General Discussion / block reward attack
« on: November 04, 2014, 09:48:41 am »
How do we stop a person or group acquiring or merging a large group of shares in order to vote for short term profit?

This worries me because 10% is a great return on an investment, market manipulators with large enough funds could easily pump and dump the market enough times to acquire 51% stake then vote the full 10% for their delegates. They could even reinvest 2 or 3% back into the system to keep the price/development up.

Paid delegates is a great way to add value to the system but is there any way to ensure that this kind of attack doesn't happen?

DevShares / new blockchain "DevShares"
« on: October 27, 2014, 03:12:40 pm »
This is a quote from BM's press release draft.

"A new blockchain "DevShares" will be used for testing the upgrade of BTS and future hard forks as well as experimental features and economic experiments.   This blockchain will be a 40/40/20 snapshot AGS/PTS/X taken on November 5th.    DevShares will not be considered a "safe store of value" but non-the-less will have value for those wishing to test their smart contracts or BTS integration on a low-value chain.   Details on DevShares will be provided over the coming month."

I am trying to decide on the relative value of this chain, and could do with some clarification.
Will it will include all fully developed and tested features of the BTS blockchain? If it does then while it wont be a safe store of value when using your DVS (devshares?) on works in progress it will be safe on tested features like bitusd?

Would there be anything in place to stop it competing with BTS other than increased risk?

If you are going to let it have real world monetary value then you must be saying it will be around permanently as the DVS wont get value if they are going to expire. Is my assumption correct?

If the above is correct then once BTS is fully developed (i know some new things will always be added but 95% developed) Then we will have two chains with no reason for them to have different value.

Seems to me that the biggest weakness of DPOS is voter turnout. Im sure we will get a little more with the current proposal and again some more with a bug free and trusted client but with all the strength of DPOS it would be nice to put a nail in this one weakness and get some really high turnout.

I notice people are really engaged in the forum and the poles seem to greatly reflect opinion. Hence my question. I can see lots of merits for putting this forum on the client. I haven't loaded the client for weeks yet i log onto the forum two or three times a day. I'm sure i am not the only one. So, we would get increased traffic and targeted traffic to the client. Traffic that would read the forum vote on poles (which could be incorporated into delegate voting to increase participation). Also If we the community were loading up the client as often at they log on to the forum then they would be more likely to engage in the features, thus creating more transaction fees.

The only downside i see is that it would be a barrier to entry for newbies, however, this too could be turned to a positive.  We keep an online forum to attract newbies but, firstly they wont see the kind of potentially panicking discussions we have from time to time  :). Also they will be incentivised to download the client and use it regularly if the want to engage further.

General Discussion / power corrupts absolute power corrupts absolutely
« on: October 23, 2014, 08:45:01 am »
vote rigging
propaganda
centralization
cronyism
greed
inflating away property rights
knowing whats best for other people

I'm talking about government of cause but there is reasons why government after government, civilization after civilization, company after company fell into the same traps. I put this out as a reminder to avoid the pulls of the dark side.

I think this part of the proposal is not being discussed enough.

The proposal is to allow BTS to be diluted by the issuing of more BTS. In the mumble session BM suggested that a cap could be hard coded.

As well as voting on what you think that hard cap should be can we also have a discussion about :-

1. what we would consider it acceptable to spend the raised capital on? Development? Marketing?
2. Who should have control of the raised funds?
3. how will the amount of dilution be decided upon on a call by call basis?
4. Who can make a call for more shares to be issued?
5. Will there be a maximum frequency of share calls hard coded?
6. If X% per year is decided upon as a maximum, will we also have a maximum individual share call hard coded? eg if 10% was decided as the hard coded limit for a year should we have a maximum share call within that year hard coded like 2%?

These are just a few questions to get the ball rolling, I just think that this part of the proposal is not getting the posts is deserves.

General Discussion / dilution - who decides - where do the coins go?
« on: October 20, 2014, 08:45:40 am »
Been plowing through the posts and listened to the mumble.

