General Discussion / Re: Can PTS be made PoS as per PND or BlackCoin
« on: October 15, 2014, 02:34:50 pm »
btw, I'm sure you've also found that the simplemachines forum search doesn't seem to have the 'mind-reading' capabilities of google, and with experience from BT, i also shy away from it, remembering the "too many searches/minute error" i used to get there all the time.

I recommend brushing up on your Google-Fu skills. Add "site:bitsharestalk.org" to your Google search query to restrict the results to this forum. I find this much more useful than the SimpleMachines search functionality.

Example: https://www.google.com/search?q=site%3Abitsharestalk.org+PTS+DPOS

Dang, I know about that... but never crossed my mind to use it on BT or this Forum... THANKS ARHAG! :) :D

General Discussion / Re: Checklist for PTS to DPOS: You can help!
« on: October 15, 2014, 02:33:13 pm »
I would like to add my "newbie" two cents to this discussion.

I found this thread after starting another here yesterday: https://bitsharestalk.org/index.php?topic=10036.msg130794
[and, no, it was not 'advertisement']

I agree with the commentators above who say that PTS (in it's current form) a reach out to the "other 99%" of the cryptoworld who are still mining-centric.  I know I was confused and also INTRIGUED by this "PTS" thing! :)

Also, it makes sense that PTS will rise in value along with the rest of the Bitshare ecosystem as the idea takes hold.  I came around fast because a small group of enthusiast have been trying to work out a "Proof of Others Stake" (PoOS) which is basically DPoS with a few differences... anyhow that is a different story, and I am very very happy with DPOS at the moment.

My suggestion would be to keep PTS/AGS separate from the BTSX simply because of MARKETING... marketing is a very very important and powerful part of this crypto-world. see: Ethereum ;)

I suggested a relatively simple switch to a PoS algo similar to PND because I was a "big investor" in PND back in February... and saw how smoothly it changed to PoS while retaining most of the "structure" of regular crypto currencies with their many addresses in a wallet, the familiar QT-style interface... etc.

BTSX is still confusing to new-comers, and having PTS/AGS act as "bridge" to get people into DPOS is a wise marketing choice in my view.

As far as the other commenters [do you remember being NEW to Bitshares?  I am just asking questions as they come and really appreciate those who answer them  +5%]
If I may give you and advice: I'd start using the search function first .. in the forums and the wiki ... because basically every information is publicly available .. and people like me and others have limited time resources  :-\
But if you cannot find any just keep asking

Thanks for your help Xeroc.  I have searched around quite a bit, and was getting overwhelmed after many hours.  Asking these questions and getting really direct replies HELPS ME A LOT!  -- i'm sure other newcommers feel similarly.

ps: I am already helping others better understand Bitshares, so doing my best to 'pay it forward'  :)

If you were interested in upcoming bitshares DACS that honor the PTS/AGS
snapshot social consensus .. than you should buy pts

if i did buy some PTS/AGS how do I get "my share" of future DACS

is there a publicly (transparent) blockchain-explorer type site where these 10% allocations are viewable?

I see the point of new dacs "giving" to PTS/AGS holders, but how do they "give" is there a nice site to browse previous allocations like that?

I found this awesome site:http://www.bitsharesblocks.com/

I was thinking of something like this, with PTS/AGS allocation history added... anyhow, I thought I would post this, incase someone else stumbles here

Very nice way of quoting yourself, happybit! I should learn this style myself.

I just added the answer to my own question... isn't this a good way of doing it?

General Discussion / Re: Cost basis in BTC or USD
« on: October 15, 2014, 10:56:26 am »
If I thought bitcoin was going down the best place I could keep my money is USD. Alts generally follow bitcoin so it wouldn't make much sense to put ones money in them if bitcoin's price is going down. Bitshares is my first "altcoin" so I'm not to familiar with how altcoins are traded but I don't think it would make sense to buy bitcoin if you thought the altcoin's price was going down because as I said before alts generally follow bitcoin. That's why I think calculating cost basis for altcoins in btc doesn't make sense. Just my 2 cents.

oh, you were thinking of 'cost basis' as in what to buy when you think Bitcoin is going down... then I think you are right, bitUSD or USD is the thing to use in speculating.  I was just explaining how I measured "profit" ... in my head

'Do not let the facts that stay on the way of a good story!' - is a guiding principle of his.
I had a rather long discussion about this particular 10 times (vs. 60 times) discussion with Brian .. was funny and ended with this picture:

 :D

Hahahaha... nice.. do you have a link to that discussion?

from the OP above, I was wondering how you can see how much has been "unclaimed"... where can you garner such data about BTSX DAC ..and others?

