I saw this tweet from Bruce Schneier, which lead me to this article from the EFF.

Once you're used to the transaction speed in BitShares it's really scary to go back to using other cryptos!
I was moving a fairly large value in another system (naming no names) and it was stressful - I was waiting for transaction confirmation and it just felt like something had fucked up.

Adopting BitShares is a bit like moving from standard definition T.V. to high definition - "Oh, this is good!"
Then when you're accustomed to H.D., if you ever use S.D. again you think, "Oh my word! What is this shit!?"

Epicentre Bitcoin: EB65 – Adam Back & Greg Maxwell: Sidechains Unchained

Brian Fabian Crain says something like, "the idea of stable cryptocurrencies, it's very attractive but so far there are no implementations, although some people told me this nubits thing but I haven't looked into it"...

I know there are intricacies when it comes to the meaning of 'stable', but if nubits makes it onto people's radar, surely BitShares should!? It's so frustrating.

From 1h19m36s the subject went on to proof of stake. I'm not sure how DPOS fits in to what they were saying. Adam Back and Greg Maxwell seem to be of the opinion that there is no decently viable option around for proof of stake. Are they aware of DPOS I wonder?

They get some interesting people on the show/podcast. I was thinking of sending them some sort of message regarding BitShares.
Is there anyone here well placed to communicate with them? Or inclined to do so?

Their main sponsor seems to be ShapeShift, and they do a demo of ShapeShift during the episode. Maybe we could suggest they use BitUSD for something now that we're back on ShapeShift...

BitShares is really successful compared with other projects. Look at our placing by market cap since launch!
It's not as if we're sliding out of sight on coinmarketcap!

OK. It looks like someone involved with Ripple saw this post by bytemaster from Dec 2013...

BitShares PTS / Re: "No block source available" error message
« on: March 12, 2015, 05:36:49 pm »
Also - from what I remember the whole premise of PTS was that you could get other "drived" assets/chains from it.
I haven't "redeemed" any of my PTS since I bought them.

What other cryptocurrencies am I entitled to for my PTS, and how do I claim them?

The BitShares-client and the PTS-DPOS client allow importing your old wallet.dat. You'll automatically receive shares for the PTS in your old PTS addresses.

There are other DACs in the works (Play, Music), but they don't have a client yet. The Music sharedrop will be made on the BitShares blockchain, so importing your keys there will automatically give you NOTES when they're ready.

How about BitShares BTS? You may be able to get some depending on how old your PTS are!

There is this episode of Bitcoins and Gravy (on LTB network).

It's called Episode #55: BitTunes: Setting Music Free!

Simon Edhouse is the man behind BitTunes, and he's taking it very seriously.

I was going to go through the episode and pick out any bits which may be useful but I don't have time right now.

Does anyone know if Cob and co. know much about BitTunes' plans?

I like the way the 'agreement' box at the bottom changes into a check mark.

Not sure about the latin underneath it though..."Fermentum Dolor Magna Vestibulum Ornare"

General Discussion / Re: What's happening with the price?
« on: March 11, 2015, 09:27:17 pm »
Yes, mistakes were made.  Large mistakes.  BTS holders at the time paid the price dearly.  Those of us who didn't realize they were mistakes and held have suffered.

One cannot undo mistakes of the past, we can only make decisions now.
The relevant question is:

At the present time, with the features that BTS has now (Paid delegates, market assets, etc), is a price of 3200 satoshis per BTS too high, too low, or roughly correct?

Based on your available funds, and current exposure to BTS or lack thereof, is the correct move for your portfolio to increase your BTS holdings, decrease, or hold the same?

I took a big position in BTS again at the 0.000045 BTC level we seemed to stabilise at as I thought with all the positive developments and the mistakes priced in, we'd start to grow again.  That has obviously proved to be incorrect. So I've been exiting that trade at a loss.

For what BTS technically is and how rapidly it can develop I think it's severely underpriced. However in terms of community growth, BitAsset adoption and general sentiment we've been weak & because we've been in a fairly sustained downtrend I've actually even sold a bit of my base position too.  I'm also concerned about the amount of development BTS seems to need and if it can afford it for more than a few months if the price doesn't recover.

In conclusion I would say we're cheap but I've already taken some losses so even if I miss some of the initial gains, i'll probably wait for a clear change in the direction rather than trying to call the bottom before I accumulate again.

I'm not disagreeing with anything Empirical said here - it's reasonable. There is obviously risk involved with anything as groundbreaking as BitShares. One can argue that it makes sense to pull out to a degree and then come back in if there's a clear positive change. I would, however, like to describe an alternative way to view things.

I put quite a lot of money (for me) into BitShares, in large part because I want it to succeed for ideological reasons. If I only wanted to make money I may do what Empirical suggested. I didn't put more money in than I can afford to lose, so I would rather lose it all while supporting BitShares than sell to avoid personal loss. I see it as a once in a lifetime thing and I'm gonna stick to my metaphorical guns! If I decide I can reasonably afford more, I'll get more.

This isn't to criticise Empirical, I'm posting this to remind myself why I'm here. It's easy (and sometimes exciting) to get caught up in market caps, but for me there is more at stake.

...We hope you will be patient with our temporary lull in communications while we get our coherently decentralized PR act together...

...In the past we have happily enjoyed free-wheeling interactions with a broad audience at bitsharestalk.org...

...We are currently in discussions with representatives from many of these groups and hope to reach a consensus that will satisfy them all in the near future. We're glad to say that we're making progress in formulating a better approach than we have had in the past.  One that is  more fair to everyone...

It's nice to hear something about what's going on.

I hope at some point soon the void caused by the 'temporary lull in communications' will be filled with something of substance, for the sake of good PR!
This topic is a start!

I also hope that whatever's going on behind the scenes is constructive, and beneficial for BitShares...

I've seen this in the MaidSafe forum.

I started this topic in general discussion...

I saw this topic in the maidsafe forum. I think it's interesting enough to be a topic here in "General Discussion".

Essentially, it seems from David Irvine's comments that there's a possibility of their platform switching from C++ to Rust! Can you imagine what a kerfuffle it'd cause now if our very own bytemaster made similar comments on our forum?!

David Irvine is the main man at maidsafe, and he is 'dirvine' on the forum... have a read!

I've created this post, because I expect people here will see at least a couple of discussion points:
  • The fact that David Irvine has made such comments (it's relevant to where we were and where we're going)
  • Technical aspects - is Rust really THAT good? Is this something we should or could consider at any point?

I'm actually pretty interested in the second point, especially as I think the first has already been covered to an extent elsewhere.
Although I'm virtually clueless about programming languages (I've just started to learn Python), I'd like to hear from people in the know.

Also, feel free to tell me to learn something other than Python. :P
