General Discussion / How a local-bitusd system should work
« on: October 27, 2014, 09:16:02 pm »
Been doing more thinking about escrow:

Running a localbitusd.com type website would be a central point of failure and a target for regulators. We would be better served by multiple trusted users who can facilitate escrow as opposed to a single centralized website.

Fortunately all the components needed to do this properly will soon (I think) be in the toolkit.

Bytemaster has confirmed that there will be an escrow transaction type requiring 2 of 3 keys to send funds. Stan has also mentioned that there will be secure messaging builtin as well.

So I think we should leverage these two components to allow users to list BitUSD buy/sell adverts directly inside the client. These adverts could be created by Bitmessage-style broadcast messages, as they dont need to be stored forever on the blockchain, and because a new user does not yet have any funds.

Trusted members of the community can broadcast that they are willing to facilitate escrow, and BitUSD sellers can include their preferred escrow party in their sell advert. A new BitShares user then loads up the client for the first time and sees a safe and easy way to get his first BitUSD quickly.

This ties in nicely with the builtin reputation system that was talked about a while back.

What do you think? Is this the best way to do it?

Great post Rune, this is BitGold:

At first I expected that delegates would be kinda like miners or mining pools; anonymous individuals who act purely out of greed in competing to extract as much money as possible out of a fixed pie taken each block out of the stakeholders wealth. But once you begin to embrace the company analogy that bitshares really is, you will realize that delegates have very little in common with miners. What they have the most in common with are ordinary employees.

It reminds us why the first ever decentralized company is destined to grow :)

Im of the opinion that a deep depression in Bitcoin is necessary to force people to think about the deep flaws that Bitcoin has. If Bitcoin does bubble again, people will continue to delude themselves that mining is not destroying value.

- All one-to-four character entries in the global namespace come into existence as market-based assets when a majority of delegates publish an asset descriptor indicating their support.

Ive been thinking about this exact same idea for a while - because it solves the problem you mentioned of having to create a hard list of stocks etc. This is awesome - so as soon as there is sufficient interest in trading BitGOOG then we can just do it because it already exists.  +5%

Pretty good video on the subject:

US cops are psychos. I was stopped for speeding here in the UK a few months ago and they certainly didnt ask me how much money I was carrying. They were very polite and made me feel like they were doing me a favour - I probably was putting myself at risk.

bitUSD, bitCNY, et. al, are the currencies.  They are the stable units of account pegged to other currencies.

This is a good point - anyone who thinks that issuing new shares is going to reduce the value of their holdings is free to convert them 100% into BitUSD. But no one is going to do that because Im sure we are all fairly convinced that you will only get hired by the DAC if you add more value than you consume.

I keep thinking to myself that I should just code up a localbitcoins site that acts as the escrow 3rd party. I could do it in about a month in my spare time. But then I question whether this is needed given that i3 has secret plans for a fiat on-ramp anyway.

That sounds very useful!

Yeah having to go via BTC to get BTS sucks.

I think that for Bytemaster or any other of the devs to have to sell their stake would be the last thing any of us want. If we have to issue new shares to pay for devs then Im happy with that. Hopefully AGS wont run out too soon right?

Bytemaster I know you get a lot of flack from people on the forums. I personally feel like Im one of the slackers here who gets to keep my stake without doing much. I am often wondering how I could contribute more to the ecosystem, so I think you could ask the community for help more often if you ever have any subtasks that need doing.

For example I keep talking about the escrow transactions for fiat -> BitUSD. Thats because I keep thinking to myself that I should just code up a localbitcoins site that acts as the escrow 3rd party. I could do it in about a month in my spare time. But then I question whether this is needed given that i3 has secret plans for a fiat on-ramp anyway.

further supportive indications: BTS will be just a software update to BTSX .. nothing more!
all bitAsset balances will be preseverd .. all open orders will be preserved .. no changes will be made to the market engine (unless bugfixes)

Bytemaster has confirmed that already.

Thanks Stan. I should probably be buying more.

Never sell BTS, just trade on the internal exchange.

  • Partners want the deal to be keep secret until it is finalized
  • This is something that could be copied by competitors

I dont want to sound negative but if there is a good reason for not being more open on this, I wish  someone from i3 would at least confirm what it is.

We have had hints about on-ramps from fiat to BitUSD for a while, is there actually a service actively in development? We are pretty much in the dark on this.

Or are we waiting to see what the escrow transaction type is going to look like first?

A year from now we could have more users that Bitcoin.

This sounds very over-optimistic.

Did anyone really think they would try to regulate software development? They tried to do that in the 90s against the author of PGP, and the case went nowhere. Software source code is free speech: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bernstein_v._United_States