Code: [Select]
delegate (locked) >>> blockchain_unclaimed_genesis
711,574,579.54392 BTSX

Thanks...   where is info about how to do command line stuff.. and perhaps all the available codes?

There's a discussion about moving PTS to DPOS here: https://bitsharestalk.org/index.php?topic=9548.0

Thanks again for the link, Rob!  I didn't actually read through before my previous reply and thanks, and only just "got it" why some here may be seeing "bad intentions" where there is none.

I am new to Bitshares, and the DAC concept and don't, yet, see it behind every tree and bush in the forest!  :)

I just read your link and realized people are discussing this with the obvious idea that PTS would be a Bitshares DAC type of Proof of Stake "coin" instead of the type I was thinking.

Anyhow, I have been in the Bitcoin world for about 3 years now, and forgive me, if I still have "the old world" ruling my mind! :)

Technically, it would make sense to me still that forking a 'bitcoin' PTS proof of work algo to a 'pnd' style proof of stake would be easier, though obviously in this community there is plenty technical man-power to do the extra planning, and re-engineering for the task.

Thanks again for the link.

Cass also wants this to get adapted for Bitshares, as the code is all open source, and he asked me a few weeks ago if I were interested in doing so. I had a look and it might be doable, but especially on the backend there's a lot of work to be done. I'm thinking of trying to work on that in November as I'll have some more free evenings.

It alleady would help a lot if there was an overview of the markets in the wallet, showing the volume and being able to sort by volume

While I agree it should be in the wallet and markets should be presented in a better way, for now you can find volume info and sort here:

http://www.bitsharesblocks.com/assets

now this is very usefull. thanks for the link (perhaps links like this could be included in the wallet?)

« on: October 15, 2014, 05:01:50 am »
Yea when I first join bitshares I was frustrated with the lack of usd/btsx charts. Now that bitUSD has launch I can use that (just need a little more volume)

I agree that it is a bad idea to calculate a cost basis for alts in btc. Unless you are trading back and forth from alts to btc and not using USD at all.

I have been using it, and to me it makes sense to use BTC.... okay, it 'made' sense.  Now I will be rethinking things.  I still think BTC has a few more rallies to live through, though.  If you look at BTC as a DAC, and you see it for what it was seen before the likes of Bitshares and other encumbents, it made sense to compare everything to it, as it has/had the best growth potential.

I heard Peter Venesses talk about 1st order vs 2nd order Stochastic dominance, and the importance of recognizing BTC as such. (sorry, I don't fully understand it)

The point was, that when looking at one's return of investment from "mining" bitcoins, you can't use USD, because you have to consider what the same initial investment in simple purchase of BTC would have attained.  In the past, most would have done better just buying bitcoin, so it made sense to use BTC as "basis"

I am rethinking this myself at the moment, since Bitshares has so beautifully gotten rid of the need for mining... i hope

They add the addresses of people who donated to AGS/are holding PTS to the genesis block of the new DAC. Then you download the DAC, and you use your private key to prove it is you who donated/was holding PTS. Before the DAC comes out the developer usually posts a list of all the addresses and how much they're getting, so you can verify that the amount you're getting makes sense mathematically.

Thanks... I will have to do this a few times, and I will get it.  I was just wondering if there is a site to see this data now.

I'm trying to understand this, so I can better explain to others :)

If I was selecting my, at least 3rd, handle for this forum I would have chosen something more self-describing... like bitFamous_morethanabitBitter...  but it is just me,  all this is below you... but is it really? Such a big empire such a small man on top of it.  :)

I knew you were Famous!!! I was so happy, I had to call myself "Happy"!!!  :-*  ... meet Mrs Happy!

Do you have a point or something?
Or just California style - just change the subject to whatever?

Is anyone working on getting BitPay onboard to accepting bitUSD?

Right now I think bitpay is only focusing on bitcoin (and won't consider any alts).
But I don't think that really matters because they are working on on/off ramps that would make bitpay irrelevant.

Good point, Bitshares with bitUSD may never need the likes of Bitpay :)

I just read that LTC may be added to Coinbase or something, although I realize that is completely irrelevant in this group.  (sorry, still stuck in the 'old world)  :)

on the theme of my earlier "stupid question" about poor Dan being STOPPED PERMANENTLY   :'(

What would happen if the US Gov't "Shremed" the whole team in the USA?  (Shremed = Jailed, blocked, detained)

What percent of "all core/lead developers"  NOT residing in the USA?   :)

PS: I haven't found the site/video where Dan discusses this, could someone please share the link, thanks.  :)

ughhh... okay... so is there a real answer there somewhere?  I have no idea, is there like thousands of programmers working on this around the world that I just don't know about?

I guess the thread can be renamed: Stupid Questions... funny/weird answers thread!  :)
