General Discussion / Re: Draft Content for New Bitshares.org HomePage
« on: January 06, 2015, 01:13:53 pm »
Also is there still an ETA for secure messaging? I think that would be a great point to be able to add to the mix. That's a product that many people really want. It could bring them in to BitShares before a distributed exchange and bank service would.

General Discussion / Re: Draft Content for New Bitshares.org HomePage
« on: January 06, 2015, 01:03:34 pm »
I literally think that this list/or some version of it is all that should be on the homepage. Take a look at these top websites:

https://www.tumblr.com/
https://asana.com
https://twitter.com/
https://www.paypal.com/
https://www.netflix.com
https://www.linkedin.com
https://www.pinterest.com

Each one of the above examples has minimal information on their homepage and one very obvious call to action to download or sign up - all of this above the fold. We should do something similar. You see this pattern with many successful online brands that require account creation. Don't give visitors the option to get side tracked or bored.

We should use the left hand side of the page above the fold for the points. Perhaps  the points could appear carousel style as they probably won't all fit on for standard desktop view, or just jquery fade in and out from one set of points to the next. The right hand portion of the screen should be reserved for a very obvious call to action button. A big download/create account button and perhaps a short youtube video taking you through the steps required to set up an account once you've installed the wallet. Seeing the wallet in action will show people it's a real working piece of software. A real distributed bank and exchange. We could auto-detect the platform (OSX, Win, Linux) so there is just one big button and not many. That's it. Everything else can be setup on specific landing pages (e.g. merchant specific stuff, whitepapers etc etc).

Within the format I've suggested above we should then start doing some A/B testing for the copy/order of the points, perhaps the videos (A/B test some of Max's longer BitsharesTV interviews)  and A/B the text used on the Wallet button download (e.g. Download Wallet, Open Account, Get Wallet etc...) and compare conversion rates based on these A/B experiments.

Yesterday we got 854 visitors (up from our usual 400-500 visitors):

https://clicky.com/stats/?site_id=100787377&date=2015-01-05

In the last 24 hours bitsharesblocks.com is reporting that we have had 40 new accounts created. That is a conversion rate of 4.6% visits to actual accounts - this isn't too shabby, but I'd wager it would be higher if we had a homepage that led people by the hand a little more and put downloading and installing the wallet in order to create an account right there first and front and centre.

Long term I would suggest that some web based sign up would be even better for conversions instead of pushing a download of the full client. I'm assuming some of the tech from the lightweight clients could be leveraged to make this possible on the main site eventually?

I'd be happy to consider working with Cass and Adam to make all this happen if it needs someone to code and project manage it. If BM and the team feel they need my help here then just ask. I'm spending so much time on this forum I may as well put some of my skills to use.

Anyway here's my mashup of all the suggestions, including some of my own. A little longer, but with the right design and optimization of the important one's, via A/B testing, I think we'd start to see better conversions from visitors to actual BitShares accounts. This as Adam mentioned is a very important KPI.

I agree about removing the reference to Dan's BitStamp loss. It doesn't add to the discussion and makes Dan look like a victim of the very thing he is cautioning against.

I'm not sure that this is necessary. The current reality is that most of us operate with some crypto or fiat on centralised exchanges from time to time. It's disingenuous to pretend that we don't in the absence of off-ramps that allow for direct conversion of BitShares BitAssets to fiat.

Perhaps the point could be made that when on/off-ramps come online that support BitShares directly and when liquidity improves for BitAssets within BitShares  then this need for holding on exchanges will reduce/disappear. In fact  I think Dan implicitly does make this point when he talks about exchanges becoming or being replaced by gateways elsewhere in the article. Perhaps there's an argument for making that more explicit at the point where he talks about having funds held up on Bitstamp.

I've posted about the public traffic logs accessible on Clicky a few times before and nobody seemed to have noticed. Glad it's been spotted by a few more people this time!  :)

It's running on my Clicky account, I had some spare capacity there and Cass kindly added the code to the main site in light of a thread I started a few weeks before Xmas:

https://bitsharestalk.org/index.php?topic=11023.0 (How will we measure the effectiveness of marketing and PR by members of the community?)

