General Discussion / Re: [Rough Idea] Introduce 5% delegate rotation
« on: March 18, 2015, 01:00:15 am »
allowed the number 1 delegate to not get paid that month

Round, not month. Every 17 or so minutes.
An elected delegate would only loose about 4 blocks a day - in exchange for a much better public perception for our blockchain.

General Discussion / [Rough Idea] Introduce 5% delegate rotation
« on: March 17, 2015, 09:32:02 pm »
I don't know if this is technically feasible, but here's the rough idea:

Every round, five random delegates are temporarily dropped and substituted with five random candidates from the top (say) 1000, for the duration of the round.
The next round they're of course reinstated, the temporary five are dropped back to standby and there's another draw.
This way the 101 "real" delegates are still signing 95% of blocks, while everyone in the next 900 has a chance to sign a block every couple of days.

This has several worthwhile effects:
1) allows standby delegates to prove themselves to potential voters
2) shuts up the anti-bts argument that we "only" have 100 validating nodes. Now we have a thousand! (for a price of 101)
3) allows more people to participate and invest themselves emotionally into the project
4) gives more weight to smaller stakes; incentivises voter participation
5) makes the theoretical 51 delegate attack slightly harder (attacker now needs to compromise 56 delegates)
6) makes a DOS attack an order of magnitude harder

Thoughts?

I'm not in U.S. so I don't give a crap about the topic, but this seems like an opinion that makes sense:

"Buffet stock"? Are they talking about starting an asset pegged to BRKA?

I believe that silkroad singlehandedly saved Bitcoin from obscurity in late 2011. When the price fell into single-digits I remember shutting down my miner and thinking "OK, this was a cool idea, too bad nobody cares". I imagine the general outlook was similar.

I believe at this point the silkroad demand alone formed the base of BTC value. A 'backing' of sorts.

When the price rebounded in early 2012 I thought: OK, as long as dark markets exist BTC will not fall to zero.

As long as it's the original ones. I got strangely attached to the ugly fellow.

Yup, works like a charm, just like most previous ones. I don't see what the big deal about stability is. Out of all the releases I've had maybe 3 that were crashing, the rest were rock solid to the point that I've been leaving the client running for days and forgetting about it.

Now, someone could say that not everyone has a "powerful" machine (i5 with 16GB RAM and an SSD) but the way I see it there will soon be separate light/mobile BitAssets wallets for our clients. The full Bitshares platform is a tool for shareholders and traders and how can anyone be an "investor" in anything when they can't afford a modern PC?

I think that they should be a work of art if we are going to post the link to reddit and tweet it to the world. Excellent marketing (even to our own community).

Has an audio hangout ever gone viral anywhere?
Yeah, you can make a short snippet out of something particularly enticing (though I don't know what that would have to be) but not the whole show.

This will seem weird but please, remove the github icon and only link it at the bottom on the "The BitShares source code is also available via the GitHub" as a text link.

Currently it's the first link they see and you're sending users to a confusing site they don't understand instead of the executable.

Editing is pointless. Hangouts are supposed to be informational not a work of art.

Make them three hours long and post immidiatelly.

In order to make the hangouts more inclusive move them to google hangouts or skype. You're not going to have random people come in on the air so forget about this mumble contraption.

Have guests scheduled in advance and have questions ready. Take additional questions from the chatroom. Prevent dead air and you wont have the need to edit and  'clean up'.
It'll require preperation and hard multitasking but you are the one to do it.

Putting the validity of the article aside, this is a fantasticaly well executed hatchet job. There must be some important shit going on behind the scenes to warrant this level of expensive black PR.

BTW,  this is what we should expect once Bitshares starts being noticed. Devs should expect to have their previous work and family relationships being dragged into the open in the coming crypto-banking wars.

I don't understand this fully, but it has the pretense of being exciting which is all we can ask for in crypto at this point...

I can do this, but eventually marketing delegates will be some of the people with the largest stake in the network and I have to recognize that angering too many delegates can kick me and my crew out of a delegate position.

This is a real problem in this community. Everyone wants to be a delegate so we end up sucking each others dicks instead of pushing ourselves to higher standards.
Every diluting delegate should be publishing weekly reports about what they did with their operating funds, how many work hours they put in and at what rate. This includes devs.

Great to see the "official" website up!

Please, move 'what are the risks' below the fold.

Does anyone have any opinion on the

with their Proof of Movement?

They're running a "presale" with a minimum $2500 buy-in
http://lazooz.org/pre-sale/
I was wondering if it's worth getting into.
