwise :)

<snip/>
It is just not neccesary to make yourself enemies with authorities. It is against your cause.

Why do people still do it? Because fighting mode in which a specific enemy is identified and in which roles are clear (I am/we are good, the other side is bad) is calming for humans.

I agree and think that's an important point. I'm surprised to see some form of Newsletter evolving above! The formal position should be neutral. Talking politics is likely to alienate people and will bring a backlash that suggests personal egos and opinions are clouding the dialogue. Any talk of Government being force or nefarious, is partial and open to misinterpretation.

Demonising others, like Government, is a mistake - and shouldn't be necessary. What exists currently, is more a statement about where we are. Ignoring some of the inevitability of history to suggest that there's somehow a conspiracy against what it obviously better, just makes the challenger look weak, where the reality is more that we're just moving forward and beyond what has been possible previously.

The old addage of 'no politics; no sport; and no sex', tends to apply. Such talk tends to put those who don't exactly agree on the defensive and drives a people apart rather than drawing them together.

Focus on providing the tool and not what it is to be used for - leave that to people's imagination.

I think many of us would agree with a lot of the political rhetoric but speaking as someone who lives in the shadow of our Big Governemnt in the DC metro area and having first-hand experience with how they treat people whom they regard as "heretics", I agree with this completely!

No point in directly picking a fight with them.  Be prepared for "battle" but don't start the war!

p.s.  Also, we know they like to use agent provocateurs to flesh out people whom they consider to be extremists. Been there so...word to the wise!! ;)

General Discussion / Re: BitShares X Status Update
« on: March 20, 2014, 12:05:19 am »
So I now have unit tests mining everything, charging fees, and validating.   I need to check in with our developers that are implementing the P2P code to make sure that is on track.

Items left to do prior to making XTS liquid:

1) Integrate P2P code
2) Update RPC interface to match bitcoin's as closely as possible while abstracting it so that BitShares DNS / ME / Lotto can simply add a few new methods.
3) Update CLI interface to be extensible so that BitShares DNS / ME / Lotto can use it as well and just add a few new commands
4) Implement a large-scale simulation with 1000 wallets, with random initial balances, each making random transactions to other wallets with simulated mining
      - goals: evaluate CPU usage
      - validate that the blockchain can run for over a year without 'stalling' for lack of available coindays
      - validate that unspent coins are charged proper fee (5%) after 1 year.
5) Integrate P2P code with large-scale simulation and real mining.
      - validate network latency doesn't impact simulated behavior
      - catch network bugs
      - verify performance

Much work to do.. but steady progress is being made.

So what's the next, XT or Me?

If you read recent posts, it sounds like Me may come first, since it provides a way to test one or two of the dimensions that will be offered in the more complex XT. But let's just let them do their job and not ask for daily updates. They need to focus their time and efforts creating this. The lower maintenance we are in the next few weeks, the more progress we will see from the developers.

As a developer for, well, longer than I want to admit, I concur that interruptions are the killer of progress. It's amazing that these guys update everyone as often as I see in the short time I've been lurking here.

Keyhotee / Re: Alpha Keyhotee Bug Reporting in this thread.

(Warning: NewBie comments ahead!)...

Quickly played around with latest Keyhotee client.  Some comments:

It's not clear to me the relationships between the profile and associated "brain wallet" pass phrase vs contacts and their keys and "Identities" and their keys.  Really need to explain how this all is related.

It wasn't clear to me if I had to go to brainwallet site and get this info and/or whether I needed to use that for creating an identity or whether that was something else like my personal public key ....

Maybe cause I'm so new and haven't had time to follow everything but even in that case, maybe it's good feedback from a mostly uninformed user!

Also, contact list didn't seem to update immediately at times.  I took bytemaster's public key and tried to send him a message but since I'm not registered with a founder ID, not sure if it worked.  It did show up in my sent folder so that's good.

Concept is great.

I look forward to understanding profiles and brainwallet, identities, contacts and their respective keys.

As you can see I am a Newbie!!  ;D

I gather from the previous comments that one can't download to help test Keyhotee at this point due to lack of a Keyhotee ID?
You don't need a Keyhotee ID to help test it, you can create an identity with just a public key (not tied to a KH ID) and use the public key as your mailing address for now. That's actually how everyone tests it right now.

Okay, thanks!

Yeah, that's what I figured.  I get that a lot for Coin related software (especially mining software).

Apologies if this has already been reported.  I took a quick look but was too lazy to check it all!!

Got Norton Virus Warning when I downloaded it and it removed it as a "Suspicious.Cloud.7.EP" virus.