Well done Max and Dan. This video is an excellent example of how get the interest of Bitcoin diehards.

A positive attitude towards Bitcoin that shows how it can live in harmony alongside  and within the BitShares ecosystem. Over time one would expect that Bitcoiners will see the advantages of moving some holdings in to raw BTS or other BitAssets.

It's a good day to retweet and mention this URL in comments in light of the problems BitStamp are having today. I've already posted a link to the video on a Hacker News thread discussing the BitStamp freeze.

Just posted this comment to hackernews in light of the trouble BitStamp appears to be having:

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=8838957

I can already see boost in traffic to the bithshares.org site. Just goes to show how a well placed and well timed comment can boost traffic/exposure to BitShares:

https://clicky.com/stats/?site_id=100787377

Live traffic as it comes in here:

https://clicky.com/stats/spy?site_id=100787377

Feel free to add your own comments bigging up BitShares to pull that part of the thread back up to the top of the HN comment stream :-)

On a side note I couldn't happen but notice that the homepage does not seem to make much mention of how BitShares is a distributed exchange and the advantages that this brings. Surly this should be front and centre on the homepage since it's one of our biggest unique selling points?

We're seeing some great traffic from this article today and from another coindesk article that mentioned us a day or two ago on bitshares.org. Top slot for traffic usually comes from coinmarketcap. Take a look at the public facing traffic stats for bitshares.org:

https://clicky.com/stats/?site_id=100787377

These two articles have roughly doubled the usual daily traffic to the main site. I'll take this a a positive sign that recent marketing efforts are starting to pay off.

General Discussion / Re: Default Vote for Core Devs???
« on: January 03, 2015, 08:26:14 pm »
I agree this is a PR disaster waiting to happen if done by default, especially if there is no change to the current wallet GUI.

If we can't generate enough interest in voting to combat voter apathy in the short term, then second best option is a dialog on first load of the wallet that makes it easy for users to vote in a slate of developers.

I'd argue that this mechanism should allow multiple slates to be loaded with delegates from the whole ecosystem - carousel style. I think it would be fair if the core dev team showed up as the default slate.

I understand BM's thinking on this,  and I think it's fair that all core dev's should get at least one 100% slot in the short term. I'm able to make that assessment based on the days I've spent in the forum over the last year - I'm an old timer with and understanding of who the core devs are and what they have done so far. New users and outsiders don't have the information I have and they will call 'scam' if core devs are voted in by default and transparently. Simple as that.

I think it's important that the 'dialog' being discussed, if required, is opt-in and not opt-out. With the correct wording explaining why the core team being voted in is so important I think the votes required would come in. Cass could likely do a great feel-good treatment for this so that people are encouraged to vote 'Yes'. A 'Select All' option as well as being able to vote individual delegates in or out on this dialog would be the way to go.

General Discussion / Re: Charles Hoskinson - Business Development Delegate

I watched his TED talk the other day:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=97ufCT6lQcY

I don't know much about the details that led to the earlier parting of ways with the team here, or with Ethereum for that matter, but he's a great communicator if the talk above is anything to go by.

I'd certainly pay close attention to a more detailed delegate proposal.

Stakeholder Proposals / Re: Quick question
« on: December 18, 2014, 12:20:20 am »
For the record what I had in mind for delegates would initially be a delegate directory/delgate campaigning platform. I think svk knows that and just misinterpreted what the OP was proposing, which to me sounds more like a utility that only delegates would run to alert them to the status of the network.

jabbajabba reached out to me and I pointed him to Wackou's great work on btstools.

While I'm here I'd like to mention that the delgate interview fuzzy did with Wackou was great. I was impressed with how Wackou came across. I encourage you to listen to the interview and vote for him if you are similarly impressed (and for fuzzy too when his delegate is up and running):

Anyone know anyone on this list who they can ask for an invite from or who is already a member:

https://bit.ink/u/

Would be good to post one of MethodX's Reddit links from today there whilst bit.ink is in the top 10 over at hacker news.

MethodX. Glad you liked my earlier ideas.  Are you considering changing the link from Github to the .org download page on your reddit posts?