I can see why the mumble session was positive, putting some of the DAC's together makes absolute sense, from a pooling of resource and not competing with ones self point of view. However, the problem which made me feel uncomfortable was not addressed. These are:-

We carnt fairly vote on whether to issue more shares or not (dilution) when i3 controls enough shares to sway the vote.
Where are any newly issued shares kept, who controls them?

Edit - To be clear i am not talking about the conversion of AGS,PTS and BTSX to BTS that can be reasoned out with discussion. I am talking about any future dilution which Dan said could be voted on and then used for development.

General Discussion / lost track of DAC's
« on: September 30, 2014, 03:43:29 pm »
I saw toasts post today [DNS] ** LAST CHANCE TO CHECK ALLOCATION ** and I believe there has been some kind of lotto allocation with AGS PTS. Would it be possible to have a thread which only announced new snapshots, approximate release date (can be as approximate as you like) and small description of the DAC.

As more and more DAC's get released its going to get harder and harder to keep up. A thread in general discussion, where a lot of us skim to try to keep up to date, would be very helpful for those like me who don't have as much time as would be nice to study all that's here.

KeyID / have you had talks with Maidsafe?
« on: September 23, 2014, 10:58:34 am »
Sorry if this has been discussed already, i've only just started to follow this project.

Of what I have read so far i don't see an incentive to get a .p2p domain. A decentralized dns only solves part of the problem we need decentralised servers and browsers to make it interesting (and give real speculative value to .p2p). There have been 100's of new tld launches all of them with small value compared to .com or country domain extensions.

If you could link up with maidsafe on this the value of .p2p would be really interesting.

KeyID / confused - KeyID and DNS DAC

Im confused, could you explain the difference between KeyID, DNS and the .p2p domain name. If you own one do you own all three?

General Discussion / how do i vote?
« on: September 11, 2014, 01:31:51 pm »
Ive seen the little triangle reminding me i should vote, nice

So, I click on vote and then i am given four options.

Vote All
Vote None
Vote Random Subset
Vote as Delegates Recommended

What do they mean? How do i choose a particular delegate? When i select any of the options i seem to be being charged 0.5 btsx, do i pay to vote?

Seems to me that voting is imperative in DPOS, could there be a simple help page link for this?

General Discussion / why is bitUSD trading at a discount?
« on: August 29, 2014, 10:32:07 am »
I dont think the bitUSD is trading at a discount because of lack of confidence. My guess is that it reflects the volatility in btsx. The market is saying "I think btsx could go up by 33% before i could get my BTSX out of bitusd and back into pure BTSX"

Its because, one, the market is bullish on BTSX and ,two, traders/investors don't know how to or don't believe its possible to get BTSX in and out of bitUSD quickly enough to react to the BTSX market volatility.

I dont understand if the problem is down to the BitUSD market not being fluid enough or people not understanding how to use the platform. Either way bitusd will get closer and closer to parity as the market becomes more fluid and traders/investors become more educated.

I think it would be a usefull to make a video explaining how to increase your btsx holding by trading bitusd. This way, if i understand it correct, more people would put their btsx into bitusd when they see a price swing coming instead of returning to another coin.

Im guessing that most crypto holders aren't trained traders and don't understand how to go long or short or even what it means. I think we could increase the supply of bitUSD dramatically with a short video explaining if you think btsx are going up then do this, if you think they are coming down do this.

Im sure its all explained here, but, theres nothing like a cartoon to make everything clear  :)

General Discussion / BitsharesX client and vista
« on: August 26, 2014, 04:20:17 pm »
I have some PTS to redeem on a pc with windows vista and have had some issues.

1. when i tried to create a password it accepted that both passwords were the same but wouldnt move on. I then closed and restarted the client and it asked for my account as if it had worked the first time.

2. When i tried to copy the new key address right click on the mouse didn't bring up the copy box. I had to use ctrl A.

3. After a short amount of time the application crashes and asks me if i want to send an error report (which i did)
